Sorry if this has already been posted, but I scanned the first couple of pages of threads and so far...no dice. He's not on our P.S., right? and he wasn't claimed by anyone? I'm kind of shocked we didn't stash him, but I wonder if BB said, go look for a job on a roster, and if you don't have any luck, you can come back here.

Anyone hear anything?

I was very surprised when lots on this board felt there was no way Guiterezz (sp?) would clear waivers. Shocked. I thought he should consider himself very lucky were he fortunate enough to even land on the Pats PS which hasn't happened yet. I think he might eventually though.

Not sure....but there was no news at all...and that is a bit odd...especially with so many saying NO WAY will he clear. Right at this time there is no room for him..bbut in a few weeks, when more is settled, he certainly could be back. Also, there are other concerns the team has. Given the Pats situation..why NOTHING about a try out with another team...or something?? I do find that strange..especially with NFLN listing him as a LARGE surpise cut...

I'm kind of surprised that he wasn't re-signed to the PS after

he passed thru waivers. Cassel's contract is up after this year

and the Pats will need a third quarterback next year.

There are several vets with crappy resumes available. Why is a team gonna sign Gutz?

Disclaimer: Before summer camp I thought Gutz might beat out Cassel this year seeing that it's Cassie's last contract season but watching both at camp it was obvious that Gutz failed to progress even to that level and other summer camp followers observed a lack of arm strength, so I went with the Brady-Cassel-O'Connell camp as my prediction.

Maybe Gutierrez was listed as a LARGE surprise cut because

Cassel looked so lousy.

The guys during the Tampa game kept on going on about how BB is massive on the kid so NFLN seem to be in their own little world when it comes to "Gootz".

Things are still shaking out.

Maybe...vut it was funny sort of..later Sat evening..and seeing him listed like that..although they had Fernando Bryant listed as Antonio for most of the evening...so..who really knows. I just found it amusing he was along teh crawk with Rudi, Anderson and pro bowlers...

Or...maybe he was listed as a LARGE surprise cut because the Boston sports media are easily impressed/mislead lemmings who once spun can't think critically for themselves any better than the majority of the fan base sheep they do their thinking for...

Exactly. Gutz really hasn't done anything to gain the experience for a team to want to put him on the 53. With his PS eligibility he should land on someone's PS. He's probably sorting through offers now.

There are something like 700 players cut from NFL rosters on cut down day. About 1/3 of them end up on pracitce squads and a handful actually get picked up by a team.
Over 400 of them are out of football, and no one has a job for them. Gutierez is one of the 400 or so.

I'd like my crow sauteed with onions and a side of fries.

I never thought Gutierrez would pass waivers. Last year they kept him on the roster -- if they thought he'd pass waivers, why use a spot for him? Now he has another year of experience but he obviously failed to impress those who matter. Whether he would have passed waivers last year (when he had an impressive preseason) we'll never know.

It goes to show that the games do matter. The Pats coaches get to see much more of him: meetings, practices, etc. But other coaches who vote with their roster spots, only see the games and college film. Gutierrez looked especially poor in the 4th game against abysmal competition and with receivers who made the Pats roster.

Yeah, Bill said yesterday he did a good job here and improved from last season but was behind Cassel AND O'Connell who also did well and improved. Said he has a future in the league. Of course, he said that about Rohan, too...

The problem for Gutierrez is he's an effort guy who would probably pay dividends on a PS here but he likely wants a shot and he has none here unless O'Connell implodes over the next 12 months. Best case he'd be a 3 here for 2009. So he will hope to find a PS spot on a team with no great confidence builder at starter or backup and hope he could climb the ladder with them over time. Right now not knowing anyone else's system is enough to keep a guy at his level unemployed. Once a few guys who know systems start to flounder he may get picked up for a PS.

I was one of the people who said he may not pass through waivers. I never was one of the people who felt there was no way he could pass through waivers though. I just felt with all the undrafted free agent QBs that are slotted to be #3 QBs that someone might think Gutierrez was a better option.

Then again, several people felt Redd couldn't pass through waivers either.

I like that word. "Whither".

We've got bingo!

The way I see it, try to look at it from the perspective of another team's HC or GM. Gutz is a player with no NFL starting experience, and what was available to see on film had some good, and some very average play. Why bring him in to replace a known commodity on your team that has the advantage of having already learned your team's playbook and has gone through OTA's and TC running those plays?

Because there were about seven teams this year who had undrafted free agents being their #3 QB. Not all of them are really even cut out to be #3 QBs. Your #3 QB is a developmental guy who you are trying to groom for the future. An undrafted free agent only has a three month advantage over a guy like Gutierrez. That isn't a huge advantage when you are considering a #3 QB who you hope to be competing for a #2 QB job in a year or two. If teams felt Gutierrez had more upside than the guy they had on their roster, I doubt they would have trouble pulling the trigger eventhough he doesn't have the experience in their system. It isn't like many offensive systems are worlds different from one another. I could see your point if it was for a #2 QB spot.

That said, teams may just feel that Gutierrez isn't better than the guy they have on their roster. I still don't see lack of knowledge of their system or commodity you know is the reason. Otherwise, JT O'Sullivan would have been out of the league by now rather than starting for the 49ers.

You might also consider that everyone knows that Belichick has evaluated him and found him to be of poorer quality than Cassell. Given that evaluation, I can understand that teams are reticent to put him on their 53.
