The more you think about it and see photos, it was a dirty hit..

It doesn't matter one bit if he intended to tackle him or hurt him (and I don't think he planned to hurt him) none the less, 100% DIRTY play.

Sorry, but I don't need to understand better. Regarding your post, it has nothing to do with the rule as it is written. Regardless of what contact his helmet made, the actions he took that resulted in the helmet hit are what make it legal and clean (this is a physical, violent game; helmet contact happens all the time and nearly on every play. Helmet hits are not illegal.)

You're arguing stuff that doesn't matter.

You are actually arguing stuff that doesn't matter. Trying to prove futile points with STILL pictures as if momentum and real-time has nothing to do with anything.

THe fact is he was blocked to the ground, Sammy got off him, he got to all 4's and LUNGED at Brady's legs... He didn't attempt to tackle anywhere, he just LUNGED at the knees. At best you can say is that it was a horrible decision by him without intent to injure. Regardless of intent, he should NOT have lunged at Brady's legs.

so where's the talk of fine and suspension?

I'll be surprised if the NFL does an about face and does either. NFLN said last night they already ruled it wasn't intentional/dirty.

From that pic it does look like he is spearing Brady with his helmet below the knee, unimpeded. Sometimes I hate people.

Note this is stage 2 of Brady grief: anger.

This is not a dirty play. Period. Morris was actually holding him and should have been called for it. Pollard was trying with every ounce of energy to get to Brady. Morris pushed Pollard to the ground (again) as Brady was stepping into his throw. This is when the contact was made. Again, NOT DIRTY.

I have been a Pats fan for 30 years, but I try to maintain some objectivity. Wilfork's hit was definitely a lot more "dirty" than Pollard's. Sorry, but sometimes the truth stings. We will all get over it - we have to. Now, let's just use all our energy to cheer for Cassell and Co.

If lunging from your hands and knees into a QB's knee is not dirty, then there is no such thing as a dirty play

He was inadvertently blocked into him. It wasn't dirty. Morris was literally falling on top of him as he went for Brady. No one is to blame.

Also from what I remeber Brady stepped up into the block.

The slow mo is pretty useful. I think you may be right. THe one still frame makes it look like he could be just trying to spear him with his head. This is less clear, which means they go with their original decision.

I'm starting to wonder if some of you have ever played football before. He should give up because he was knocked to the ground?!? In the real football world, if you get knocked on your arse you continue the play. Even more, you get your butt to the football and make whatever play you can on the ball. It sucks that this happened to one of the best players in the NFL but injuries happen all the time. Let's just hope that next year Brady can come back and entertain us again!

lusdawg ! are you serious or just plain blind ? Go back to Wilfork's play and you will see him falling forward with a Bill's defender behind him. Yesterday was not the same at ALL, Pollard while on the ground lunged for the knee !! Cant even compare it with Wilfork' hit. Sorry DIRTY HIT. Hope he gets suspended.

That is NOT the point of contact! He is diving at Toms knees and Sammy isn't touching him yet! I posted a pic of a better angle so you will understand better.

Did you even watch the game? Morris took him to the ground and Pollard had to dig and claw at the turf with his hands and feet just to get in a crawling position to get to Brady, all the while with Morris on his back. Go to NFL.com and watch the actual play. Keep your eye on #34.

Thank you... someone with common sense.

Well if you define dirty as against the rules. Then yeah it was dirty.

"No defensive player who has an unrestricted path to the quarterback may hit him flagrantly in the area of the knee(s) or below when approaching in any direction."

http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/protectionofpasser

Could someone tell me what definition of "unrestricted path" includes "from your knees with a running back draped all over you"?

The hit was not dirty - he lunged to make a play, with a blocker on top of him. He lunged with his arms out, trying to sack brady. There's no way he was trying to hurt Brady, though that's what happened.

Wilfork's hit was dirty, to me, because in the replays it looks clear that he intentionally shot out his elbow at Losman's knee when he had other options.

I agree with you. His instinct at that point is to try and tackle the QB. He's on the ground and lunging at him, Tom steps in towards him as he throws and doesnt see him

I think it was just one of those unfortunate things but no way IMHO is he intentionally trying to hurt him - just bring him down

It's easier to argue Wilfork's hit is against the rules (Losman didn't have the ball and Wilfork did, intentionally or otherwise, stick a chicken wing out).

Exactly - that's the only reason I ever thought Wilfork's hit was dirty - you watch the replay, it looks like he's trying to elbow Losman in the knee.

Nobody sane tries to lunge helmet first into a knee, btw - that's how people get paralyzed

Morris was not on him when he lunged. Morris was next to him.

Look at it this way -is there anyway a quarterback is not injured when a defensive player does that to him? There's no way. It will take out the QB's knee every time. Intentional or not, this type of hit can't be allowed.

But I suppose that Redskins tackle was also just making a play when he grabbed Kiwanuka's ankle.

It was definitely questionable. He launched himself helmet first in the direction of Brady's knee. That is fact. Morris wasn't pushing him in that direction in any way. In fact, Morris may have moved him enough to spare Brady a direct impact through his knee. Pollard hit what he was aiming at and he did it with his helmet.

How exactly is someone supposed to dive without going "helmet first"?

Again, for those with the blinders on ...

Watch Morris. He actually seems to throw Pollard into Brady as Brady is stepping into the throw. Sorry guys, I love our Pats, too, but "it is what it is." Pollard's hit wasn't dirty.

As for the Wilfork thing, just as a previous poster noted, Wilfork threw his elbow out at Losman's knee.

Folks, lunging at a QBs legs in order to tackle him is legal, just like lunging at a RBs legs in order to make a tackle is legal.
