Globe: Pats close to extension with Kaczur

It is appears that yours is a wish list independent of cost and value. I suppose if cost was no object, your list would be fine. If I take your comment with regard to big fish at face value, then your 1-5 won't be addressed until next year because of the magnitude of their contracts or the fact that we don't yet know about their worth. Sure we'd like to sign Gost, but certainly he should wait to see what he is worth.

LET'S FOCUS ON 2009
1) KACZUR (he will solidfy the OT position for years with Light and Vollmer and perhaps LeVoir). LeVoir will be an RFA next year. I have no problem with extending him.
2) FAULK (his extension would free up cap room; besides we want him for a couple of more years)
3) NEAL (he is a valuable lineman; we may be able to extend him at a reasonable price locking in one of the OG's for next year.
4) WOODS (he is a valuable backup)
5) BANTA-CAIN (he is a valuable backup)
6) HOCHSTEIN (he is a valuable backup at center)

The bottom line is that the team would be better long-term with these players signed through 2011 instead of 2009.

I can only assume they are trying to tie up some of the small fish within the constraints of the available cap room before going after the big fish in the offseason.

My priority for resigning2009 FAs as of right now is something like the following:

1. Wilfork
2a. Seymour
2b. Mankins
4. Gostkowski
5a. Bodden (assuming he does well)
5b. Burgess (assuming he does well)
7. Guyton
8a. Kaczur
8b. LeVoir

Most of the others I am uncertain about at this juncture, including Faulk (age), Green, and Galloway (age). Many of the others are JAGs.

Reiss just reported on Twitter that Nick's extension has been finalized. Will be interested to see who's next.

Guess we know who one of the cuts WON'T be.

My guess is Neal.

Good. Cheap Canadian help. Gotta luv it.

I take back my previous requests to tighten up the Northern border.

Dude could look after your garden in the off-season too!

Kaczur was extended because he could be. If the deals there that works, can be done then why not do it? I think some of us are thinking this is treated like a priority re-up, it was done because it could be done and out the way now IMO. One down on the OL...

The Patriots had 26 players (9 starters) whose contracts were

up after 2009. Now, they have one less to worry about. I hope

they keep working at extending anyone willing to accept a reasonable

salary.

Re: Kazcur extended

Wow. I guess:

1. We finally have stability at RT.
2. Vollmer's best shot for a future starting job is, in BB's opinion, LT.
3. Kaczur didn't really need those painkillers to perform well after all.

Not so fast. If that's the deal straight up he's getting a $3.5M signing bonus and his 2009 and 2010 salary. Those 2011 and 2012 salaries mean nothing unless they are guaranteed, and I highly doubt that. He may never see $7.5M of that extension because if the cap comes back his dead cap would be $1.9M spread over 2011-2012.

Patriots | Kaczur signed to three-year extension
Mon, 24 Aug 2009 17:19:30 -0700

CBSSports.com reports the New England Patriots have signed OL Nick Kaczur to a three-year extension worth $13.7 million, according to a source familiar with the situation. Kaczur will receive a $3.5 million signing bonus with base salaries of $2.7 million (2010), $3.4 million (2011) and $4.1 million (2012). He will earn $2 million in 2009.

If this is correct it's really now a 4 year $16M deal. If Vince were willing to take twice that (4/$32M/$15M SB) or even a bit more he might have a deal too.

QB's who have achieved franchise status in their 20's and maintained it into their 30's can be reasonably expected to remain viable into their later 30's. Nose tackles not so much. They're generally headed down the back nine in their early 30's. Vince probably wants a 6 year extension for that reason (wonder how many NT's play 12 years in the league)... So he gets $25M+ in bonus and close to $30M guaranteed. A three year extension only takes him to the wrong side of 30 for half that. And NT's don't get big guaranteed or bonus deals thereafter.

So for him it comes down to do you take the shorter deal you're likely to see all of or hold out for the deal you likely get cut or asked to take one during. Risk this year for potential larger overall deal or grab security for your children and their children (but maybe not the third generation...).

1. Really now?

2. I agree.

3. Kaczur simply is using the supplements and vitamins that David Ortiz took. :)

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

He was scheduled to make $2.27 this year, so perhaps this extension will lower that number. That could possibly help with the Vince talks.

It will actually increase his 2009 cap number from $2,409,280 to $3,014,280.

I figured as much since the numbers weren't adding up the way the deal was hastily outlined. I think Kas saw the $2M he'd receive in 2009 as less than the $2.27M he was scheduled to receive and assumed that was his new cap number. Instead it's $2.27 plus his remaining $132K in amortization from the rookie deal plus one fourth of his $3.5M signing bonus. So the new Kaczur deal is essentially 4/$16M deal.

Hey Miguel, you say on your cap page you included Walter's deal, but I can't find any reference to it there or anywhere. Did you assume vet minimum or is anything showing on the NFLPA site, cause anytime I google for it the articles that come up say the deal was no details available...

FWIW did you see Borges' article claiming the $3.5M is an option bonus and his salary is lowered to $2M this season but increases by $750K if the option is not exercised??? That is an interesting approach if in fact that's what the deal is and it would lower his cap for the moment...

FWIW, I've seen several articles saying his new cap number is $2M. Clearly not correct.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

The open question is the nature of the bonus. If it is a signing bonus due now, then there is an increase in the 2009 cap by about $600K. If the bonus is a 2010 option (team or player) then the 2009 cap would be reduced. I cannot see Kaczur voluntarily taking less money this year unless the bonus is now or at HIS option before the 2010 season.

That's not exactly right. If it's a signing bonus due now and it doesn't lower his 2009 salary as part of the extension, then his cap goes up by one fourth of $3.5M ($875K). If the bonus is a 2010 team option the cap would remain as is. If it's a player option it's assumed exercised for cap purposes. I agree that I can't see Kaczur agreeing to taking less salary this season unless Borges is right and the option is protected by raising his 2009 salary by $750K in the event the option is not exercised. But I assume if that is the case the option has to be exercised before the end of December (league year) so either it or the salary increase reflects on the 2009 cap.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

Why wouldn't Kaczur accept a deal where his salary is decreased this year and HE has an option in the offseason to accept a $3.5M bonus?

How is that deal compliant with the 30% rule???
