Some of these picks are real headscratchers. Folks, we have scored less than 20 points in each of our last 3 postseason losses! We need PLAYMAKERS, we need a game changer at the WR position to enable us to score more than 20 points in the championship games!

We have been looking hard at WRs for a reason. I say we go Marquis Lee with our first round pick at WR, and address defense/OL in the 2nd/3rd rounds. Did you guys see some of the catches Lee made at the combine? He is a future star.

I think the leaky offensive line had plenty to do with that too. It's hard for Brady to get the ball to any playmakers when he couldn't step into a pass after even a 3-step drop all too often. Someone was in his face much too quickly last year.

Let's see what we already have at WR after a year in the system before we get even younger at the position.

  • Kony Ealy, DE Mizzou
  • Bishop Sankey, RB Washington
  • Dri Archer, WR Kent State
  • Christian Kirksey, OLB Iowa
  • George Uko, DT USC
  • Tre Boston, FS, UNC
  • Bryce Quigley, OT, SDSU

I don't have the time to put together a draft , but I do want an upgrade at center, a top TE and a TE prospect later in the draft. I'm intrigued by Thomas from VA Tech. Could he be a TE & backup QB?
Thoughts? Feel free to shred the idea, but I'm thinking he's a late rounder who may be best suited at TE.
Yup, just that simple. You're right.

I've got a number of prospects in mind, but by position need I'd offer the following:

1.) Center. We need an anchor for the long haul. Now's the time to get a good one.

2.) O-Line. Any position will do. We can use an extra body to step in as well as to learn from the guys we have.

3.) Tight End. Have to find someone to help out. We've got talent, but not enough and especially not enough depth.

4.) QB. I REALLY want the Pats to draft AJ McCarron. He'd be an ideal backup to Brady and potential successor to him. Hard worker, smart, wants to come to NE, and has played in a similar system to what the Patriots run, with similar terminology.

Any other picks should be

A.) Best value available st that pick or

B.) Defense. Any position.

4/18/2014 Patriots 7 Round Mock Draft(Used CBS Sports Big Board)

29. Traded to Vikings for #40, #79, #148
40. Ra'Shede Hageman DT Minnesota
62. Troy Niklas TE Notre Dame
79. Deone Bucannon SS Washington State
93. Jordan Tripp OLB Montana
130. AJ McCarron QB Alabama (CBS Big Board has him going in the 4th round)
140.(COMP) Kevin Norwood WR Alabama
148. Bryan Stork OC Florida State
198. Traded to Eagles for 2015 5th Rounder
206. Aaron Lynch DE Florida State
244. Brandon Thomas OG Clemson

Very similar mock, but I a few changes:

29. Traded to Vikings for #40, #79, #148
40. Xavier Su'a-Filo G UCLA
62. Troy Niklas TE Notre Dame
79. Deone Bucannon SS Washington State
93. Jordan Tripp OLB Montana
130. AJ McCarron QB Alabama (CBS Big Board has him going in the 4th round)
140. Daniel McCullers DT Tennessee
148. Jerick McKinnon RB Georgia Southern
206. Trey Burton TE/WR/H-Back Florida
244. Brandon Thomas OG Clemson

29. Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State

BB has never drafted a first round WR but this year they have been all over first round WRs, often a good indication of interest. One of the players they haven't contacted pre-draft is the former BOB WR who just happens to be 6-3 and run a 6.5 3-cone. I don't think that's a coincidence. If BB is going to break his first round WR duck, it will be on such a specimen.

62. Dominique Easley, DE/DT, Florida

I do think BB is interested in getting more aggressive up-front and one-gapping specialist Dominque Easley would fit that change of philosophy. His big win though is that he's equally comfortable playing as an edge guy as well as a 3-tech. He'll be able to give Nink and Chandler a much needed breather next year as well as giving us that inside threat.

93. CJ Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa

Drafting a TE is a necessity and CJF is a really nice fit. He'll be what we were hoping Jake Ballard was going to be: a Gronk backup, red zone threat and an extra blocker.

130 Christian Kirksey, Iowa, LB

Iowa as this years Rutgers? Kirksey is a very accomplished linebacker both against the run and in coverage. Not as flashy as Lavonte David or as athletically gifted as Ryan Shazier, but he is a very good primary backup that can start if needed.

140 Brock Vereen, S/CB, Minnesota

A typical BB player; versatile, athletic, a leader and smart. He's also Shane's brother. A very BB pick I think.

198 Marion Grice, RB, Arizona St.

A former WR, Marion Grice comes from the Kevin Faulk, Danny Woodhead, Shane Vereen school of receiving running backs.

206. John Urschel, OL, Penn State

The moment this guy gets drafted, he probably becomes the smartest guy in the NFL. And you want to have smart guys if you are looking for a centre.

244. Kenny Guiton, QB, Ohio State

Athletic, strong arm, very smart and great teammate. How many backup QBs get voted team captain by their peers. So long as BB et al are comfortable with his QB skills, Guiton has to be a good possibility for the Pats.

Note 1. If I had an extra 5th rounder, Matt Patchan of BC would have been the pick. A typically Patriot-like long and athletic OT. Takes Svitek's roster spot.

Note 2. Keep an eye out for Kevin Pamphile of Purdue. An athletic OT that projects as a guard. Late rounder or UDFA but BB does like to get his UDFAs from the bigger schools and conferences usually.

Also, Nikita Whitlock is probably the most BB type player in the draft. He's a 5-11, 250lb NT  , and obviously he won't be playing there in the NFL but this guy, playing NT for Wake Forest, wasn't that far behind AAron Donald in terms of production. He apparently showed well at his pro day in FB drills and rocked up a 6.88 3-cone at over 250lbs.

Trade #29 and #93 to the Raiders for #36 and #67
Trade #67 to the Browns for #83 and #106

36-Scott Crichton, DL
62-Dominique Easley, DL
83-C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE
106- Christian Kirksey, LB
130- Bryan Stork, OL
140-Brandon Coleman, WR
198-Brandon Thomas, OL
206-Larry Webster, TE (converted DL)
244-Zach Kerr, DL

Used Draftek rankings, no trades.

29 - Ryan Shazier
62 - Troy Niklas
93 - Joel Bitonio
130 - Daniel McCullers
140 - Andre Williams
198 - Loucheiz Purifoy
206 - Brock Vereen
244 - Richard Rodgers

I have no idea and for each pick there were at least 3 players that looked good. I'm sure the team knows a lot more than I do. They'll probably bring in a few QBs as priority free agents, don't think they'll grab one high this year as Brady looks good for 2-3 more years.

I would be excited if this happened!

There should be the usual trades up and down. I expect us to come out of Round 4 with players at the positions listed below. The rounds seem right for the best value. I am least sure about the first pick who could be anyone or any position, and obviously could be traded up or down.

1) Defensive lineman (could be linebacker)

2) Tight end

3) Offensive lineman

4) Quarterback

4) Running back

I try not to get attached to individual players. After all, they could be picked before we draft, or Belichick may find that the value of the player is much lower than we see the value to be. For example, Hageman or Tuitt may be awesome choices and future pro-bowlers. Or perhaps, Belichick sees Crichton as a better value and a better fit.

29 - Ryan Shazier
62 - Troy Niklas
93 - Joel Bitonio

244 - Richard Rodgers

Bitonio will not be there at #93, his stock is on the rise and could go in the top 40.

Thoughts? Feel free to shred the idea, but I'm thinking he's a late rounder who may be best suited at TE.

Full version: Thomas is pretty raw as a quarterback; from NFL.com: "WEAKNESSES: Inconsistent footwork. . . . still developing touch . . . needs to learn to protect himself . . . too careless with the football (39 INTs, 23 fumbles as a starter)." You can't simultaneously ask him to switch over to TE and learn that position and still expect him to have time to work on his QBing skills; they're too different. [This is the same reason why, despite the hopes of a significant number of posters on this board, BB continues, year in and year out, to keep a dedicated long snapper on the team.]

tl;dr version: No.

I want Marcus Martin,C from SoCal...a reach by the "experts" standards, but not much of one...otherwise...DEFENSIVE TACKLE. I want nothing to do with these fantasy football geekaloids screaming for QB's and WR's with their 1st pick

After the news about Purifoy being a narc came out today, followed by a full investigation as to why his warrant from last week was torn up, and the news of him possessing bath salts, I would be surprised if we didn't have him erased off of our board entirely.

The boldfaced part is the only one that truly matters. Being a narc didn't end Nick Kaczur's career here, although it did raise a lot of enmity.

I'm pretty sure that most have Martin being there in the 3rd round.

I know that both Deus and Kontra have us taking him in the 3rd.

Except the sheriff for that county started a full investigation as to why he was a narc, yet didn't cooperate enough to warrant getting his charges dropped, so some are expecting those charges to be reinstated. If he didn't cooperate enough to justify getting the charges dropped, then he's not only been called out as a narc, but he's a dumb narc who didn't even fulfill his obligation, and will have charges and warrants filed once again.

After the Winston investigation (and Hernandez stuff), I would question any Florida local law enforcement when it comes to how they handle their cases against their local college athletes. Something smells down there for sure.

Either way, I'd be leery about taking a chance with Purifoy in any round prior to maybe the 6th/7th. Of course, it's entirely possible that Belichick feels that he's that good of a talent that it's worth a shot. We'll have to see.

Can't really see it. After all, they did draft Ebner before Dennard.
