I doubt it would take anywhere near our first 5 picks to get to #3. The value chart for the top 10 is basically meaningless at this point. With the monetary risk involved in going that high in the draft no one is paying a ransom in picks to get there and the teams that are there will move down for far less. That said, it doesn't matter what it would take for the Pats to get to #3 since they wouldn't be interested anyways.

How are the Pats going to pay him? Free season tickets?

The Pats can still use the BPA at almost any position. Starting QB and K are pretty much the only position groups that are full-up long-term.

BB could trade back but that's not because he's worried about fitting the #23 under the cap this year.

If there's a player they like at #23 they will take him - and if there isn't they will trade back. It's actually pretty simple.

BB likely isn't drafting "for this year" either - but that doesn't mean he doesn't find value in picks in all rounds, including the 1st.

Corners take a couple years to develop, we already have two promising players with Wilhite and Wheatley, now we have Bodden and Springs to step right in while those two guys develop furthur. Maybe he takes another on draft day for a year or two down the line. Boddens only a one year stopgap.
Plus maybe losing Hobbs, can never have too many quality players on defense.

I really don't get this thinking. It's not just the OP, it's a bunch of different posters saying "now we can trade our picks into 2010!" "Now we should trade out of the 1st!" Etc. I think this is misguided for a bunch of reasons:

- 24 hours ago CB wasn't near the top of my round-1 wish list anyway. It will be very, VERY easy to fill the first day with LB, DL, OL, S & WR.

- The Pats have carefully assembled a terrific collection of picks in a high-value portion of a high-quality draft. One of those picks (#47) has already been traded forward 2 years in a row.

- Your statement in bold above: "The Patriots are all set for the next year imo." Of course they are, that's how they operate. They work the mid-range of free agency to plug all their holes before the draft. That leaves them with maximum flexibility to aim for value and entertain deals on draft day. It also lets them use the draft in the ideal way, which is to fill NEXT year's holes with guys who have had a year to learn and adjust. (Think how we all knew they would target a safety high in 2007 because they would need one in 2008.) And this team faces some huge potential losses in 2010, especially along both lines.

IOW, plugging immediate holes in free agency doesn't mean you don't need the draft -- it means you're ready for the draft.

Full agreement with this post. When you look at the normal time it takes players to get acclimated to the NFL from college, getting players in a year or two early is the thing to do. If you don't, you are normally wasting a season of "learning". The Pats will have holes to fill....this is the draft to do it relatively cheaply.

I have felt for awhile that the team tries to be strong in all positions going into the draft...so they do not have immediate holes and can lean toward BAA..instead of nedd in an area...although the latter is always in the large picture. Remember how they got Wilfork?? He fell and fell and the Pats were in the right place at the right time...I think the KC pick is perfect for a 1st rounder that dropped...RIGHT to the Pats.

i am still skeptical i mean i like bodden and the fact we got him cheap buuuut i also thought fernando bryan was going to start last year... probabl a little naive on m part but still
