Something is going down. You don't trade your starting OLB without having any replacement. Woods has not shown enough to indicate he can be a starting OLB and Crable hasn't shown anything yet. The Pats are either getting ready to trade for Peppers, or as many are speculating, Cassel will be traded to the Chiefs for the 3rd pick in the draft. I would rather have Curry or a stud lineman than Peppers. I think the Pats are finally getting it that they need to get fast on defense. Although I appreciate what Vrabel has done for the Pats, it's time to move on.
I think you may be right, actually, but Crable was a top performer as well:
NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - Shawn Crable
according to this site: WalterFootball.com: 2008 NFL Draft Scouting Combine - Outside Linebackers
His combine stats were:
Shawn Crable, Michigan
Height: 6-4. Weight: 245.
Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
Combine 40 Time: 4.64.
Benchx225: 29. Vertical .
Projected Round: 3.
Very good, all around. The key is his weight- the scouting reports say that he can get up to 260, and he's had an awful lot of time to lift a lot of weights over the last year. If he comes into camp at 260, maybe he could be a contributor for us, and provide depth at OLB, along with TBC, that made Vrabel expendable and Woods a starter. As DaBruinz pointed out, a lot of good OLBs take a few years to become a starter, and I see no reason why the same couldn't be true for Crable.
LOL - dude, tanked is a pro evaluator: he said so himself! You'd better get the hell outta dodge!
Crable has the physical talent of a 1st rounder. He's prone to making dumb mistakes, and has to put on some weight to be more effective in the league. Right now, I'd say he could step in and be an effective pass-rusher, but lacks the versatility that Vrabel had (naturally, considering his inexperience, and also because he hasn't been required to be quite so involved in the defense while in college.) If he commits himself to football (and I've heard that he has) then I see no reason for Crable not to be an impact player in the league in a year or two. Next year, his upside is that of a pass rush specialist.
I think it's his chickenlegs that worry a lot of people. The reason he couldn't contribute on ST.
Now if only we could have a linebacker with Guyton's lower body and Crable's upper body. Talk about a great player.

Since it's uncertain whether Curry will be there are #3 overall, I think a deal is in place where the Pats will move up to pick Curry at #3 if he's there, KC gets Cassel, and we swap a bunch of picks.
Mike Mayock, the best talent evaluator out there, LOVES Curry, calls him the best player in the draft and without any weaknesses.
