The Media: Best and Worst

I care because I am going to check out some of the "good" ones that my fellow posters mentioned such as Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan.

And yes, it is slow so why not discuss it.
discussing the best chinese food joints in hong kong seems a bit more interesting , who has the best hunan chicken

That's funny, I'm actually in Hong Kong today for the first time in months. But forget the chicken. For dinner I'm going to Nobu, which I think is the best Japanese restaurant in the world.

Anyhoo, I bet the best Hunan chicken is somewhere here:

it must be really slow if we are talking about sportswriters, and who good and bad, who really cares

Better than talking about whether Gisele is preggers or what deep flaws BB must have as a parent because his kid was drinking. At least this topic is related to the NFL and football. And, as PJ pointed out, I actually learned a couple of things.

Reiss is the steadiest local reporter, but a lousy analyst, and he's really in the team's pocket, which limits his usefulness.

King is a great columnist who throws in some reporting when he goes live on television or radio.

Clayton is a great reporter, a less impressive analyst, and is someone who certainly doesn't shine BB's shoes.

Young is much like Reiss, although more willing to risk the wrath of the Patriots and the less rational portion of the fan base by (gasp) pointing out problems on occasion.

Felger is a crap-stirrer. It's an often effective way to build ratings and visibility, but it tends to grate on people fairly quickly.

Borges allows his personal feelings to destroy his credibility and undermine his talent.

Tomase is a poor reporter, even aside from the way he screwed the pooch on Super Bowl weekend.

Breer was a solid reporter who seems to have lost his fastball when he left the area.

Mortensen isn't really one who's focused on the Patriots at all, but he's a solid guy who's willing to go out on a limb. Unfortunately, for him, he's been off quite a bit lately, and it's damaged his credibility for the moment.

Silver just likes to play the cynic, for any or no reason.

Prisco is a hack. He may be the worst in the business. Bayless isn't much better.

CHFF used to be the best at breaking things down. Now, they have an agenda that ruins their effectiveness. Success may well ruin that site.

Curran usually does a great job, but his accuracy rate seems to have fallen off.

Price posts a lot of great stuff here, but he's generally slower than most of the other 'beat' reporters. Someone's got to finish the race last, and Chris seems to do it quite a bit. I don't know why it is, and I don't intend this as a knock, since there are plenty of valid reasons not to rush stories.

Dr. Z. hasn't been worth reading since, probably, before many of the fans here were born.

Jaws is a tremendous analyst, especially when it comes to covering the QB position.

Carucci has been playing with a loaded deck and still doesn't impress me.

Witlock is another crap-stirrer. He's better at it than Felger, because he ranges wider and can get away with more.

Schlereth, Jackson, Hoge, and most former players, are effective in little niches and all but useless outside of that area. They can't maintain an effective degree of objectivity, and they flail when asked about things outside their comfort zone. Most of them are very solid when they are relaxed and talking about familiar things, though.

Schefter was fine when playing with a loaded deck. How he'll be when he's not being spoon fed the info is something that bears watching.

I'm sure I missed several people, but I figure this is a good look into how I view these people. In my opinion, the key is to take what they say and weigh it against past performance, and to try to always be willing to adjust your opinion based upon how they've been recently more so than in the more distant past.

Excellent breakdown Deus.

If I'm not mistaken didn't Dr. Z have a stroke last fall? I can't recall seeing anything he has written in quite a while, so I presume he's still trying to recover from that. I will agree his predictions had become useless in recent years.

Personally I would add Lombardi and Bowen from the National Football Post. And I'm surprised Florio's name hasn't been mentioned, since Pro Football Talk gets quoted here fairly often.

Kirwan, Reiss, Lombardi

Z. did have a stroke, and it's apparently been an expensive situation with a long recovery prognosis. While I think he's been coasting on fumes as a writer for years, I wish him all the best in his recovery and hope he can get back to doing the job he loves.

In dealing with Lombardi, you're right in that I should have mentioned him. I consider him inconsistent, and I think he lets personal bias impact his stuff too much. It gets in the way of some otherwise valid points. I think he's worth the read, but I'd suggest verifying his claims before going with them.

As for Florio, his work on gathering the real time sports news is tremendous. His real time info gathering is probably the best in the business in terms of speed on the national level, and he undermines the site with the other crap. Always, ALWAYS, get a second source with this guy. If his post doesn't have a link to verify his story, consider it false until proven otherwise.

P.S. Thank you very much for the compliment.

I pretty much fall on the expected party lines (Breer, Reiss, Curran, SMY, etc. are my faves), I'll take the time to throw out one radio show not often mentioned worthy listening to for Pats talk - and thats 890's ESPN show in the afternoon. It used to be Lew&Mike, now its Boston Sports Show w no Lew, but Mike Valley, Kevin Winter & Bob Lobel. Valley & Winter are the big pats fans and can get some pretty good football talk going...def worth listening to during the football season or key-points of the offseason

I agree, nice job Deus. Far too often people on this website think that Patriots praise equals quality reporting and Patriots criticism equals poor reporting. I think Borges, over anyone, delivers some of the best work on the Patriots when he is justifiably critical.

As for Reiss, he is incredible at reporting daily's which is great as a fan, but he doesn't really do a whole lot of journalism and it is clear he and the Patriots have an "understanding" where they provide access he provides a platform for Patriot controlled media.

Excellent breakdown Deus.

Indeed it was.

I'm surprised so many people really like Peter King since his reasons/facts for supporting his beliefs are so often off-base (that's a polite way of saying wrong). That being said, I still read him; I just no longer give his opinions much credence. :)

I enjoy Mike and Mike in the morning a lot. Even when I disagree with their opinions, they always seem to have a rational reason for their thinking. And, of course, they are very entertaining.

No one has mentioned Phil Simms or Boomer Esiason, both who are very level-headed when it comes to analyzing not only the Patriots but the NFL in general.

I don't watch much ESPN analysis anymore since it is often sensationalist and overblown so I can't give a very informed opinion of the analysts. But no one here seems to care much for them. Except Jaws who I love and is by far my favorite analyst.

I can't stand Whitlock - even when I read articles by him that I don't know he wrote. He seems to always get it wrong.

Good breakdown Deus. I agree on Reiss. While he normally is the first with all the positive news and offers a ton of informative articles (like analyzing the rosters, game formations, snaps played, etc.), he seems afraid to really dig into the other important teams news: contract squabbles, in-depth injury news, criminal matters etc. It almost seems like he covers the team as if he were on the team.

This year, especially during free agency, I thought Adam Shefter really stood out. No one on ESPN, Sports Illustrated can compare to him.

I used to like Peter King, but I cannot stand all the useless crap in his columns, coffee, travel and dining notes. Who cares. I'm also tired of hearing him talk about who's texting him, and his infatuation with Brett Favre.

I guess I don't have a favorite, maybe Schefter I guess. Lombardi seems OK, but I don't buy half the stuff he writes.

I will add in the plus side...MORE for Chris Price and Shalise Young on the local front.who I forgot but wish to thirdly nominate...Kirwin, Sando on the national front and Holley on radio...I do like listening to the Big Show (at times...more in football season..)..but they have quite a different tone...Holley makes sense most of the time with football..and that is good to hear.
Dislike...I really have to add in King...who I can read and do listen to because he is connected..I STILL think he's a hypocrite and for that I will never LIKE him...Then there are the ESPNers..Schlereth, Bayless etc etc...Yuk!! I hardly watch ESPN at all...even Mike and Mike who I will take some in the AM (instead of DC who are terrible..) I listen to/watch less.
Good post. Lots of agreement from me. I neglected to cite Chris Price, who is always top-shelf. My apologies, Chris.

Best: Don Banks, Mike Lombardi, Matt Bowen, Andrew Brandt, Jack Betcha (in fact, the entire National Football Post is fantastic), Peter King (his anecdotes really don't bother me).

Can you provide an example of such a piece? I'm actually curious to see it because I've been under the impression that his hatred for BB blinds him.

Speaking for myself only. I could care less if they praise or bash. During the ****gate period, I made a mental note of everyone in the media who tried to f*ck us, and have maintained my hatred for them ever since :D If they were objective about it, then i have no problem with them. However, thats a really short list

So thats how i basically judge certain mediots. Yes, it's living in the past, but im ok with that :D

Plus: Rich Gosselin, Vic Ketchman -- two local guys who are national institutions.

I think that there may be a lot of local beat reporters around the nation who have very high standards. (This article by someone called Bernie Miklasz who works for the St. Louis Post-Despatch on the Rams' possible sale is excellent -- crisp, clear, extremely well-informed but not taking sides: May 31: Q & A on the Potential Sale of the St. Louis Rams | Bernie’s 5 Minutes | STLtoday Reporters like that deserve a lot of credit.)

Minus: pretty much every national columnist, starting with "Dr" Z and Peter King and working upwards.

Your impression of him is 100% correct, and hatred might be a term which isn't strong enough.
