Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

So, what you're saying is that signing a non-Pats Fans authorized guy to compete for one of the last 6-12 spots on the roster is the equivalent of pedophilia? Interesting perspective.

You should probably go back and read his post again. Multiple times, if need be, because that's not even in the same solar system as the point he was making.

In the end, if Pass takes the utility man roster spot and beats out the likes of Green-Ellis and Edleman, why should we be shocked.

Is bringing back to compete for a special team spot really that different from bring back Banta-Cain?

Sure it is -- because Tully wasn't listed in the "historical players" category on NFL.com.

Maybe we should separate out the player and the circumstance. Pass was a useful player during his career, and with Evans heading elsewhere a Pass-type back would be a natural addition to the roster. The weird part is signing ANY player who hasn't suited up since 2007. When was the last time something like that happened?

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

The expletives regarding Patrick Pass were from Charlie Weis in Patriot Reign.

Speaking of Charlie, way back in the Smithfield summer camp days when you could stand right on the sidelines as they practised, it was always hilarious to listen to Weis totally rag on the RBs as he put them thru drills. Funny, sarcastic and profane. I miss those days.

Yeah, I do miss going down to Bryant. It was much more of an intimate atmosphere than camp is now.

The Jets signed Andre Wadsworth in 2007 even though he hadn't played (or been on an NFL roster) since 2000.

Well I am pretty sure he was in Houston's camp last year and was there until their last cut. So he hasn't played since last September and has been brough back to try again. Assuming Pass kept himself in decent shape, how is that any different than Shawn Crable? He hasn't played any football since August of 2008 either. The only difference is, Pass has NFL experience.

Pass was in Houston's camp in 2007. He hasn't been on an NFL roster since he was released by the Giants on November 27, 2007.

If you're trying to bother me you're going to have to do much better than that, girlfirend.

Okay. I assumed they worked him out to make sure he was in reasonable shape before signing him. I think the point is kinda the same too. Pass last played in 2007. Really the same with Crable, except that was at Michigan against Northwestern, etc. aside from a couple exhibition games with no game plans.

Again, assuming they did their due dilligence (and you can bet they did) and he is in reasonable shape I don't see the issue. He has plenty of experience. And he'll have to prove himself, conditioning wise, many times if he is to make a roster.

I really thought McClinton had a good chance to be on the practice squad.

He has good size and measurables and he was a leader for his team in cllege.

Must not have impressed in the head game, nor on special teams.

I agree here.

I thought that was the most surprising move here - dumping a young player with such outstanding measurables. He was big, durable, agile, an experienced three-year starter, and one of the fastest safeties in the draft. He sure looked like a good prospect for the Practice Squad, and someone who should be great on special teams as a gunner and vice player.

He must have screwed up in the OTA's to get released when there was no roster need.

Kenny Smith is aging.
Angelo Craig had no shot.
Cuff was way down the list.

On Pass, the Patriots do not have a versatile receiving fullback on the squad. Pass can run, catch the ball, and block a little. There's been a long list of players in that role over the years - Evans, Pass, Carter, Turner, etc.

That said, I would be shocked if he made the squad.

I wasn't watching during the Pass era, but after all the reading, I think this is the direct competition with Green-Ellis for a roster spot. And I think The Firm will win it.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

It's just an old joke. Another variation on the punchline is "but you suck one .... and you're forever known as a ....sucker'"

Thanks for the help, gentlemen. I had no idea that people would actually struggle with figuring out that post. I appreciate your efforts to steer them onto the right path.

I did think McClinton had a shot at a PSqd position...and he must have really missed it to be gone this soon. Craig had a shot...but I really believe with him it was a numbers game..an dmaybe didn't have it to stay. KSmith as you said was aging..and I think what that means is that they liked the younger guys better (Richard, Adams, Williams) With Cuff though, I think some thought he might have a shot at being a Faulk type player. He was just ON the outside and battling Green-Ellis as a young running back....Kettani as more a fullback (and with Navy committments) He obviously didn't show anything or they would have kept him around.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

Pass drafted in 2000. So unless you aren't counting the years he was out of the league, he has been "in the league" for 10 seasons.

You're right; I didn't count last year or 2007.

Would I rather have BJGE or the Pass of 2001-04? A - Pass.
Would I rather have BJGE or the Pass of 2006-09? A - BJGE.
Would I rather have Sapp, Pinnock, Southerland, et.al. or the Pass of 06-09? A - the former.

Why Southerland? He was just cut Wednesday after not being drafted. Cut in June. What performance in the NFL are you basing it on? Getting cut in June?

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

Why does everyone focus on a bad play when the guy had innumerable good plays here from 2000-2006? Go back and watch the 2004-2005 AFCCG at Pittsburgh and watch who throws the key block on Corey Dillon's long TD run in the second half.

He was a good player who played a lot of roles and had one terrible play people remember. Everyone says "the coaches hated him".....based on what? One anecdote in a Michael Holley book. He happened to be there for that one. How many has he not been there for over the years for other players? **** happens. Stuff gets said. Doesn't mean that is the end all be all of their opinion because a reporter happened to hear 1% of the comments that were said 7 years ago. He caught Weis on a frustated day. But guess what? Pass was on the team 7 straight years, earning increasing playing time as he went along, and was a 3 time Super Bowl winning player. Now they have re-signed him. Doesn't sound like they "hate" him to me, whether Weis had a frustrated day in 2002 7 years ago with him or not.

Why fans would laugh at and disparage a guy who was a key role player on numerous championship teams, the best teams in the history of the franchise they are supposedly fans of, is beyond me.

Soft spot for a fellow LSU Tiger, Greg?

Actually Pass went to Georgia! I should hate him!

But I actually like all SEC players. Well, except Peyton Manning.

Hard for them not to back you up there... you did provide the best allusion to his play with the team with that joke

Yes, I'm a douche, what can I say? I want to be like Mike.

I've never seen an egg roll here, come to think of it.
