The first one would cost the Pats a 2nd and I'm not sure he's been medically cleared yet by the Ravens but if he's healthy he would be a nice fit at S. Maybe we can work out a deal involving a lower pick with the Ravens.

The other two are low cost, fill a specific role type of players that I could also see fitting in nicely with the Pats. Those two are not name FAs but players I believe can make a significant contribution to the Pats without costing big $.

1.) SS Dawan Landry
6-0, 220, 26 yrs old, Exp 3 yrs, Georgia Tech

RFA who was tendered at a 2nd Rd level by the Ravens. Very productive player in his first two seasons in the league before suffering a spinal cord concussion which ended his 2008 season after only two games. Has good size and displays good instincts. He is effective near the los vs the run and has good route awareness in coverage. Solid starting SS.

2.) LB Kevin Burnett
6-3, 242, 26 yrs old, Exp 4 yrs, Tennessee

Burnett was mostly backup in Dallas who played in sub packages. He's better vs the pass than vs the run at this point in his career but he's young and with some solid NE coaching he can get better using his hands and improve vs the run. He's also an effective blitzer.

3.) DE Michael Montgomery
6-5, 275 lbs, 25 yrs old, Exp 4 yrs, Texas A&M

Rotational backup with flexibility, having played both end spots. He is a bit undersized but is a good athlete with pass rush skills. He's mostly contributed as a rusher in sub packages with the Packers. Hard worker, competititor who always plays hard. Has good natural pass rush skills because of a solid first step with speed to close. Looks like a younger version of Jarvis Green and could make him expendable resulting in a cap savings of $2.5 mil. Green struggled last year after putting together his two best seasons in 2006 and 2007. Green is 30 yrs old and could be declining.

Jarvis had a nagging ankle injury, I'm not too worried for 2009.

I like Kevin Burnett but he's kind of like Gary Guyton. We need another rock in the middle.

Yes but Guyton plays inside and Burnett outside. Could be could sub package combo.

I don't think the Pats give up a 2nd rounder for D. Landry when there are a lot of good safety prospects in round 2 of the draft or they can simply sign one of the quality free agent safeties still available. And he's coming off a spinal cord concussion??? Whoa what in the world is that injury? It sounds really bad.

Yes I posted this before we traded Cassel, now with more cap room I'd like me some Sean Jones and Darren Sharper to go with him along with Leigh Bodden.

I'm only half kidding when I say this but:

What if the Pats went out and signed Anquan Boldin? Would it matter how good the defense was? They could put up 40 pts a game and fill in the holes at defense via the draft. Obviously they won't do this but imagine Moss Boldin and Welker? I don't think there's a defense capable of stopping that.

i wouldn't touch any of those players....

Basically your giving up a Cassel for Landry.. No freaking way.. Landry is above average nothing more..

K. Burnett has a history of injuries.. Pass..

DE Michael Montgomery - we can find a player of this talent in the 2nd day of the draft..

Defense wins championships. We set the scoring record in 07 and got stuffed in the Superbowl.

For awhile we have needed a better: SS, OLB, and CB

I think a target may be Roy Williams, aka "Biscuit", the SS from Dallas. Dallas is trying to deal him, but will likely have to release him.

Williams struggles in deep coverage, but he has speed and his strengths would fit well in the hybrid LB/S role that BB used with Harrison. He brings an edge to the game much like 37 as well. He's a good example of a player needing a scheme change.

Scouting Report:
Roy Williams - Dallas Cowboys - Sportsnet.ca

No Adam Seward interest? I thought he'd be worth about 15 mil. a year by now.

What is the rule for signing RFA

What pick do you give up.

For instance the pats sign a 2nd round tendered RFA.

or 2 of them.

Which pick do they have to give up.

I think Gabe Watson NT from the Cardinals would be worth it.

Responded to good coaching. NT potential. Worth a second.

You give up your pick I believe.

And Anquan Bolden is not a free agent.

Dawan Landry was tendered at the low-level, not the second round level, by the Ravens.

His compensation would be a 6th round pick, if Baltimore declined to match an offer sheet.

Baltimore Ravens News - RAVENS SALARY CAP UPDATE

2. RESTRICTED FREE AGENT TENDERS: Aaron Wilson is reporting that it is believed that the Ravens have offered the 2nd round RFA Tenders to Punter Sam Koch, Safety Dawan Landry and WR Demetrius Williams. These Tenders carry a salary of $1.545M and allow the Ravens to match any offer sheet signed with another team or to decline to match and receive a 2nd round pick in return.

Oh wait, conflicting reports:
Carroll County Times: Westminster, Maryland

The Ravens assigned a low tender of $1.01 million to strong safety Dawan Landry

This story is more up to date so I would go with this info. Looks like he will only require a 5th as compensation. Funny, same guy Aaron Wilson is the source.

He was tendered at the lowest level. I got the release from the NFL to start FA, which lists all FA. I don't have a link, but trust me on this one.

Here is a list of all the RFA and how they were tendered (it may not come out formatted because it is cut-and-pasted from an html-formatted email):

I don't think we're even interested in Burnett.

Burnett touring California
Monday, March 02, 2009

Cowboys linebacker Kevin Burnett -- likely out of Dallas' plans after the club signed Keith Brooking over the weekend -- is starting his free-agent tour in Oakland today, and is slated to visit the San Diego Chargers next.

Burnett served as a nickel linebacker and core special teamer for the Cowboys under Wade Phillips, notching 38 tackles, two sacks and three passes defensed last season. An athletic, 242-pound 26-year-old, Burnett's never played a full-time role on defense, something he'll likely seek now.

A former second-round pick, Burnett's from Inglewood, Calif., giving him a natural connection to the two clubs he'll visit this week. He'd likely project as a "Will" linebacker in Oakland's defense, and on the inside of the Chargers' 3-4, which still bears plenty of similarities to the defense Phillips ran there as DC from 2004-06.

LB Angelo Crowell? I haven't heard much talk about him on here or in the press. Sure, he was injured all of last season, but he is only 27 and has had some very good years. He could potentially be an excellent value signing.
