Freeman: Pats fans are the most obnoxious

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

Yeah, but you're missing the point of the article. It's not that it's just one bad game. It's one bad game amongst an almost perfect year, three SB trophies and 7 years of continuous winning. These fans can't allow their team one stinker? (not to mention missing their starting QB). It's rather sad really.
I don't think it's nearly that simple. This is not about the Pats stinkin' out the joint after 21 straight regular season wins, it's about the expectations of what Matt Cassel ought to be doing.

Imagine if Brady wasn't injured and played the game, and thus we kept it more competitive but still couldn't win because, basically, the D could not stop the Dolphin's scheme. Would the fans have booed this?

Imagine if Cassel did play lights out but the Pats still lost by, say 38-34. Would the fans have booed this?

I think the fans were set up by the teams performance in the preseason, and that Matt Cassel has simply become the whipping boy.

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

I did and I think you're off base. Racism exists everywhere in spite of heated denials to the contrary. I don't think his comments have anything to do with who among the Patriots made their feelings known.

This guy seemed (and still seems) to genuinely admire this team. Picked them to win the SB although he felt the Giants DL could cause problems based on what he saw down the stretch. Said for reasons he could never fathom the Patriots just didn't appear to have come to play with their customary edge while the Giants were all edge. He gets how hard it was to ever go undefeated - he thought it would never happen again let alone in a 16 game season or stretch to 18. He believes that effort drained them. He gets what they have accomplished in it's entirety over 7 years. Too many fans here have adopted what is really a perversion of Bill's one game/season/team at a time mantra.
I agree with you - racism does exist everywhere. It's Freeman who disagrees, to a significant degree, with both of us. If you Google "Mike Freeman Boston" and read the article he wrote in the Jacksonville paper which excoriates Boston fans and paints all of us with the same racist brush, I think you might consider that I'm not that far "off base." Without a doubt, Boston was one of the most racist cities in the United States in the 1960's and 70's. While things aren't perfect now, they are a whole lot better than they were then and, having traveled extensively, I can tell you that it is a worse in other cities. Freeman, clearly, disagrees. His agenda is not with the Patriots and their coach. Rather, it is with the fans of Boston/New England.

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

its a double edged sword....it's not like other fans don't boo when their team gets rolled like how the pats did this past weekend.
Other fans boo when their team sucks for year after year.

Did Steeler fans boo a couple years ago when their team went 6-10?

The Pats are 2-1, winners of 21 of their last 22.

Other teams boo because they have Matt Millen and Al Davis making personnel decisions. We Have Scott Pioli. Other teams boo when teams are coached by horrible coaches. We have Bill Belichick.

No call to boo the Pats for losing a game. Simply ignorant.

And please don't give me the stupid "I have the right to boo." Of course you have the right. You have the right to cheer when an opposing player is paralyzed and carried off the field. You need to learn the difference between having the right to do something, and doing the right thing.

Have to agree that in general Pats fans are spoiled and in general ignorant of how the NFL functions.

Very well said. I agree that the general fan is spoiled with what we have done in the last 7 years. So we lost one game in our last 22 tries. That's a damn good record. So what that we lost to a team that went 1 and 15 last year. This may be there year.

We shall see what the rest of the season will bring. One game at a time.

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

He can shut his ******* mouth. They got embarrased by a top 10 draft team, fans deserved to boo such a pathetic performance. The media is just having a field day with us huh? I would have booed, and I'm a die hard Pats fan as much as anyone. Come on, call me fair weather now.

Don't you know anything? The last thing a good fan does is boo when the team is playing their worst game of the decade. That's when you cheer. Why is this so tough to understand?

Just one question to the Thought Police.

Since they are no longer on a winning streak, if the team plays that poorly again, is it OK to boo?

Ok, so "this" year the Patriots are a Dynasty and we as fans suck. But last year we were cheats, frauds and every win BB ever led us to had to be questioned. Now that the cheating part has been stuck in their faces they find something else to bad mouth anything New England about.
I really wish fans and certain players would see that and just not react to this this crap. They are HATERS!

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

People don't boo when the team loses a hard fought game. For example, I was at the '06 Colts game where they lost due to a Brady INT (one of 4). No one booed. Brady played poorly, there were dropped passes, the D was unable to get off the field at times - but they hung in there and kept it close.

You'll have an awfully hard time convincing me that last Sunday's game was hard fought. Forget the fact that it was Miami. It looked like the D just accepted defeat and gave up late in the 3rd quarter. That's worthy of boo'ing.

That's BS. In the first game of the 2006 season the Patriots got off to a slow start and were down something like 17-10 to the Bills at half time (a game they went on to win BTW), and guess what? The team got booed. It was the first game of the effing season and the offense was struggling a little bit with a lot of new faces but all the fans cared was that they were not beating the other team so like whiny little brats they booed. Even the announcers said it was ridiculous. The level of entitlement among this fan base is really depressing.

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

Did Steeler fans boo a couple years ago when their team went 6-10?

As someone who grew up in western PA, let me just a couple quick examples since you asked. In 2001 when the Steelers were the #1 team in the AFC and they had a kicker who was struggling a bit all season long, the fans booed the kicker coming on the kick a FG in a late regular season game vs. the Jets. A game they won.

In 2004 AFC championship they booed Cowher's decision to kick the late FG when they were down to us by 14. Bad decision, probably. But you can't tell me Cowher is so much more worthy of booing than our defense last Sunday.

In 2005 week 3, I went to watch the Pats at Heinz. When we came back late in the game, in our 2nd to the last scoring drive, a good # of fans got restless and started to file out. Right before the Steelers came back to TIE THE GAME UP until Brady/Adam V bailed us out in the last minute.

They've booed their team several other times for some inept performances, successful year or not, and nobody is going to call the Steeler fan base a bunch of bandwagoners. It happens damn near EVERY stadium, people should stop acting like it's just Pats fans. This is like other teams fans on KFFL and other message boards that whine and moan about Boston fans being the worst fans on the planet. I'm not from NE but IMO the only reason NE fans get picked on is because a) The area has fielded successful teams in all 3 major sports and b) There are typically more fans than other bases and are heard more often.

well said. I agree.

This is the thing I think people are not understanding. You have a right to do anything in this country. You just need to ask yourself, is what i'm doing the right thing to do?

If my kid gets A's for two years, then falters a bit and brings home a C in one class, I'm going to boo his pathetic performance.

Re: Freeman:pats fans are the most obnoxious

What I don't understand is how can Freeman say that Pats fans are most obnoxious for booing when Jets fans have cheered their own player's injuries and sexually harrass women at Gate D yet we're the most obnoxious.

" Shiot, I got nuttin' to right abowt today, and my dedline is coming....think dufus think....... I got it(Bulb!!) I'll right abowt how obnoxius the poor patsie fans are, I always hated them anyways....

Wow, i'm smat, hopefully some fans of other teems wil axually reed it an gimme page hits so I can a ceep my jobb.

Bah

He wrote "Some football fan purists with more intricate knowledge of the sport are being replaced by corporate metrosexuals who see a football game as nothing more than a way to impress a client or get laid.

Maybe those fans were the ones doing most of the booing. Maybe not. I'm not sure."

I agree with him. And I am sure--true hardcore fans understand that booing a home team that has provided almost 7 years of dominant football, "all-out all the time" aggressiveness does not deserve to be booed after a game like last Sunday.

So put down your white wine, set aside the plate of shrimp scampi fusion tacos, and clap ya hands, big babies.

That counts as class in New York.

I'm not a prude but that is one expression that you don't often see in the mainstream media or in a national magazine or reputable website. He couldn't have cleaned it up or couched it in language less crude (e.g. get lucky). It's one thing to post it on a BB or forum like here. It's another for it to be part of CBS.sportsline....
Just my $0.02

I agreed with the booing. Not for the losing, but for the quitting. The Dolphins had lost 20 of their last 21 games. This was a home game against the worst team in football.

I believe that Matt Cassell can be a competent game managing QB as proven in the Jets game. However, If the Pats fall behind by a couple touchdowns he cannot carry them back. Starters on both sides of the ball ( not just Moss ) appeared to agree with me, so they let up. Hence 38 -13.

Average cost for a family of 4 for the game $597, ( according to Comcast ).
We are also in a recession. You spend you family's money watching multimillionaires let up against the worst team in football on a Sunday afternoon you have a right to boo. If the team is trying, then booing is unthinkable.

While I am not on board with booing your own team, I have to point out something about the whole "spoiled fan" concept. Patriots fans may very well been living in the lap of luxury between 2001 and 2007, but 2008 has probably been one of the hardest any fan has had to endure. After losing the superbowl, spoiling the greatest season ever (maybe Ellis shouldn't be the one talking) and thereby beacoming the laughing stock of the league the fans held their chins high. During the whole Walsh/Specter/Goodell debacle we fought back and held firm. When Brady went down we continued to have faith. Its been a tough stressfull year for the fans, I can understand if that gets to them.

True, but name me one other team that has given its fans the ride we've had for the past 7 years.

I hated the game, but I was disgusted when the fans, who sometimes can barely be heard when things are going well, could be heard loud and clear when things went south.
