Notre Dame's Zbikowski knocks out opponent in 49 seconds
BY MICHAEL HIRSLEY
Chicago Tribune

NEW YORK - Notre Dame football safety Tommy Zbikowski's first step into professional boxing ended in success Saturday night on the glitzy stage of Madison Square Garden.

He knocked out Robert Bell at 49 seconds of the first round before a crowd of 14,369, including a hearty contingent of Fighting Irish fans, in the 15,000 capacity arena.

Zbikowski first knocked him down with a flurry, and when Bell got up, Zbikowski ran across the ring and hit him with a right hand. Bell spun around and referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stopped the bout.

The matchup of Zbikowski against Bell, an Ohioan and Ohio State football fan, was only one in an abundance of cultural clashes on Saturday's Garden card.

That fight was a complete sham against a tomato can of a fighter who should never have been in the ring. A publicity stunt and nothing more.

Apparently so. BTW, I still want to draft that kid to play SS for us.

as you may know, I am an anti-zbikowskite. I have a feeling we will be having this discussion in the future...:)

I've watched him blow so many coverages and miss key tackles, I am terrified of him in the Pats D-backfield, despite his flair for the dramatic. But maybe this season will be different... Take OT in the MSU game, or regulation for that matter. The ND D-backfield was torched, and it wasn't all coaching. Sloppy tackling bad fundamentals all around, with a few spectacular INT returns that peppered highlight reels and elevated his profile. Unless Z shows more consistency in the little things I doubt the Pats will look at him early in the draft. As much as I like a football player who seems to enjoy organized violence as much as Z, I wonder if his off-field boxing is an attraction or a concern for the Pats, who seem to treasure prospects focused entirely on football and not on sham careers, however entertaining...

wow, i don't think you could be more wrong about a player. He is a terrific SS and often had to make up for the horrible CB play of the Irish. He is a tough player who is always around the ball making plays and he will be a high round draft pick when he comes out.

I wouldn't mind seeing Zbikowski in a Pats uniform, He played great at SS for Notre Dame and also was a huge threat returning punts. Anyone have any guess to where he would go in the draft next year as of now? I wouldn't mind giving up a early pick for him, I think we need to start looking at safety anyway because Rodney is getting older.

Here are two videos of him returning punts for TD's that I found by the way.

BBoxer,
Maybe that was a bit strong, but I believe I'm open mided and I'll watch him closely this year with a clean slate. If I'm wrong I'm wrong.:)
