Reiss' mailbag this week

Re: Reiss's mailbag this week

The media certainly plays into it, fans the flames. That is defintiely a factor in many cases.

I just think the flames don't really need to be fanned all that much these days. Fans want to think the worst of players who leave their team. They hate that the player left and it makes it easier for them to not miss them if they can hate the person as well.

Patriot fans are a good exaple of not needing the media to bash players to turn on them. In most cases, the media appluads players who leave here for free agency for doing what is best for them, getting their mkt value, not taking the hometown discount, etc. There is little to nothing bad ever said about them. They still are ususally very unpopular if not by hated Pats fans - especially on this board.

a lot of that is to do with hate for BB and a secret desire for these media types to see him fail. For yrs they succeeded with the sox in putting pressure on the manager and whoever via the media but BB has gone against the grain and won and they cant do anything about it. like the boston media ego is hurt that "how can a coach survive here with us"

Re: Reiss's mailbag this week

but dont you realize people want to 'hear from' brady and want him to say 'hello' and be a 'leader' ?

put him in the press box and let him say 'hello' over the headset.

Re: Reiss's mailbag this week

I think it's important to note that probably Brady is still having many decisions out of his control. He's still getting paid and is still employed by the NEw England Patriots. He will likely be rehabbing in Foxboro unless a special arrangement is made. I'm sure every player, from Brady to Price (who STILL hasn't been cut, amazingly, hehe) has to tow the line when they're on the payroll. He's injured, not on vacation.

That said, he and the team are square. He's given the team a lot and if he needs to watch for a year, going mad from not being the guy, awesome. He'll come back fired up and still in his prime. I bet he wins an off-season award next year...

Lastly, though: wife/kids > football, without a doubt.

100% correct.

I was just pointing out that Patriot fans turn on former players without needing encouragement from the press.

Re: Reiss's mailbag this week

I think that is true on some level but I also believe the media ego in this town (and on the East Coast in general) dislikes it even more and drives that resentment home and that is why they cultivate and play favorites and develop agendas they transfer on to an easily led fanbases. The media once upon a time used to travel in the same social circles as players - they drank and whored and whatever together on the road. The big money changed all that, and the relationship changed as a result. Today the sports media is so competitive it's almost impossible for players to have a relationship with the media because discretion went out the window as print media jobs evaporated and the need to deliver ratings based scoops just to stay employed increased.

Good points, and I'd add to the last statement the growth of sports media via the internet, bloggers, etc making it that much more difficult for them to garner attention.

My first thought after reading Mike's reply was "et tu,Mike"? Fans appreciate Mike for his fairness, his accuracy, and his understanding of how the Patriots work. He should stick with what he does best, and tread carefully if he follows the road he's begun to tiptoe down.

Interesting because it's The H* and it's branches who've been getting all the guests this season (Troy,Christian Fauria,Big Vince,Vrabel-all regulars on Sports Tonight) and who also had "exclusive" interviews with Kraft and Rodney during preseason. I still like Reiss and Casper so I'm hoping they don't turn into s*t stirrers just to get talked about.

More questions on the quarterback - Boston.comiam ...surprised by reiss's reaction to some of the questions.
iam not sure why brady cant be in nyc ..one bad injury and all kind of stupid speculations start

I agree. I was very surprised by Reiss's whiney fan-baby I-want-my-Tommy reply.

Cripes. I'd assume that Cassel would prefer not to have Tom hanging over his shoulder

No one player in the history of the franchise has been scrutinized as much as Brady. There are certainly better things to do. This thread is hysterical!!!!!!

The Central Scrutinizer
"The white zone is for loading and unloading, only."

Maybe this whole missing the entire season , major knee surgery is not easy for Brady.Being on the sidelines would be hard. I know Brady is an unselfish player, However, he has never missed a game until this season. It must be tough to be on your own or away from the game. I mean one day you have all these press things to do you are the heart of your team everyone wants a part of you. You get hurt now your not even a part of the everyday team. Wondering if you will ever be the player you once were.

some of you out here actually know...or at least have spent some time with Brady...i've never even met him...so, it's hard for me to imagine what is really inside his head...

i actually am naive enough to "buy" it when he says it's all about the team for him...

but i also have a hard time imagining that he isn't acutely aware at all times that, in the end, it's a business...in that sense, cutting Lawyer was probably a big moment for him.

He knows that he took less money than he was worth and was repaid by management by taking away his best receivers. Still, he took their team as far as one quarter from the SB that year. Then, they gave him the weapons and he responded by taking their team all the way to the SB...only to be disappointed by an O line that folded at the worst time. Now, he's dealing with a serious injury, painful surgery and a difficult rehab...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that none of us should be surprised if he doesn't go for the money the next time around.

I've held the view for a long time...and stated it out here several times...that tom brady owes the patriots and their fans (us) nothing, after what he has given us these last seven years: five afccg's, four sb's, three rings. He could collect his salary and not play another down under his current contract and I would still feel he has already earned every penny the team has payed him and will continue to pay him.
