I still have hopes for LoMo, but not quite what they were when we drafted him. Like most, I thought he'd be a 20-25 carries per game and 1,000 yard rusher, but I think that ship has sailed, hence the reason BB carries 4 RB on the roster. I would love to be proven wrong this year, but I doubt he can stay healthy for a full season.

I think the people who say "wait until the end of this year" are being a little too optimistic.

Unlike QBs and WRs, RBs are expected to produce earlier in their careers as opposed to the latter years. Maroney was a first round pick and his production has not even come close to the expectations set by a first round running back. He just seems to lack the vision to break some long runs.

....I also want to add that as a first round pick, you expect someone special. Did we suffer any when Maroney was lost for the season last year? No, not at all, because he can effectively be replaced by Sammy Morris. Therefore, he is not special, he is 'just another guy', and hence a bust.

Breakout season coming through.....We won't need to run the ball anyway's after we sign TO.

I Just hope were not saying the same thing next year, and the year after.[/QUOTE]

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Hart Lee Dykes is the future of the New England Patriots.

Okay I kid because I love. Maroney is a bust when BB says he is. That said it's nice to have Fred around.

Right, but do you think BB would've used a 1st round pick on a guy he gets part-time contributions out of? The whole thing gets me thinking how much better BB is at picking defensive players high in the draft than offensive.

I've hoped Maroney would bust through style wise, but are we anything near objective on this bust BS?

Discounting his injury season last year, here are his stats.

2006...745 yards 4.3/ypc

2007...835 yards 4.5/ypc

I think he will have a good year. Coming off the injury he has had a lot of time to rest. Hopefully thru training camp he will show some promise and have a stellar year.

He's been disappointing, sure, but he's young, talented, doesn't cost much, and has flashed some real potential when he's on the field. Not exactly what you want from a first round pick, but not exactly bust-worthy.

Exactly correct. I think Maroney and Ben Watson are pretty much the same - they haven't been busts, but they haven't lived up to their potential or to what we've come to expect from Pats 1st round picks. Partly we've been somewhat spoiled by Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, Mankins, Mayo, and (probably) Meriweather. Maroney definitely dances too much, isn't as tough as I'd like, and has had some injuries. But, "he's young, talented, doesn't cost much, and has flashed some real potential when he's on the field." Couldn't say it any better.

We have him for 2 more years and my guess is he stays as a cost-effective piece of our RB by committee. If he doesn't show more consistency and production, then I likely see us looking for a replacement in the next 2 years.

No doubt Maroney is a bust. With a potent passing offense and TB, Moss, Welker being the very best of their positions (QB, Wideout, slot), the running game can be successful with even average talent. You could argue the team has been more successful with Morris, Jordan and BJEG. Maroney has performed like a 5th rounder so far; he is not worthy the 1st round pick the team wasted on him.

Look Joseph Addai, who was picked after Maroney in the same class. The guy is lethal in Colts offense. No doubt he benefited also from a potent passing offense with Manning and Wayne. But Addai has consistently gained 6-7 yards a pop; he carries colts offense especially in playoff. The guy is also a first-down machine, converting like 75-80% of third down carries into first downs. He is an excellent receiving threat coming out of backfield. Remember he turn a dump-off pass into 72 yard touchdown catch and run just before half-time in the last game against Pats?

Addai is a much better runner, better blocker, much much better receiver than Maroney. Addai was drafted after Maroney, costs less, and played much bigger role to Colts offense than Maroney has ever been able to achieve.

Maroney was drafted in the first round, but can easily been replaced by guys like Jordan, BJGE. His contribution to Pats is limited. Therefore he is a bust. No doubt in my mind.

There were ramblings about Maroney and Chad Jackson's work ethics and maturity a couple years ago. Maybe the source of lack of progress:confused:.

Well put on all counts. Once you draft them, it doesn't matter where they were selected. Use them for tyheir talents then reevaluate at contract time.

I think the injuries do make you wonder if he is physically tough enough for the NFL. he has great athletic ability, let's just hope he can survive a 16 wk regular season.

Is it possible that he would be better suited in a 3rd down type role?
I am not saying here and now for us necessarily, but in general.
I think he's been under-utilized as a receiver out of the backfield.

That role might also save some wear and tear on his shoulder.

Injuries do not make a player a bust. By that logic Robert Edwards was a bust too.

He's not a bust yet. But I agree with the consensus that this is a make or break year.

He's been plagued by injuries, but I don't like the way he runs. Sometimes he looks tentative - slow to the hole and does not seem to have a natural reaction when the hole's not there or not where it's supposed to be. Other times it seems like he should put the shoulder down and pound for an extra few yards and he doesn't.

This is ridiculous. Moroney has become the teams' official scapegoat. You cannot help being injured, ESPECIALLY if you're playing a position like RB. I can't see all the hate being heaped on a RB with a 4.5+ ypc average. If you want to complain that he's been injury prone, THAT's legitimate, but to say he's a bust, as in not talented or productive enough to justify a low !st round pick, you are greatly mistaken....not that anything I've writen will change the hater's minds.

from the start that I saw him dance, I knew it was a bust.

Let him another year of issues, dancing mode and stupid decision.

I remeber the AFC championship game in 2006 when he doesnt look the handoff in a goal line play, before the tackle touchdown .

We do have the CJack example to draw on (in terms of whether BB has ever drafted a high round bust.) I think that colors our view of Maroney. We got a contributer but not an all-pro back. We're getting pretty damn close to where we can say, "okay, we know what we got here. Not overwhelming." But a "bust"? I think of guys that hurt the team rather than help it by being on the field. That's not really the category Maroney's in.

Maroney is a lost cause. His market value is below a 5th rounder if you tried to trade him today. He is injury prone, limited as a runner, ineffective as a blocker or backfield receiver. In other words, he is the anti-Joseph Addai. The cold fact is, Maroney is a bust for a 1st rounder. The team has done everything for him to be successful. It just take some people longer to accept the truth. By start of 2011 season, he will be in a FA and maybe picked up for a spot on practice squad, then be released again and that will be the end of his football career. He will be rembered like Chad Jackson, Bethel Johnson.

We had high hopes for him when he came out Minnesota. But some people are destined to be Great College Player.

trade him now! cause after this year, we ain't gonna get nuttin :) Too much dancing, too many injuries, he doesn't power through the line like Morris or Jordan even did. I say we trade him for a decent CB
Absolutely. He will not change a running style that he has done all his life.
He was never a full time back. His trade value is as high as it will ever be. They did not bring Taylor in to sit on the bench end of story! Share?........ Yes, Taylor and Morris.
Cousins, if you believe that there will be a three way share of touches, I beg to differ.
Send him to RB staved and the "we need weapons" McNabb pouting Eagles for Gocong which is a very fair trade. Gocong could be the new Vrabel. The Eagles have three talented OLBs.
Next years value is nada cousins.
