So says Eric Casillias (sp) on ESPN today covering for cowherd.....In his opinion, everyone has been talking about how Pennington got snubbed in favor of Brett Favre. BUT....he says, what about Matt Cassel? Here he comes off the bench......everyone expects him to tank.....and he comes out and plays admirably and overall effectively.........18 TD's (cant recall the picks) and played with tremendous fire, and guts....and increasing poise.

I WAS NOT a big Cassel fan as everyone knows, but I have been impressed by his fire and guts in there.....and he has managed the offense admirably. DO I think, however, that he is a PRO BOWL calibre quarterback? No...I don't....unless the follow up question is...who should go to the pro bowl after their PERFORMANCE this year......Favre.....Cassel....or Penny? Based on past experience......everyone's expectations.....pressure from the douche bag media??????? Cassel wins HANDS DOWN!!!!........

Anyways......he went on to talk about how the Pats will have to look LONG and hard at whether to trade Brady for top draft picks......and keep Cassel.....his argument is that Brady may not be back in time for start of season....and who knows what he will be able to do, or IF he can come back and play like the "old" Tom. I can appreciate that argument.
However, you have seen that Cassel can lead this team (says Cassilias), he is younger than Tom and you could get him cheaper. He said that obviously the Pats can not afford to keep both and that they would NOT franchise Cassel.

I don't buy that the Pats would ever sever ties with Brady......He is a legend and should retire a Patriot!!!!....what do you think?

Okay maybe Pennington is equal to Cassel but Rivers clearly had a better year than Cassel and Pennington.

Based on what for Rivers?

Stats?

He had a very Ken O'Brien-esque year.

I've watched Rivers. He has played badly early in games, gotten behind by a lot, and then slung the ball around the field like crazy. He's putting up the gawdy numbers that Jeff George used to put up.

This may be the overstatement of the year. Honestly, I really didn't follow it or even have the slightest bit of interest to keep track of it. Even a little. Everyone? Please.

You mean UNDERstatement?

Rivers, Cutler, Manning is fair.

Favre is not.

Pennington has an argument as did Cutler and Rivers and of course, even though he's not performing up to par, Peyton Manning is going to be voted in.
The one name that doesn't belong there is Favre.
The Jets are doing well in spite of him not because of him.IMO.
While Matt is just playing smart efficient football whose stat numbers have
increased as his familiarity and experience has increased.
Yeah, Matt was snubbed.

Thank you discov

Favre is not.

What other QB put up these types of stats this year:

305 for 451
3052 yards
21 TD
17 Ints
3 crying fits on TV
75,347 articles on if he was going to retire
21,987 blog entries on giving competitive information to the Lions
324 ESPN breaking alerts on progress in training camp

If Favre is not worthy of going to an event in which voting is base primarily on name regonition, I don't know who is.

The real shocker is the snub to TO the only person that can compete with Brett for being a media hog.

I usually don't care about these things, but I'd love to see somebody drop out and have Cassell go. Who knows where his career will lead? There's no doubt in my mind his performance coming off the bench was heroic and I'd love to see him get that type of recognition.

Maybe Brett will break his arm patting himself on the back. Not that I'd want that.

IMO, the mere thought of trading Brady is at best...STUPID! Cassel has played as well as anyone could've have asked and deserves a contract and a starting job somewhere, but no one except for a handful of people knows the true status of Brady's knee (I believe he'll be ready) and to say that Cassel could be cheaper and is younger.... so trade Brady? WTF are they smoking.

BF hasn't gone in year. But Matt is not next in line.

A pro bowl selection isn't about "who performed above their expectations"; its "who is the top (in case of QBs 3) at their position.

Cassel is not a top 3 AFC QB.

It's not only the media that blows hot and cold.

They remember the Patriots trading Drew Bledsoe within the division for a first-round draft pick after the 2001 season.

I'm not saying this IS an equivalent situation, merely that they see it as one.

No, I mean overstatement. Meaning the "everyone knows" part. I neither knew nor cared about his opinion on Matt Cassel. Delusions of grandeur I guess.

I was under the impression that Cutler WAS a pro bowl backup selection.....will have to check on this one.......thx

Probably just some fodder to gain ratings for ESPN.....but If it was NOT Tom Brady that they were talking about.....I could see trading a guy with that much value for TOP 1st round draft picks.........But, we are talking about Tom Brady here. Greatest QB of all time. Still in his prime. If ANYONE can f'ing come back from this kind of surgery......BRADY WILL DO IT and then some........Keep those first round picks.......I'll stick with Brady.......hopefully the Pats can get something for Cassel.......

I just meant that they had good reasons to be there and Cassel's case was just as good. Cut me some slack.:)

Cassel's not getting snubbed. Pennington is getting snubbed.

Cassel does not have the numbers to be worthy of a pro bowl selection

Neither does Brett Favre but .....
