Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

It's clear that it's different this time - not that he'll definitely leave but that he's definitely interested for the first time. We knew this day would come and we know the day will come that he'll actually leave. Maybe today is that day, maybe next week or next year. Why now ? Who knows but the time comes for everyone to try something different.

Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

Pioli deserves an opportunity to show on the national stage his talent which is often overshadowed by the larger than life BB... pretty confident that BB has a plan in place already if he leaves and things will go on as usual.

Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

Pioli better be careful....He takes one of these jobs, hires Josh Mc to coach, they go 6-10, 7-9, 8-8, 4-12, then they get fired and he never gets another job.....

Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

When I saw the title...some signs...I thought MAYBE there would be some...but just because it's a first interview doesn't mean ALL that much... I agree..he may move on...but SIGNs? Reading tea leaves...Lofic would say it HAS been tme..but I was expecting something less obvious..REAL signs..

He pretty much is on the national stage now and has been for the last couple of years. If he leaves he would risk failure with another team and that would diminish his credibility.
But I guess life is full of risks and he may go with one of these offers.:(

Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

OTHER "signs" point out the obvious.....per Rick Ferentz quoted in a Pioli article from NFP.

"We're good friends. I've got tremendous respect for Scott as a football guy. He's just a tremendous person. I caution everybody: don't try to predict what Scott is going to do either. He's got a great job right where he's at."

Also this little interesting tidbit

"As the Browns drama unfolds, Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro has watched from afar. Shapiro has a vested personal interest in Lerner's searches. He is good friends with Pioli. Mangini is his brother-in-law."

Biggest thing with Pioli will be the owner. I've heard him talk a lot and by all indications he's very very comfortable with Kraft and BB. He may aspire to "run the show" somewhere but he's not going to give up what he has now to work for a nonsupportive or meddling owner.

I agree. Absolutely nothing new there.

Since they demanded an answer yesrterday and i haven't seen anything, he must have turned them down, right?

Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

He may just be looking for an offer so he can get a raise.

BK: Hey Scott, how did your interview with the Browns go yesterday.
SP: Went great, they offered me the job, the coach reports to me and half a million more than I make here.
BK: Did you take it?
SP: I told them I would think about. Bob, I really like working for the Pats and I don't care one way or the other about the coach reporting to me, but half a million bucks is some serious coin.
BK: So if I give you a raise you stay, if not you leave?
SP: Something like that.

Except Coach Belichick who we hope is going to do a "Paterno" here.:cool3:

Agree..... This article is a rehash of stuff everyone already knows. There are no "new signs". In fact, the more I see as the "Pioli to Cleveland" rumor train get's cranked, the less I think it'll come to fruition.

3 big signs against.
  1. Decide by today - When you are dealing with the "clear and away" top GM candidate, this is likely to backfire on Lerner. It would send a huge red flag up to me if a prospective employer wanted my "substantial skills"
  2. Talk of a Mangini- Some already says he interviewed on Tuesday. First, I'd be surprised if the two would find a good chemistry together (given the crap of the last 2 years), but more importantly, if I'm a top candidate for a job where I'd expect (and demand) more football control, and I heard the guy looking to hire me was already out doing what is, in effect, my first important task (i.e. hiring a HC), I'd be real skittish. My "meddling owner" bells would be seriously ringing.
  3. Ferentz already put to rest - To say that his comment were hesitant at best in regards to his comments is understating it. He almost seemed to pooh pooh the idea publicly". If I thought there was a possibility it was gonna happen, why say anything at all. Even if I didn't want the job, he likely just publicly keep his mouth closed and let everything take it's due course.

Again, not saying he's not leaving, but the whole Cleveland this is looking bizarre and the more it plays in public, the worse it gets. Pioli doesn't seem like a "in public" type of Guy.

I actaully worry about DENVER more at this point.

The biggest sign is that SMY is writing about it.

She and Reiss are the two most credible writers on the Pats beat.

It may or may not happen, but if Manza-Young is putting it in print, then Pioli must at least be considering it.

Old friend Wrong also says his demands are so high as to suggest that he really doesn't want to leave the Patriots.

If I were in as much demand as he, I would push the envelope as far as it would go and if someone met my outrageous demands, then I would seriously consider it. The Browns look less and less like a place he should go what with their hourly announcements of what coach and what GM they are interviewing. Shouldn't they leave the coach hire to the new gm? especially if he is going to be as great and powerful as Lerner suggests?

In fact, is that my phone ringing...?

He could make $1 million in New England for the next 15 years.

Or $1.5 million in Cleveland for the next 5.

Hmmm, let's add things up here.

Granted that a Borges article, so it likely to be 10% fact (or less). The one thing that is intriguing besides the typical "give me an answer today" (which for the life of me I don't get), is the storyline that Pioli countered with near impossible demands to meet and the immediate scheduling of "the next guy on the list" (McKay).

If that's true, then Pioli is just "setting the table" for something else.

Lerner is either 1) a complete moron to make huge pitch at a guy saying "you're the one we want bad", while at the same time scheduling an interview with someone else. Nothing is that much of a hurry. or 2) He doesn't think he has much of a shot.

Except that even BB says he doesn't see himself coaching that much longer. I do expect him to be around at least another five years, though. :)

Re: SM Young:Some signs pointing to Pats executive vice president Pioli moving on

Is this really news at this point? Isn't this article about three days too late? (Not too late, SMY, I just think the tenor of the article, or at least the thread, implies some BREAKING STORY quality that doesn't fit with the information that's been out there for at least 72 hours.)

It's tough to consider him too obscure: Pioli has won the NFL Executive of the Year award twice. He does receive real national recognition with the Patriots.

It would have to be a better situation than the Patriots for him. I hope he opts to stay.

Thats why it would not surprise me if the the reason he is doing the interview is so he can go back to Bob Kraft and say, hey make the decision easier for me.
