Patriots 29th highest payroll in league?

Bob Ryan made an offhand remark in a column a few weeks back about this. Is this claim correct? It sems wierd to me the Pats payroll would be that low....

It probably depends on what number you're looking at. The Patriots almost invariably spend right up to the cap; I think one year they came within $1 (without going over, of course ).

I think he's looking at the actual cash outlays for 2008, rather than the salary cap figures, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

I think the Pats like to frontload their deals with big signing bonuses since they are more cap friendly. This would lead to the "salaried" portion being significantly smaller than if they did all salary and little signing bonus.

so what ?? where the @@#$%$ was this information when we went 16-0 and before brady got hurt. ? i hate this !@@@@$#$ crap writers come up with when teams lose a game ..

Bob Ryan is talking out his arse.. What he's talking about is strictly SALARY. It ignores all the bonuses players get and could earn.

Salary doesn't much if you don't factor in the bonuses that the team paid players.

The Pats can and do use their salary cap money. Every year.

I can't find the link, but I believe the Pats were well under the cap this year.

Bob Ryan has grown to hate the Pats for some reason. I wouldn't trust him anything football related. Strike that, I wouldn't trust him anything sports-related. He doesn't know shyt about basketball anymore and made a fool of himself w/ a lot of the things he wrote about the C's last year. He could've just come out and said "I don't watch the NBA anymore, but let me pretend like I do and continue to talk about the C's", would've saved a lot of trouble. He's lucky he still has a job given he has little to no value anymore.

I thought I read a post about this last week. Probably from Miguel or someone else highly informed, but I think it said our payroll is probably going to jump quite a bit after bonuses

I remember posting about this a month or two ago. The stat has to do with cash outlay, not cap hit. It's next to meaningless as a relevant stat since cash outlay can very tremendously from year to year depending on how many deals you make/restructure.

The only truly relevant stat is the amount you are under the cap the previous year(s); the Patriots have always spent over 99% of their cap space.

If you look at salaries as a pure cash transaction, ignoring cap accounting, this makes perfect sense.

The Pats paid no big free agency signing bonuses - no big free agent retention, like Asante Samuel, no new free agent, like Adalius Thomas, no extension, like Richard Seymour or Tom Brady.

Next year, they may have the highest cash salary if they extend Wilfork and sign a corner.

That's very similar to saying I made thousands of dollars last week when I got my paycheck, but today I am working for free. If you ignore accounting rules, you get irrational results.

DB.....I think it DOES include bonuses........which is why the pats are '29th'.....they were near the bottom in FA signings last offseason, so that would make sense.........

it would be interesting to see the per-team breakdowns of salary and guaranteed money and when the guarantees have been paid out........

Your right, Jonathan Kraft was on the radio trying to explain to the feeble minded Felger thats its more complicated than what he thought and they spend right to the cap. Bob Ryan isnt any smarter than Felger so I doubt he understands it either.

Even though injuries can't be an excuse, you have to put into account that this team has had alot of them.

Otherwise, if the Pats were decently healthy, there would be NO talk on "Why is Bob Kraft so cheap" OR "Why did we let Asante walk?" OR "Why is the playcalling so bad?", "Why is Deltha O'Neal so bad?", etc, etc. I mean no calling out the players, coaches, front office people...injuries, injuries, injuries can really derail a team, but en yet, it gets WAY overlooked.

With that being said-you guys are 7-5, have an excellent shot at the playoffs still, and the final sprint is coming up.

Just keep your heads up-your coaching staff is excellent and you also have alot of locker room leaders to help you pull through this storm.
