Pats hire Floyd Reese as Senior Football Advisor; Caserio will remain director

Don Banks just sais that Reese has known Belichick for so long (since '76) that he's one of the few people who knows him well enough to call him "Billy".

The worked together in Detroit - Bill's second pro gig after the Colts.

What this hiring says is that BB is not looking to fill a room full of "yes" men. Every good manager wants to hire people that will provide alternative viewpoints and when appropriate, question his/her decisions in a professional manner. In Reese, BB has that person who is comfortable enough to challenge and question BB's decisions or offer council. Additionally, BB is comfortable enough with Reese and obviously has a deep amount of respect for his footbal knowledge.

In terms of Reese's drafting record, IMO it's more than good. No one hits home runs 100% of the time. Caserio will work with Reese to set the board and BB will pick the players.

As far as the cap goes, there is already a system and a financial philosophy in place. With the Krafts and BB's already-established financial structure prooven to work, I don't think they will give Reese carte-blanche with their cap structure. He will work the contracts under pre-defined operating parameters.

As a whole, IMO this is an outstanding move.

I think Reese's first job won't be the draft. I think he will be the guy to work a deal for Cassel. Calling other GMs and working a deal like this will probably take a lot of time, and I think that's a little out of Caserio's wheelhouse at this point in his career.

True. Caserio will also be pre-occupied with filling the slots in the draft board along with Ernie Adams. Like some others, I'm concerned about the Titan's stint in cap hell, but while Reese may have pulled the trigger in those deals, ownership may have had a voice. Another role Reese may play might be wing-man for Jonathan Kraft in upcoming negotiations over CBA concerns in 2010. He does have stature in the league and contacts that may enhance the Kraft's sphere of influence.

Will he be providing input on the draft? He seems to have a good track record in that area? Still, judging from his resume, this appears to be a very good pickup for the Patriots organization.

I like the hire, wasn't this Bucko Kilroy's old position?

In addition to the Cassel situation, one of Reese's duties may be

to negotiate new contracts for some of their potential free agents.
