Ok, to tie this into present/former Patriots and prevent it from getting moved....

1.) John Gruden for Patriots O.C.?

2.) John Gruden for Chiefs H.C.?

I forgot that the Chiefs could be a possibility. I wonder if Gruden and Pioli could work together?

As for Gruden becoming the Pats O.C. I think he'd be behind Shanahan in all honesty, but ahead of Martz....

I dunno bout bringing him in as out oc, I hope the pats stay in house, I dont want the systed to change too much.

Stupid move at a stupid time. I wonder if they have somebody in mind. Wouldn't surprise me to see Gruden land another job right away.

iam sure something has been planned since allen is also gone i think. maybe they checked with shanahan and cowher and decided one of them was available.

Only the timing is surprising.

The resume looks very much like a guy who was on the hot seat:

-2 playoffs in the last 6 years
-hasn't won a playoff game since his first year in Tampa Bay
-last 3 seasons are 4-12, 9-7, and 9-7
-collapsed with 4 straight losses down the stretch

maybe gruden to jets with favre

That is a very surprising move. Now that leaves two Super Bowl winning coaches in the NFL Bill B and Tom C. This has the looks of a crazy offseason.

I guess the Bucs loss, to the Raiders, at home, with the playoffs at stake was the last straw, did him in...The Glazers must have a short fuse, or Chuckie has been pissing'em off. Always respected him as a coach.

Like Shanahan, Gruden is one of the better coaches. The window for winning is small it seems.

Well, I think Gruden is a pretty good head coach, but he does tend to butt heads with the brass, and I think that the one thing Pioli is not going to want to put up with in year one is going to be a coach who thinks he's got the pull to be giving Pioli any grief.

Having said that, I think Pioli could do a lot worse than Gruden. You know, like keeping Herm....

Florio is speculating that Shanahan is a likely target - given the firing of the GM that seems very possible. His offence is a west coast system so there would be no huge change.

I don't rate Gruden very highly. He won with Dungy's players and rode Kiffen's defence for the last few years. He never developed a QB or a consistent offence. He'll want a HC job or at least a senior OC like the Cowboys (if Garret leaves). The Jets are a strong possibility - he has the personality for NY.

In a weird way all this craziness makes Herm Edwards safer. There have been so many coaches and assistents hired that if the Chiefs fire him, they will have a shallow pool to choose from that the new coach will have trouble getting assistents when he takes the job in February.

Broncos: Start season 8-5 (3 game lead, with 3 to go)
End Result: Miss playoffs (0-3 final 3 games)

Buccaneers: Start season 9-3
End Result: Miss playoffs (0-4 final four games)

Gruden has 0 playoff wins in last 6 years.

Is it really necessary for NFL-N/ESPN/Boards to mourn as if these have been some unthinkable moves?

No playoff wins in last 6 years is worthy of the boot, regardless of your name value/past success.

And, speaking of Chiefsplanet, there's a thread about Pioli being rumored to be talking with Shanahan....

For the NFL, it is already a very interesting offseason, and it's not even the offseason yet.

Both have a combined 0 playoff wins in last 6 years.

I think we see that neither Gruden nor Shanahan should have final say over personnel.

You people are nuts, yes Gruden has a ring, from a Tony Dungy made team, Gruden has been living off 2002 and has done nothing since then including this year going from 9-3 to 9-7, losing the last 4 and in Week 17 all he had to do was beat the JV Raiders to make the playoffs. A well deserved firing and it's about time.

Lets recap Grudens team since 2002.
2003 - 7-9 3rd place in division
2004 - 5-11 last place in division
2005 - 11-5 lost in 1st round of playoffs
2006 - 4-12 last place in division
2007 - 9-7 lost in 1st round of playoffs
2008 - 9-7 lost last 4 games no playoffs

Grudens failure to draft a future star QB and manage the salary cap has doomed this franchise for years to come. Gruden as a Patriot OC? NO FRIGGIN WAY!

i bet tannebaum makes a play for him to bring back favre also to sell more PSL's

I'm not a big Gruden guy, but he is certainly a solid NFL caliber coach. I think that you can't allow him to play musical QB's and he has a chance to succeed.

There are some very successful coaches available: Shanahan, Billick and Gruden have all won SB's.

Gruden's whole collecting QB's thing, often characterized as "cute" by the media was just ridiculous.

Exactly.

Gruden inherited Tony Dungy's team and rode Kiffin's defense. With the remnants of that Super Bowl defense getting older or gone already, no offensive structure, and a disappointing collapse ended by getting eliminated by the Raiders at home to end the season, it was time for Gruden to go.
