On rotoworld it states that KC offered Pioli the GM job....please correct me if Im wrong, but isnt a GM lower on the totem pole than VP of football operations??

If it is a demotion, why would KC even bother?

It wouldn't be a demotion. Teams can give their employees whatever titles they want, the Patriots could call him the Supreme Allied Commander, but he still doesn't have complete front-office authority in New England, Belichick does. In KC he might.

Re: Isnt KCs offer to Pioli a demotion?? (if true)

titles are all semantics.

what's important is whether or not Pioli has final say on personnel and if he can hire and fire the coaching staff.

currently Belichick has final say and control of the coaching staff.

So any additional power pioli would get in KC is considered a promotion, regardless of titles.

That would be a cool title to have!

football post of the year. Accurate, to the point, and hilarious. :D
Thank you!

Ike called, he wants his title back!!

The only question is do the Patriots ask for compensation. Now lets see the Chiefs sent a 3rd rounder to the Jets for Herm Edwards, which if you scaled that to actual football knowledge, then the Cheifs will have to send the next five entire drafts to the Patrioits...

They aren't entitled to compensation if its an increase in position. The issue with Herm was that it was a lateral move. If Pioli gets final say, its a move up, and theres nothing the Pats can do.

I don't know if a GM is higher or lower that VP of Football Operations, but if it is, so what? Pioli isn't VP of Football Operations.

Not sure if we are able to be compensated? Wasn't Edwards just a lateral move, in that he had the same title and responsibilities. If it is a promotion for the individual, then we wouldn't be eligible for compensation.

There are specific criteria the NFL has for what roles are what. Pioli doesn't have final say in NE. If he does in KC, it'll be a promotion, atleast to the NFL.

Re: Isnt KCs offer to Pioli a demotion?? (if true)

In football the GM only reports to the President (sometimes he is the president too though) and the owner. Everyone else is below him. It would be a promotion at least in title and stated responsibilities over his current position.

We already know he won't handle business aspects. Owner Hunt said so. Football Ops are separate from Business Ops.

Right, that's what front-office means in regards to a team.

so how are we so sure here that Pioli doesnt have final say here? and that BB does?

i always thought it was a sort of a 50/50 thing...

I've always understood that Belichick has final say over football matters, though I could obviously be wrong. Goodell, in doling out his brand of justice for Spygate, said that he fined the team because "coach Belichick not only serves as the head coach but also has substantial control over all aspects of New England's football operations. His actions and decisions are properly attributed to the club." Again, I could be wrong, but I think that Belichick could terminate Pioli's employment, but I doubt Pioli could terminate Belichick's.

thats a roundabout way of saying that Pioli reports to Belichick....

If there's one thing I'm good at, it's being roundabout.

50/50 - They both report to Johnathan and Bob - Bill can't fire Scott without the Kraft's approval and then it would actually be them firing Scott and not Bill.

man, i thought it was understood by everyone in the galaxy that Bill Belichick is in charge of football operations here and that Scott Pioli works under him to find and evaluate talent. This certainly qualifies Pioli, based on his performance, to be promoted someplace to be the Belichick ( without the coaching part) of that organization.

Wow, do you actually know this to be true, or is it something you infer from reading/listening to local sports sports media? Not saying it doesn't make sense - it does - but how do you people learn stuff like this about the Pats inner workings?
