Wilfork seeking new deal...

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

not sure why everyone is giving it to Reiss so bad....Seems like a valid story to me. Vince has made it clear thru the media he wants a new deal...Here we are in late May and still nothing....Then Reiss is speculating the Tweeting during OTAs meant he may not be at OTAs and tells he will watch for that today. Not sure what is wrong with the story. Its not like this is something out of the blue it has been brewing for sometime.

I have no problem with Reiss. It's slow news time and he has to file columns. When I saw that Wilfork was seeing a new deal, I thought there was news, which there isn't.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

Reiss shoulda waited until 11AM today and then IF Wilfy was MIA, written his speculation with more fodder. So...is Wilfy on the field or not??? If Twitter has ANY use, one of the many Twits here should let us know the answer.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

He has a contract for this year. I expect him to honor it. Was he at the ota's?
Read the link. Patriots aren't saying if he was at OTA, but Reiss received 3 Wilfork tweets while OTA was in progress, inidciating that Wilfork might not be there, and the whole point is whether or not he will honor his contract or do like Seymour, Branch, Samuel, etc who got concessions from the Pats by holding out (extension, trade, no franchise tag).

Someone put Grumpium in the water supply, it seems. Looked like a decent article to me, too. Taking what is known and working with it. I don't see any outlandish claims, only "this is what is going on, and it could mean this, and if so here is a likely outcome."

He didn't twist facts or ignore facts to push an agenda like Felger, or go with sensationalism like BSPN.

But then, I'm partial to his reporting style.

Neither do I. It's a fair assessment of the current situation and Wilfork is a professional athlete looking to capitalize on his situation at the best time. So far, Wilfork has been respectable in his comments and very business-like and Reiss is just reporting the way he's supposed to. He doesn't have the luxury of being a kool-aid drunk homer like myself and doesn't have to be a bitter little man like a "Borges wannabe". Hopefully, this whole situation can be resolved and Wilfork remains a Patriot. If he doesn't sign a deal I think Wilfork would honor his contract and deal with it at the end of the season. This whole situation doesn't behoove the Pats to wait until he's a free agent and have to either franchise him or let him hit the open-market.

So than you don't like the articles written sunday morning before the games? they should wait til they are played? I know that is a little overboard as an example but what is the big deal with Writing an article about something to keep an eye on at todays OTAs?

I guess a better example would have been all the Brady drama by your logic they all should have waited to write about Brady's return until they see him on the field.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

I understand the idea of waiting until next year when he could max out during the much hyped "uncapped" year, but the truth is we don't even know if that is going to happen. They could settle the whole thing and the uncapped year would go by the wayside.

They should be doing whatever they can to lock this guy in.

By your 'logic' waiting 24 hours = waiting months. DUH!

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

I did not see anything wrong with the piece..it's HARDLY close to Borges or Felger..... As far as Twittering is concerned Wilfork did that yesterday during practice NOT today per the Reiss chat. It's offseason and there REALLY is not a lot going on. My hope is IF he decides to protest the situation that it's more like Seymour than AS or DB. Make your point and get something done so that something MORE can be done in the future. IF it is true that he could get a balloon salary next year if it was uncapped...in many ways it makes sense to wait...What MIGHT be needed is something now to get things started as they did with Seymour.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

If I didn't think he was on to something I would have left it up to someone else to post...but something is fishy with Wilfork. To me Reiss is usually one of the better beat writers so for him to think that something may be up with Wilfork to me is something worth posting.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

I see nothing wrong with the article. Many here don't want to hear anything other than the details of Wilfork's new contract. I certainly don't blame them.

Reiss reported that Wilfok was focusing on twittering at the same time at the OTA's were going on. That seems a reasonable item to report on a slow news day.

If Wilfork doesn't sign an extension before next year, then maybe we will recall this article as well as many other signs and clues.

And to state the obvious, the drafting of Brace makes more sense than ever, even if there is no substance to this article and Wilfork was hard at work yesterday and today.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

And how much of Kraft's money and cap money should we GIVE Wilfork? Is Wilfork worth more than Haynsworth? Is more than $50M guaranteed over four years reasonable? Surely Wilfork is worth $13M a year.

NO ONE on this board has posted a contract that was reasonable to Wilfork, the team and was feasible under the current cap and current CBA conditions.

I really wish the Patriots would just give the guy an extension already, there is no need to play a game with one of th top NTs in the game. WIlfork is definitly worth the money.

The only player the Pats will re-sign at market value is Gostowski.

If they cannot reach an agreement with him before free agency, he

will be given the franchise tag. Mankins, Seymour, and Wilfork will be

permitted to seek other teams.

Seems to me that is news....unless the guy has his blackberry under his helmet or his wife was using his account, he was not on the field yesterday during the OTA. To me, that is newsworthy and not a very good sign.

Thank you Mike Reiss for picking up on that and reporting it.

By the way....no tweets from Wilfork since yesterday at 10:30 AM as of 12:55 PM today.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

For a moment, let us presume that we sign Gostkowski to a long-term extension before 2010 free agency begins. Why wouldn't we franchise Wilfork?

Even if we use the exclusive tag on Gostkowski, why would we put the transition tag on Wilfork?

I don't know why you'd mention the current cap conditions. We've been assured that the Patriots have no cap issues at all. I'm sure that in the next couple of weeks they'll work out contracts for every single player who's deal is expiring. There's scads of money available, so we're told.

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

I mention the cap situation because it is relevant. I do NOT think that it would be prudent to secure cap money in order to use $10M of cap money to extend Wilfork to a Haynsworth type contract. I do NOT think we have any SERIOUS cap needs since I don't think it prudent to extend Wilfork this season. Some think it reasonable to use $10M of cap money for Pepper or Cassel. I am not one of those folks.

they will not resign him for 13 million. dont forget they have to resign brady as well, if brace fills in nicely this year wilfork is a goner if hes looking to break the bank

Re: Wilfork seeing new deal...

What is the big deal? This is an OTA session, not minicamp or training camp. If he doesn't show up for minicamp or training camp, then I'll worry. OTAs are not mandatory are they?
