It's been almost impossible to beat the Pats at home in a long time but I think the Rams can be competitive. The key will be whether Steven Jackson can play at a high level and take most of the snaps. He hurt a quad in the game against the Cowboys and the Rams have been pretty secretive about the extent of the injury. The Rams have nobody behind him.

The Rams were every bit as bad as their record in their first three losses to the Giants, Eagles and Seahawks. Jackson had held out all training camp and wasn't ready to go. Alex Barron was the only lineman who played much for them last year and the group had coordination problems. Orlando Pace was still bothered by a shoulder injury and had to sit out last week with a quad injury (there seems to be an outbreak of quad injuries around the league). Jacob Bell has played injured, Mark Setterstrom and Randy McMichael are out for the season. However, the Rams have simplified schemes and gotten decent work from the new group of Goldberg, Bell, Leckey, Incognito and Barron. Incognito has played like a beast this year but he is one of the dirtiest players I have ever seen.

The Rams receivers were set back early by injuries to Drew Bennett (still out), Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton. Avery played for the first time in the last two games and made important contributions to both wins. The group of Holt, Avery and Burton, another rookie, shows promise. The QB, Marc Bulger, seems to be 100% better with the improved line play and the additional weapons provided by the young receivers and the return to form of Jackson.

The strength of the team has been the play of the front four (actually a front seven consisting of Long, Carriker, Ryan, Adeyanju, Hall, Little and Glover). Carriker seems unlikely to play at this point and is a big loss to the run defense. He and Ryan have proved very difficult to move and it will be hard for Glover to anchor for an entire game.

The Rams have gotten decent play from their linebackers and Witherspoon seems to be healthy after being injured thru training camp. The secondary has been reorganized at corner after injuries to Tye Hill, Ricky Manning and Justin Long. They now start Brown and Bartell with Craft in the nickel. The two safeties, Chavous and Atogwe now seem healthy and productive after struggling with training camp injuries.

The Pats looked very good against Denver, appeared to be a totally different team. They were very conservative using a lot of zone blocking and Cassell did a solid job of managing the attack. Moss and Welker scare me to death. The defensive front looks healthy again and the back seven seemed to be flying around.

I don't think the Rams will get blown out unless Jackson can't play. However, it's hard to see a Rams victory against a New England team playing well at home. I hope it is a good game and that everybody stays healthy.

It should be easy to get a sense of Steven Jackson's injury with Jim Haslett opening practice to the media.

Did he really? Goodness, what a buffoon.

Yup, one of the first things he did. He felt the media could promote how hard his team was trying and the area would rally around them.

Not sure if he's still allowing the media to watch the full practice though.

That could explain why some guy named Bill Belichick just applied for press credentials.....:D

Wow, I really don't understand why the hell these guys do that. I gotta think it's pressure from the owner or GM to allow the media to Validate their decision or drum up some ticket sales by being on TV.

Another reason to LOVE BB.......unless you are one of those poor saps that has to cover the Pats and I know that's gotta suck at times.

If the Rams open practice to the media would it be OK for a guy like Tomase to film their final walkthrough?

Sorry....shouldn't go there.

I absolutely agree that Jackson will be crucial to success for the Rams. If he is able to break tackles and gain yards, it might well be a long day for New England. If the Patriots can shut him down, then things will swing more in their favour.

If the D shows up as well as it did last week, then I fully expect New England to come out on top. My concerns overall are the loss of 37, Morris' injury(s), and whether we get Neal back in the lineup.

Right now, I expect New England to win. However, they still have to play the game. That's what makes this season so enjoyable. :)

Obviously BB can't send a scout there. And if the Globe reporter was to share his notes with BB that would be a violation of the rules.

But lets say every team did this. How hard would it be for a team to convince the local paper to send their best reporter to opposing teams practice field and publish in the paper detailed analysis of what they expected to see come game time.

Haslett opened those practices to get the local media on his side so he can stick around next year - remember, he's an interim coach vying for a job. It also helps with PR and selling tickets. There's no benefit to it with respect to winning games other than getting the media off your back. Let's see how long it lasts.

Good stuff, thanks for the insight into your home team. How has C. Long looked so far? Based on your comments on the front four, sounds like he's had a good start?

I think no one gives Marc Bulger any credit

On a better team Bulger would be putting up big numbers

The only thing is the Rams really have no outstanding receivers

Chris Long has played as advertised. He's a little small, less explosive than Leonard Little but a hard nosed player who has great technique, who keeps the blockers off his body, who stays off the ground, is very alert and is a real grinder.

Marc Bulger played badly in the first three games. That just happens with him at times-he has had streaks where he plays badly and then bounces back with a bunch of games with a 100+ passer rating. I'm hoping he is on a streak right now. He seems to have been boosted by the speed of Avery, a real burner.

I think most football fans know Bulger is a good QB who got dealt a somewhat crappy hand - which also led to some injury issues and frustration piling up over the last couple of seasons. Heck, our immortal PF1996 believed we'd be better off with him than that Brady guy...

That said, he's still dealing with a crappy hand. They pulled one over on the 'Skins - barely - coming off their bye and a coaching change adreneline bump. That was a classic any given Sunday matchup. Then they followed that up with the tremendous good fortune of catching the Cowboys heading into a potential meltdown exacerbated by the loss of Romo and 40 year old Brad Johnson's first start in 2 seasons... Mid season coaching changes can put a little bounce in a teams step, but it tends to be shortlived as the interim guy often has his own issues that begin to weigh like getting a contract for next season and his hands tied as to what substantive changes he can make on the fly.

As long as this team comes out with similar intensity to Monday night they really should be able to handle this Rams team at home.

Short week, backup QB, Harrison out, natural let down from a big game, etc. Don't count the Rams out quite so soon especially this season.

Aside from Steven Jackson's ability, the one thing in the Rams favor is that this has all the classic definitions of a trap game. The Pats are coming off a short week; they're coming off an emotional high of a big win over a winning team against a team that has historically had it's number; the letdown of losing one of the team leaders for the season; and the week after this game the team plays their most competitive opponent of the last several years, the Colts.

For the Pats, the fact the Rams won their last two games may work in their favor in preparing for Sunday's game. Those Rams wins will help the coaching staff convince the team that the Rams need to be taken very seriously and avoid an emotional letdown that results in the team coming out as flat as they did against the Dolphins after the Jets game.

If Jackson is in the line-up, don't expect our pass rush to look at all like it did last week. I suspect BB will have the entire defensive gameplan revolving around stopping Jackson since he's pretty much the only big time weapon that offense has these days.

Thank You for the nice post and quick breakdown of your team. Sometimes it can be tough to follow some of the NFC teams especially the ones not in the thick of it.

I wish more Opponents fans would post like this. Instead of coming in and starting a fight you came in a told us alot about your team and plenty we didn't know already and helped us get ready to watch your guys face ours.

I'm sure a lot of people wrote st louis off the last couple weeks, and that didn't work out so bad for them --- of course I like the pats chances because I'm a pats fan, but you have to respect the rams.
anybody know orlando pace's status for this week?
