What's up with Bodden?

is it your idea or you red this?

Those where the numbers Adam Schefter reported:

The three-year deal has a max value of $12.8 million.

However, in today's NFL that hardly qualifies as a big contract. Also, depending on how it is structured his cap number probably isn't prohibitive this season. I doubt the Springs deal will keep them from getting other players they want to get.

Bodden is probably still out there trying to find the right fit. He played all 16 games last year and is only 27 years old. From what I read, they said Detriot's Tampa-2 defense wasn't a good fit for him. He is a big CB, so he probably is a better fit playing man and jamming guys than staying back in a zone. Not everyone uses their CB that way.

My guess is he wants more than he is worth. He isn't a fit in every scheme, so maybe he isn't garnering enough interest. The Pats may want him for a specific role, but that role isn't as a full-time starter. Or, maybe it is just money.

Either way, it is early in FA and he will find a home before the draft.

I haven't seen enough of Bodden to be certain, but he's struck me as the kind of big CB that uses his length to his advantage playing over top in deep zones, not the kind that uses his size to disrupt passing lanes in short ones. There are variations of Cover 2 schemes, but most require some kind of jam at between 0-5 yards so the receiver can't get a clean outside release.

I haven't seen enough of him to judge either, I'm just going by what I read. Specifically, he was said to be a poor fit in Detriot's Tampa-2 scheme last year.

The Pats don't play Tampa-2 though. They do employ a cover 3 at times. Our defense is similar to Cleveland's and that is where Bodden played his best.

I noticed on BSPN's stat compilation for Bodden that he made 80+ tackles last season. That's more than anyone else at that position. Does this mean he sucks and can't cover but is right there to make the tackle, everyone else sucked, or is he a ballhawk?

Cover 2 systems rely on the corner to act as a force player on outside runs. They also have flat coverage so you'd expect them to be first on the scene of any dump offs to the backs. All this means Cover 2 CBs usually make more tackles than other CBs, because they are supposed to.

Incidentally, both Minneapolis' (Winfield, Griffin) and Chicago's (Tillman, Graham) starting corners had more tackles than Bodden. They both run Cover 2 systems and are in the same division (NFC North), which features run-first offenses and weak QB play.

The other defense in the division, Green Bay, uses man coverage as a base and it is consequently unsurprising Charles Woodson lead the Packer CBs in tackles with 62, trailing both safeties.

The Pats just announced the Sanders deal yesterday or Thursday.

In a classic Tampa-2 system, you like bigger CB's.

The Pats have tended to use 5-9 to 5-10 CB's who are very quick. The Pat's system is designed make the right read, break on the ball, and be there when the ball arrives. Larger DL and LB cover the run and shorter zones.

In the Tampa-2 system, CB's often play back a bit more, keep the play in front of them, and come up on the receiver or runner. The smaller, faster front seven attack, and the bigger secondary cleans up.

Most of the free agent corners the Pats have signed have been smaller, quicker guys. Sanders was about the biggest corner the Pats have used the past three or four years, and he didn't really have a primary role. But look at the players they have targeted recently - Poole, Starks, Bryant, Wheatley, Wilhite - mostly 5-10, 190, quick corners.

However, note that Springs is also 6-0, 200+, so he is the biggest guy they've had in a while.

Given the size of the deal, it's much less likely they pursue Bodden hard. I'm surprised at the size - three years, max $12.8 mm. That's over $4mm a year - so Bodden must want significantly more than that. But that's not that much less than Greer at $5mm or so a year.

Given the size of the deal, sounds like the corner depth chart will be:
Hobbs
Springs
Wheatley
Wilhite
Rookie

Actual order to be determined through pre-season.

Aside from Bodden, what's up with McFadden? I figured there would be a lot more interest around the league with him, but from what I can tell Arizona and Pittsburgh have been the only teams to express any interest. Just seems a little bit odd that he's not shopping himself around a little bit more in an effort to get a better contract.

Word here in Pgh is that it's a 4 team race between

PGH
ARZ
PHILLY
MIAMI

Dont know why we at least haven't looked at him. Word is he's looking for abt 5 mill /yr to max of 6 mill /yr. Lot of positives with McFadden, I thought we'd be all over him, also thought the price was right. Apparently BB didn't think so, I'd rather him go to an NFC team than PGH or MIAMI

Well, I'm thinking the Pats are prepared to spend anothe $6M - $7M in cap space, so McFadden is probably too pricey; my guess is that they'll split that between two or three players. Still, I'm kind of surprised other teams with room (e.g., Tampa) haven't shown interest.

The Shawn Springs deal is supposedly 12.8 million for 3 years.

I doubt this leaves very much money for signing Bodden.

Really?
That seems like too much. They must have felt they needed to get this guy because they didn't see any better options.
