ESPN's John Clayton reports that the Patriots will make extending NT Vince Wilfork a priority with their new found salary cap space.

Great news for us.

now we can scratch the DT position off the list of potential 2nd round pick choices...I think...

Re: Good News -Pats working to extend Wilfork

Good news..

But I think we should still take a look in the 2nd day of the draft looking for a backup NT. someone to groom to eventually rotate with Wilfork as he gets older..

Re: Good News -Pats working to extend Wilfork

Extending Wilfork should be the single most important item on the Patriots agenda. I take a defense filled with rookies if it means keeping Wilfork around another 5 years.

Re: Good News -Pats working to extend Wilfork

oh...so wait....the Cassel/Vrabel deal nets us 18.75 mil on the cap enabling us to lock up our starting All Pro nose tackle and probably our valuable DT/DE Jarvis Green? What tragic fallout from this abomination of a trade scorned by all the Patriot Wannabe Head Coach nonny nu nu's out there..and perish forbid...THREE 2nd round picks(which as any Patriot Pseudo Head Coach Genius will tell you come around all the time) to go along with our 1st round pick, giving us the BEST FLEXIBILITY OF ANY NFL TEAM IN THIS DRAFT...this is truly devastating

Here's the issue a lot of people have, myself included. The pats allocated resources to him for years.. To everyones surprise Cassel stepped up and became a top 13 QB.. He's 26 years old and plays the most important position in the NFL.. The nfl is a QB driven league..
When you look at history, you see Culpepper, feeley and Schuab nabbed there teams 2nd round picks (Schuab brought two 2nd rounders).. Cassel is better than all 3..
The point is, the Pats had the opprotunity (per Mike Smith of ESPN, who has a great track record) to get a 1st rounder and maybe more.. Even Curran said he is baffled..
We know the money is coming off the cap.. That is not the issue.. that is being short sighted.. The problem is the pats did not, ABSOLUTELY DID NOT, maximize his value..

Re: Good News -Pats working to extend Wilfork

Theory: Wilfork extension gets done before a major move for someone like Peppers. That way it's a base-point for contract talks and keeps things neat and nice between Vince and the club.

Other than Brady back; this is the news we needed to hear. Have our 2 best players back a long time.

what is the fascination with Peppers? You want to give up high drafts picks and $$$ to a guy that is 30, who has never played the position and is not great at the point of attack (against the run).. I just don't see it..

the quote from clayton and the heading of the thread are so misleading. everyone knows the patriots "will make" extending NT wilfork a priority. Doesnt mean they are working on it now and a deal is in works.

I'm not fascinated with the guy. I think the pick is more valuable.

But with so many people believing it's going this way, this is my theory.

please...you're the same obstinate stone wall that threw Cassel under the bus in August after he laid an egg in the 3rd preseason game and NOW you're all outraged and insulted that the Patriots didn't get what YOU, the obvious football overlord, considered enough...buy your own team and let's see how long YOU stay in business.

Exactly!

Remind me again... how did Atlanta turn out last year after having 3, 2nd rounders?

They were also being run by a former Pats FO guy right?:D

Atlanta got that YOUNG QB and plays in the WORSE DIVISION in FOOTBALL.. Every year for the past XXX years the team that finished in last place won the division the following year..

Re: Good News -Pats working to extend Wilfork

heh..."read Michael Smith!!!!!!!"

yeah...I did...just like I read Michael Smith after Milloy was cut...and Law...and McG...and Bledsoe...and...well...you must get the POINT by now, hoss.....you see, THAT is why Michael Smith is a SPORTSWRITER and Bill Belichick is an NFL HEAD COACH....got it, Einstein? I'll go with the NFL HEAD COACH AND OWNER OF THREE SUPER BOWLS IN NE over the unbelievably admired Michael Smith.

The NFC West has been the worst division in football for the past XXX years. The NFC South was actually the best conference in the NFL as far as W-L goes.

Re: Good News -Pats working to extend Wilfork

Clayton seems to have the knack for stating the obvious, and somehow Mr. Peepers has mucho credibility...

I hope Wilfork gets extended long term; he is key to the Patriots defense.
