Failed 1979 logo

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

That guy isn't what was painted on the field for the fan vote, though. Thread starter described what I remember; a profile of a (somewhat) Elvis looking character against a blue rectangle.

That picture has nothing to do with the new logo they proposed. I can't find or remember exactly what it looked like but it was a star with a red and blue background. They brought out huge banners of each logo for a fan vote by noise at halftime. The new banner got booed off the field.

You're right, they were banners. I had completely forgotten that.

I think the thread starter's visual was pretty accurate. I remember a profile of a minuteman against sort of a billowing flag-like background.

That would be fun to see again. I know I saw it on TV, which would have been NBC at that time. IIRC (and that's debatable) they showed a brief clip as they led off the second half.

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

I remember that game ... IIRC, the logo had a tri-color look (fall colors?) in it, and had a look reminiscent of the Steelers logo ... Had no chance of winning. Also, I thnk the vote was going to be tallied by volume, not boos/cheers. When they presented the new logo the place went deathly quiet ... Just 40k or so fans staring at the abomination.

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

Does anyone recall the logo which fans booed out in favor of the then-current Pat Patriot logo circa 1979? What did it look like? Does anyone have any images?

I recall it was a stylized, squarish waving American flag with the chisled profile of a Patriot's face on the (left?) edge, evoking the former Old Man of the Mountains face in New Hampshire. I believe there were no stars in the flag, just the blue field and a reduced number of red/white stripes.

Thanks

Yeah.... I remember being at the game they had the vote....
I cannot remember what the other banner looked like. You have a good
memory for remembering as much as you did about the other logo.

1979 Is the same year Darryl Stingley showed up at the labor day opener
against the Steelers on Monday night football. I believe we gave him a
15 to 20 minute standing ovation (at least it seemed that long).

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

Yikes. "Failed" indeed. Ambiguously fascinating character.
That's not what I'm looking for. The logo would have been appropriate to put on a helmt, this one would not be.

I saw an image of the logo in a newspaper, not just a fleeting glimpse, thus I remember as much as I do.

Wow, excellent research Wildo7

My memory is a little fuzzy (insert joke here), but weren't the Pats trying to wash away the bitterness of the end of the Chuck Fairbanks era with a new image, so they trotted out some new logos?

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

Huh. Interesting.
Not so far between the lower one and our current Elvis. Same profile, hat, star, and red flag trailing behind.

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

Damn! That is funny !

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

Congratulations to Wildo7! The guy below is definitely Elvis's, er ... flamboyant twin.

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

This would be a great find. I searched seven ways from Sunday on Google and couldn't find it. Pro'ly because it was pre-internet (August 24, 1979).

My bet is it is better than Elvis.

A dollar to whomever produces an image.

I believe Wildo07 has earned the dollar offered!

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

Those logos are horrid. Shame on the Sullivans for even suggesting them.

Re: Failed 1979 logo.

That's it! Thanks Wildo!

Edit: I should mention that I was on Uniwatch.com reading about best and worst uniforms, which eventually lead me to a column which spoke about the Patriot fans vote on a logo during the 70s, which I remembered seeing in a newspaper. The writer confessed he could not find the image despite his best efforts on Google. Neither could I find it, thus this thread.

Great work on finding those! Better than elvis, but still not as good as my man Pat.
