If he has anything left, this is a good signing. Otherwise, it is a low risk move, but not a huge amount of upside.
I would disagree. It is a low risk move with a huge amount of upside.

Who knows whether we'll see Galloway reach that upside at 37 and coming off injuries, but the upside would be last year was just an off year due to injuries and he's the 1,000+ yard, elite deep threat receiver he's been the last 3 years prior to this season.

Love it.
Could be a great third WR, flanking opposite Moss.
Add Lewis and a very speedy four-wide formation.
This team is deep, and that's before those six draft picks.
Holy cow, what a great off-season.

If Galloway is signed first, I do not think the trade for Lewis is neccesary.

Disagree. BB has always stocked up on players like both these guys in the off season, knowing that some will stick and some will not ;)

Plus, they gave up little for Lewis. If Galloway returns to form, that's a sick 4WR set.

And there will be people in Cleveland, KC and Denver watching the waiver wire for NE cuts...........

If he makes

One more catch more than gaffney

i.e. Indy's drop he is worth it.

Plus he can stretch field with moss and we can screen and run the ball until the cows come home

Sure it is. Galloway is old and not very durable. If he stays healthy, he can contribute, but that's far too big of a risk to take.

You've convinced me. If Lewis gets cut, then so be it, fith round picks sometimes get cut. Might as well assume the FO already looked at the talent that would be around then and thought this was a better move.

Kool-aide time I guess.

I believe the report had the Patriots getting a 7th back in return, so it's really even less than a 5th round pick in that sense. It's a 5th minus a 7th.

One interesting little side note - Pat's WR depth, even before the draft:

Randy Moss
Wes Welker
Joey Galloway
Greg Lewis
Sam Aiken
Matt Slater

Pats typically keep five receivers, possibly six.
There's a decent chance the Pats end up with a receiver in the draft, what with eleven picks or so.

Matt Slater? Nice knowing ya.

Slater has utility at positions other than WR.

I doubt they'll get rid of another ST'er.

Well, I'll agree that Slater played other positions.
Not ready to consent to actual utility at other positions.

He drops pass attempts.
He drops kick-offs.
He drops interception attempts.

So I guess the same utility at other positions.

There is no particular reason to think of Aiken and Slater as wide receivers. They are not on the team to be wide receivers, although Aiken did catch a few last year. And, no, Slater was no on the team to be a returner. However, you are correct, we do usually list a couple of special teamers as wide receivers.

Aiken and Slater are arguably our best special teamers. They are locks for the 53 man roster.

I'm starting to see that Kool-Aid is rivaled only by tunnel-vision around here.

Everyone sees a drop or a fumble and suddenly the guy is a bust.

Aiken had one of my favourite catch and runs last year. Lewis could challenge Slater for his roster spot, but otherwise, I don't see him going anywhere. They can both leave a track of heat.

The Galloway signing is my favourite one so far. A PROVEN deep threat. 37 or not, he's gonna annoy the ever-loving crap out of opposing DC's.

What's the over/under on how long before someone starts the "There's no way Joey Galloway makes this team" thread?

Scouting Report - Joey Galloway

Assets: Still very fast. A top deep threat. Has a vast array of double moves to set up defenders. Will make catches in traffic when called upon.

Flaws: Doesn't have great initial quickness anymore and struggles to get open on shorter routes. Can get taken out of the gameplan by top corners.

Career potential: Fading Pro Bowler.

Super sweet move. I like Galloway even better than Greg Lewis who we got for a 5th rounder. I think the WR corps is set and we can stop worrying about drafting a 3rd WR early now. Anybody we drafted probably wouldn't even crack the top 4. Galloway CAN stretch the field. That's been proven. And it will help free Moss up a bit more.

BB is god!!!

So do folks think there's any benefit to using Galloway deep opposite Moss?

Does anyone think that might open up the offense more? Let Galloway take advantage of the coverage Moss and Welker require?

Seems to me this is Belichick's plan - or at least his hope - in signing Galloway... we'll have to see if he can stay on the field. If he can it's a substantial upgrade over Gaffney.

yeah he might be 37 years old but i guarantee you he is still one of the fastest players in league. thats whats so ridiculous about him..that old and still blazing.
