Heath Evans is a Saint

He's a real good fit for that offense. Brees loves tossing the ball to his backs, and Evans is a RB in a FB's body.

EDIT: Incidentally, their current fullback, Matt Karney, is much more a lead-blocker type. I wonder if the Pats would bring him in if he were cut, since we seem to be establishing a power-running stable of backs.

I've always liked Mike Karney and would like to see them take a long look at him.

Oh my god. I'm so pissed. Heath was such a class act... ugh!! Why couldn't we sign him?

Probably because they don't re-sign people just because they happen to be nice guys.

I know FB's are a dying breed but I would've liked Evans to re-sign with the Pats. Evans was valuable in the passing game and was a good short yardage blocker. I think he will do well with the Saints. Who will replace him?

I am not sad to see Heath go. I hope the Patriots pick up a FB such as Leonard Weaver fromt he Seahawks, Terrelle Smith from the Cardinals or Justin Griffith from the Raiders. I can't see the Pats using Hochstein, Connolly or Wendell all year in the role.

The other option is to take someone in the draft or as a UDFA.

The Pats will do exactly that; Hochstein's success in the jumbo FB role will be a regular feature. No new FB's, but 2 back sets may be developed as we morph away from the failed practice of zone blocking. Developed to take advantage of Maroney's skills, it just never worked right for an O-line who's main job was to protect the QB. (Not to mention Maroney's shying like a horse at a fence every time he got the ball). IMO, no new RB help; BJGE may make the roster, howver.

P.S. IMO, Maroney is damaged goods. He's never been the same since the beat-down Bob Sanders gave him 2 yrs ago. If he doesn't demonstrate he can attack the hole in the first 3 games this yr., he should be cut.

I wonder how Ben Watson would look in that role?

I'm just curious...

He's too tall and skinny, IMO. He's going to return to being a receiving threat this year, as well. I'm interested to see how he and Chris Baker operate in the 2 TE sets.

Didn't I hear somewhere not long ago that Evans said he loves it in New England and wants to retire a Patriot and was willing to wait until they got their bigger business squared away before they renegotaited with him?

I wonder what happened?

Vrabel & Evans were two great "locker room guys" that really understood the Patriot way!

Best wishes to both, but I we will miss them.

My guess is he got offered more $$$ and an expanded role, and in the NFL it's important, especially for the smaller-role guys, to take the cash when they can get it.

The Giants back is 6'5. He isn't too bad. Ben isn't skinny. He has muscle.

Ben could be a hybrid guy.

He isn't that successful at TE... if only for a few plays a game, it would be a change of pace.

I don't think it is out of the question.

Really? Are you drinking the mythical hate water again, or can you back this up?

Hey noob, is he a huge playmaker for the Pats?

Yes or no.

A first round pick is supposed to be much better than that.

How much better? (since we're having an all-questions no-balls conversation)

It would be an interesting experiment is all I'm saying noob.

He isn't exactly lighting up the stat board.

He can block a little.

He can catch a little.

Maybe just for a few plays here and there, why not?

I dunno.

He does have the talent... I just wish he could be utilized in different situations.

Heck, BB used Vrable as a change of pace in goal line plays.

I'm not sure why you're suddenly calling me noob, but if makes your **** seem bigger, have at it.

Watson has one rushing stat, coming in 2007 against the Browns for 11 yards. He also caught two TD's in that game.

I think his blocking has improved a great deal and his TD receptions in 2007 were third on the team, about right for a TE, imo.

Just because you can make Watson a 99 OVR FB in Madden doesn't mean he can play that position in real life.

And really, calling people noob? God this place has gone downhill.

Just remember that many posters on this board remember the Patriots' pre-Welker TE-heavy offense.

Yeah I can't see him at FB but hey BB is full of surprises :singing:, hey its only a matter of time before "noob" turns into "nub" :violent:

And you know that he can't how?

I don't play Madden fwiw...

It's a long offseason.

Ben Watson is more versatile than just TE.

That was my whole point.

Maybe he could actually succeed at it.
