Rough time to be a Pats fan in Southern Ontario

Maybe things have changed since I grew up there. Before, there were lots of Pats fans, mainly because of Torontonian's natural contempt for all things Barfallo, and because of their continual failure to sell out (even in the OJ days), so we'd get the Patriot game on the local NBC feed.

But I guess there was no reason to hate the Pats back in the day, other than '76 they weren't much of a threat.

I think it'd be a rough time living in Canada. Period.

USA, *****es!

The contents of this post were deleted as they proved definitively that, military power aside, Canada pwns the USA.

Well they do have a "Conservative" government... rather than the disgrace we're looking at for the next four years.

Obviously, you're confused. We're getting rid of the disgrace. Try to keep up.

Anyways... More hater stories? Turns out I might get to go to the game. Better iron my pats toque, LOL.

Well good for you. They got Internet access in the compound. ;)

I'm an Ontario Pats fan, but not so much southern: Ottawa. There's a pretty diverse fan base here, it keeps things fairly interesting. Lots of bandwagon Pats fans, some hardcores from all over the league.

The day after the Super Bowl last year I went to the beer store to return some empties also wearing my Pats toque and the guy ahead of me in line was being pretty rough on the cashier... when I got up there I commented on the guy being a douche and the cashier just goes "yeah, you'd think he was a Patriots fan or something...". That was pretty bad considering she had just been yelled at and I was being sympathetic.

It also means I've been to as many away games as home. I went to Broncos/Jets last Sunday with a couple of good friends who love those respective teams and felt sick cheering the Broncos. When Ty Law was introduced on the field I booed as loud as I could.

Hey, I wouldn't go that far. My wife and her family are from Alberta, we go there at least once a year. It is awesome and the people are great. Now if you are talking about the GTA, yeah they/that sucks.

Being a Pats fan in Toronto is great.

Everyone is jealous...and we are guaranteed to witness the Pats lay an annual ass-beating on the Bills in our "home stadium" - Ralph Wilson.

I'm so happy that I'm a Pats fan...it more than makes up for the disappointment I suffer as a Leafs/Raptors/Jays fan.

'09 will be a good year for the Jays. Bank on it.

I've been thinking of trying to chase down tickets for the Dec. 28th game.

LOL - I was thinking of Matt Light when they played "Keep on Blockin' in the Free World".

That's "Rockin" in the Free World, not "Blockin". Dear Lord, I hope you weren't singing along out loud.

Dude... is wordplay illegal in your homeland? ;)

Most Canadians know the lyrics to that song better than the National anthem...

So there I was, minding my own business when I get a last minute request to take someone to a Neil Young concert Thursday night. I pulled on my Pats toque (yep, it's true) and off we went. As an aside, I'm not a Neil Young fan, but the show was excellent, and I quite enjoyed Wilco and Everest.

The concert was at the Air Canada Centre (an amazing hockey arena) which is literally two blocks from the CN Tower and Sky Dome (I know it's called the Roger's Centre, but no one here calls it that). We were early and the band hadn't dropped our passes off at the will call yet, so we decided to walk to the Dome and grab a cup of Joe.

Well, it turns out people are very excited about the AFC East clash here, and those people are not fans of the New England Patriots. I managed to end up in numerous exchanges about the how the Pats are toast this year and how the Dolphins and Jets (barf) are coming after the division, blah blah blah.

I think these games are setting up a new Franchise here. The Bills COULD move here, but I hope they don't.

Eventually I found some Patriots fans, but they were all traveling with or in the bands. Ontario loves NFL football, but they DO NOT love the Patriots and after a couple of nasty remarks from total strangers in the heart of Toronto, I think making a playoff run would force me to trade in my toque for a flak jacket. And let me say, this isn't the USA, this kind of thing is not very common (though people do get pretty worked up about hockey, for some reason...).

Watch for a Pats/Bills clash in TO in 2010. I'm already excited.

Any other Patriots fans in the area running across the hype and hostility this game is bringing to us?

For years, the Green Bay Packers played a couple of games per year in Milwaukee and not at Lambeau. I see no reason why the Bills can't do the same equivalent...:D

I have always respected the Bills franchise and their players. The team psyche isi just like the Steelers and Pats; rough, tough, Defensive minded and Team players...

cut him some slack, he's from New Hampshire :D

It is pretty funny that he thought you were serious about the lyrics.lol.

Keep on wearing that Pats garb JSN....

Yeah about T.O. that is one place I would not care to live. I hope the Bills don't move to T.O. Buffalo loves their football and I like to see the small market fan base so loyal to their team. Under these circumstances i would not want Toronto to get a team.

However I do think that an NFL franchise in Toronto would be good for the league. As countries we are different but the same. Maybe Americans want to keep it an exclusive league, I don't know. I know that even without a Canadian team in the NFL, up here we follow the NFL quite a bit, much more so that when I was younger and fans wear all different types of teams and people will poke fun at them, but not real hostile or anything.

btw I have never called it a toque, in the maritimes we call it a stocking hat (which I have three of, one a Pats hat I wear all the time of course...:))

I feel the same way about a Toronto Franchise. The only upside to the Bills moving would be that we'd get an annual Pats game (if the divisions stayed the same). Obviously some team would have to fold first for a new franchise to come along, unless we added at least two teams to the league.

With the economy really thrashing Detroit, maybe they'll sell their team.

I'm hoping to be on the east coast this summer for a film shoot and to cacth training camp. I also can't wait to get back to Halifax for a visit. Been a long time. How long is the drive from Halifax to Boston?

I lived and worked in Boston (well Brighton actually) for four years, '99-'02 and used to drive home from time to time. It always took me about 10-11 hours or so, cutting across NB onto Route 9 in Maine. Not too bad a drive...

Sadly, that's almost identical to driving there from here. Dagnabbit, I'll have to get my chopper license. hehe
