Vrabel was a spare part at Pittsburgh. He definitely belongs on that list. Fauria too. And the late Mr. Vinatieri came out of nowhere too.

You could make a case that David Givens is #1 on that list yet somehow he isn't in the top 10?

Brady, yeah lets put him aside for now since hes the obvious #1

But I like Troy Brown, and Randall Gay perhaps in the top 2.

When I look back now, the Rams game was seriously one of my favorite regular season games under the Bellichick/Dynasty era, which is still going on I daresay. When Asante Samuel went down, it seemed like the doom of the Pats had begun, everything seemed to be going wrong since the start of the Pittsburgh game. But when Brown came in, I was sort of pumped up. I'm a big Troy Brown fan so I knew that the script would be good if the Pats won that. Brown the entire day was awesome. :rocker:

Gay is my Top 1
- Brady just not totally unexpected because I saw him in preseason
of year he took over and was impressed.
Yeah Brady is no surprise because anyone that looks good in preseason is obviously gonna have a hall of fame career with multiple superbowl victories...That was such a gimme.

Not sure that I would include Fauria in the list. I defintely wouldn't have had Hank Poteat on the list. Adam Vinatitraitor should be. Givens, could, theoretically, be on that list. So could Tom Ashworth.

if you watched him in pre-season you knew he was good
.... didn't mean he would win superbowls ... . If you were totally surprised that he did well then you missed him in preseason or were watching the cheerleaders.

... you draw conclusions out air ... no one was
talking probowl .... but he sure didn't look like Rohan Davey but ...
maybe he did to you ... again just because you were surprised at his
performance doesn't mean others were shocked like you aparently were.

re

I always thought Stephen Neal was an interesting story. He really fits the 'came out of nowhere' category, since he didn't even play football until he finished his career as a championship wrestler.

Many members of the Patriots offense could fall in this category. Brady, Troy Brown, David Givens, Neal, as well as other members of the O-Line...

Nice article -- light-hearted but making good points.

To me Brady is the top "out of nowhere" contributor, no question, but, to my mind, Gino runs him close. Remember the despair when Lawyer left. Remember the awful play of his replacement (Antuan Harris?) That was a flat-out wonder of great coaching -- and good luck.
