Patriots sign Joey Galloway [mergedx4]

Do you think that this signing is going to be like Lynch was last year? We have him through training camp then we cut him before the regular season starts?

I wasn't too excited about this pick up, because he is 37 years old and is kinda getting up there in age, but it does add that option to have some serious competition for the 3rd WR spot. I can't wait to see what happens when Training Camp comes around and the pre-season starts.

exactly what I was thinking, this is gonna bring some heated battles in camp, even if joey does end up being cut. It's a win/win.

I look at the three "S's" for positions like safey and WR - smarts, skills, and speed

Everyone recognized that Lynch, even if fully healthy, had slowed considerably and wasn't able to be a full service Safety so the excitement level of most who recognized this wasn't all that high. The smarts where there but the skills and speed had dropped off.

In Galloway's case, he's not lost speed, retains his skills, and remains a smart WR - though injuries are a concern.

We will have to see if he has lost the speed this year, coming off of a broken foot injury that put him on IR last year. That always seems to have an impact on what the player can come back to do.

I know that when i broke my foot 3 years ago, When i started to run again when it was fully healed, it was really weird. It took me a while to get back up to full speed.

Now im not an NFL player that has the top of the line medical staff that is there to help me get to 100% as fast as possible, but it still seems like it could still be difficult for him to get back up to the speed he was at.

1) Galloway was likely signed for a year.
2) Our #3 is Lewis.
3) Our #4 is Aiken.

Are we are we reall discussing whether Galloway is an upgrade over Aiken for 2009?

and BTW, if Galloway is injured, Aiken and Slater will still be here. After all they are on the roster as special teamers.

I think this is all wrong. Why are you handing the #3 job to Lewis when galloway is one year removed from a 1,000 yard season? Galloway has little special teams value, why are you comparing him to Aiken?

I just wanna know if he can block on Welker's slip screens. :D

This is exactly what I am thinking. I haven't seena lot of Galloway, but when I posed this question on the board a couple of weeks ago, it was said that he's crap at it. I sure hope BB can squeeze some blocking out of the guy.

I would of liked to draft a WR this yr and have him develop and in 3 yrs (when wrs usually break out) he will be able to replace Moss, but now with Galloway and Lewis who are both just are short term answers, we most likely wont be drafting a wr this yr. Lewis is a complete waste I would of rather picked a wr in the 5th round than him

I think thats why some of us want AD at SILB. The best our defense has played in the last two years was for the games in which AD was at SILB before the Colvin injury in 2007. He can move outside in passing situations.

AD is much better at OLB, I think.

Also, moving him inside leaves us perilously thin at OLB.

AD-Guyton-Mayo-Woods > Woods-AD-Mayo-Banta Cain (?)

Of course, this doesn't take into account the draft. Obviously, though, this appears to be a position of need. We also don't know how players like Crable and Redd will fit into the equation.

I really havent seen much of JG. But here is a short clip from nfl.com

Agreed that as the roster is now, AD has to be outside due to the need, and that the AD-Woods lineup on the outside is better than Woods-TBC w AD inside.

As for AD at OLB v ILB - I like him a lot at both. I like him at OLB, rushing the passer on the edge on third downs, w the versatility to drop back and be above average in coverage. But I also liked the strength, size and speed he brought to SILB, and think he'd be an upgrade in run defense and in pass coverage over Bruschi/Guyton. My absolute ideal situation would be one in which AD is playing inside in the 3-4, and then moves outside in the nickel.

But, ultimately, its not possible given the current roster and the fact that the draft isn't going to supply any immediate upgrades over Woods/TBC.

Roll those safeties to Moss, I dare ya, I dirty double dog dare ya!:D

What excites me about Galloway/Moss/Welker is that all three of them can beat single coverage 80% of the time, Moss probably close 90%, and one of them will have it on every play.

I was hoping for Torry Holt for sure. I'll be honest, I am a 'big name' kind of fan. As I said, I was really hoping for Holt, but I think Galloway might be an even better pickup for the Pats taking everything into consideration.

Both Holt and Galloway seem like guys who could fit the role of 'the other WR split wide opposite Moss and Welker'.

Galloway's speed is something to keep an eye on. In this offense there is no way that he gets double coverage.

The downside is that teams will have no choice but to go after Brady with everything they've got. The O-line will need to be at its best every game.

Technically, but with two real vertical threats, and what might be the best year for this version of the O-Line (extra rest, no puppies) and very good blocking TE's & RB's, Welker sailing over the middle that's a HUGE risk.

I think the scheme will revolve around showing the house blitz to fail at an epic level, removing the likelihood of facing it much. Also, the breakdowns in the Giants game have been corrected. Watching attempts to Kill Cassel once the O-line got back to form and Matt got up to game speed prove that.

Yip. Picture Deltha O'Neal (who I don't personally hate, despite his failings last year) chasing receivers with no hop of catching them.

Now picture much better corners looking equally silly chasing a man who entered the league when they were in primary school.

With no health issues, I think Joey has 11 TD's this year, 8 of which occur after 50+ yards of RAC.

Great signing. JG is old, but he can still burn. As much as I like Holt, I prefer Galloway cuz he's a better fit IMO. Holt is likely to get more than 1 year from someone, and speed on the outside is really what we need. At this point, who are the WR's that make the final roster? Lewis plays special teams, but Welker, Moss, and Galloway do not.
