I just saw on Patriots today the the record for most TD passes from a first year starter (on the Patriots) is 23. Cass has 21.

That would be another cool stat for the record tracker if it goes down.

Here is one record I feel confident will fall....most Bostonians to ever root for the Jets on single day.

The number of New Englanders should easily dwarf the number of Bostonians. :D

Then you should post it in "the" thread.

Is this an NE record or an NFL record?

Could we offer support for the Jets by proxy? Perhaps feature Gunnails and the other Jets fans on the site in a show of support for all they care about, without actually stating the team name? It is vexing to the soul to actually cheer for Mangini's team directly.

I figure the Jets have burned me 6 of 6 times (picking for and against them) this year in the football pool, so my contribution will be to pick Miami to win and put the maximum point value allowed on that game. That virtually guarantees the Jets will show up to hose me over.

speaking of which where is gunnails? You would think he would show up the one week in which he would actually get a warm welcome.

It's a team record. 23 being set in 1984.

It's an NFL record. 23 being set in 1984.

Warner thru 41 passes his first year as a starter.

You sure that isn't the record for most TD by someone who didn't start the first game of the season.

That sounds more plausible.

Dunno. That's all the info they give. Hit the pats website and watch the vid, it's near the end.

Found details. Franchise record, they failed to mention that in the video.

Game Notes : Chris Price - New England Patriots Blog

CASSEL THROWS 19th, 20th and 21st TOUCHDOWN PASSES OF SEASON
Matt Cassel threw three touchdown passes - a 15-yard toss to Kevin Faulk in the second quarter, an 11-yard scoring strike to Wes Welker in the second quarter and a 76-yard screen pass to Randy Moss in the third quarter - bringing his season total to 21 touchdown passes. Cassel’s 21 touchdown passes are the most for a Patriots quarterback in his first year as a starter since Tony Eason had 23 scoring passes while starting 13 games in 1984. Cassel is the seventh quarterback in Patriots history to have 20 or more touchdown passes in a season, joining Tom Brady (6), Drew Bledsoe (4), Babe Parilli (2), Steve Grogan (1), Tony Eason (1) and Butch Songin (1) as the only Patriots passers to achieve the feat.
PATRIOTS RECORD BOOK / MOST TD PASSES BY A QB IN FIRST YEAR AS STARTER
Code:
Player Year TD GS
Tony Eason 1984 23 13
Butch Songin 1960 22 12
Matt Cassel 2008 21 14
Jim Plunkett 1971 19 14
Mike Taliaferro 1969 19 14
Tom Brady 2001 18 14
Steve Grogan 1976 18 14
Drew Bledsoe 1993 15 12
NOTE: Ranks the most touchdown passes by Patriots quarterbacks when making 10 or more starts for the first time in their career.

I will, with feeling too..... but I seriously hope I can keep anything in my stomach at the time from coming back up. That will be the true test.

I looked at the stats to confirm the prior record holder's body of work and in support of my mentioning that I don't know if it is a good thing mentioning Cassel's name in the same breath as the prior record holder, Tony Eason (most fans recall his "not in the face" response to the Bears in the Super Bowl in 1985, confirming John Hannah's contempt for him as soft).

Eason started 4 games in 1983 (Grogan had some injury issues at that point in his career, as such 1984 was not Eason's first year as starting QB), so I'm not sure what the record actually represents. And to Eason's credit (I need to do so for one of his two good seasons), he threw 23 TDs in 13 games.

Hoodie's theory sounds plausible as Grogan started the first game in 1984 and may actually have been number 1 on the depth chart then (not sure on the depth chart).

I thought that Eason started as 2, 'cause he sucked. Grogan (who the team wanted from the start) then got hurt, and Eason came back in for the play-off run. Grogan was healthy enough to replace Bambi in the Super Bowl, though.

If he throws or runs in about 6 TD's against Buffalo, he may tie Peyton for #1 in TD's in the league, or be assured finishing in second--as he's currently in second place right now!

Matt will Toss Six TD passes Sunday bet on it!

Any record that Cassel can break to make him more attractive in a trade is fine with me.

Word has it that he was commited facility in Upstate New York following the Seattle game.

Sadly, there is no cable there and he wont be watching much of anything except for the endless loop of "it's a wonderful life".
