both pretty much play the same position, slot WR and punt returner. Who is the better player?

Welker broke Browns all time receptions in a season for the Pats.

I love Troy he is one of the best players the Pats ever had, but i got to say Welker is a bit more talented.

But you would say Chad Jack is more talented so whats that worth.

I say Brown but if Welker sustains as long as Troy than he probably will pass him.

Re: Welker vs Troy Brown

Hard to say with only one year of Welker. If we had won SB42 it might be a different story, as I thought Welker was our best player that game.
Brown did sustain a pretty amazing career here and was a huge part of our rings. So without him maybe we dont have them. As of right now it pretty much has to be Brown, but Welker still has a lot of years left with us (4 years left on his contract including 08 I believe?).

Re: Welker vs Troy Brown

Welker is great. No doubt. Troy was great too - and did not have the opportunities that Wes has now. Plus, when Welker plays defense....shoot, when Welker makes a drive sustaining play to vault us to SB victory - then yah, he may be better than Troy. Until then - I "BOOOOOOOOOOOOO" you for starting this thread. You should be grateful, remember! ;)

Re: Welker vs Troy Brown

Well, even Randy Moss had to admit he was only the second best WR ever to play at Marshall. :)

The way I see it, we'll all ultimately be glad we had both Welker and Brown, forget about the comparisons between them.

Re: Welker vs Troy Brown

I'd like to see Welker play nickle back.

Or go deep.

Or block a field goal.

Welker is probably a better wideout, but Troy Brown is the better all-around player.

Well, Welker can kick extra points.

Re: Welker vs Troy Brown

Brown was a faster player than Welker and played all aspects of the game.

Welker also benefits from playing with a better receiving cast than Brown ever did.

Its much too early to tell with Welker.

And FGs. His career long is actually a yard or two longer than Gostkowski's.

who cares?

they are both team players who will do whatever it takes to help the patriots win. that is all i care about

Bethel Johnson

;)

Welker may be more talented overall at wide reciever but Troy Brown is about as clutch as it gets. Without Troy no dynasty.

Troy Brown was the better football player. No doubt.

Re: Welker vs Troy Brown

Who would start a thread like this on the day Troy retires?

Are you a recent fan? Because you must be comparing the Troy of today with the Welker of today. You just never saw Troy in his prime. In his time, Troy was every bit as good as Welker as a WR and PR, and of course Troy played DB.

I am grateful for having both players.

Welker is a better reciever (not by much)

Brown is a better football player (not by much)

Troy Brown, without question, is the better football player.
Troy Brown is also the better receiver.
He was a #1.
Welker was a very good slot receiver, playing with an all-time great QB and all-time great WR.
Brown did it all - #1 receiver, PR, DB.

Welker might develop into as good a player, and had a terrific first year with the record-setting offense. I hope he does.

Troy Brown was a big time $$$ player ... until Welker becomes the same he'll be 2nd fiddle to Troy. Physical ability is just a piece of the answer ... Troy was about so much more than just physical ability.

If Welker hasn't played DB, it's only because they've never asked/needed him to do so. I suspect he'd do a pretty decent job of it. On one of the few INTs that #12 threw his way last year, you could see Welker instantly go from WR mode to DB mode, almost literally as if a switch had been thrown. That, combined with his acceleration and willingness to tackle lead me to think he wouldn't embarrass himself as a nickel back.
