So we cut John Lynch, to do what again??

to not guarentee his salary?? Im not getting it .. We signed him for 1.5 mill but cut him, and some people think we will bring him back??


My questions are - why not sign him in the preseason to a incentive ladden contract


and why is it assumed he is coming back to pay for less...


Its like , look we have to let you go this week to make payroll, but we will hire you back next week..

If that is the case 2 people are going to get cut, because we will need to cut someone in Kevin Faulk's spot..

I think we live in an age of too much information, I remember a team that went 18-1 last year and that team should do pretty well again.. who cares what they do or how they do it, all that matters is what happens next sunday @ 1:00 PM.. this is getting way to complicated and way too analytical.. it is football.

Actually in some cases it's not enough of the whys in all of this as it should be.The fans know what is done..and can see possibilities..but without the team saying why,and laying out all the cards on the table, reasons can be thrown out..and the whole situation totally confused. So yes, sometimes information just leads to speculation and assumption in ways that are totally crazy.
As far as Lynch's cut goes..most do NOT get it. It's not really about Lynch..THAT wasn't the driving force..they have injuries...and needed to make moves. THAT is what drove the whole thing...Wayson obviously is injured..they needed another TE...there are only 6 O linemen healthy NOT enough for a game..another lineman needed.. Gee who doe we cut??
Obviously the answer to that was Jackson and Lynch...But wait a minute that might make too much sense..

Lynch left Denver because he wasn't going to be more than a situational/backup player. He signed here hoping to prove he could be more. We signed him to the kind of deal he would sign because we were intrigued to see if he in fact could. To do so we paid a $300K deposit.

But we apparently came to the conclusion he could not be. As had Denver. It's almost as if Bill let him play out the string in game 4 to showcase what he's got left in the tank. Kind of like a veteran courtesy audition tape. We passed on paying off the balance of $1.2M guaranteed after Sunday for that player. He's now shoppinng himself to see if another team believes he's worth that. If one doesn't surface there is the possibility he returns here for significantly less and is satisfied to do so because we gave him options and he discovered he is what Bill and Shannahan think he is. His and Bill's comments are what hint at that.

Like any other player we consider, we'd probably like to have him but only at a price that makes sense. It's the whacky way they think down in Foxboro... It's like the dance they do with Ty seasonally. You'd like a player and could use him, but you don't have to have him and you won't overpay to. Saving a million two here and there may seem like small banannas on a $116M cap but it's how you end up with a $121M cap to play with in a given year rather than unable to maneuver when you really need to.

Think of it this way. They had some money earmarked for Junior and/or Ty but neither was ready or willing to be signed a month ago. So they let Lynch occupy that kind of cap slot for the preseason to see if he might represent better/alternate use of the funds. They decided that was not the case. And he may have still been determined to play a starting role that he did not think he was going to have a shot at here. So both sides agreed to let him keep looking and if nothing materializes he's always welcome back here in the role we envision for him...

Right now Bill has other priorities heading into week 1, not the least of which are depth concerns at CB, TE and OL. They held off cutting two players. We hear they were shopping one and it's possible they were shopping both. Not for draft picks but perhaps for bodies they could use who they anticipated as cuts who might not make it to them because of waiver claims. And it's also possible they were waiting for information on a dinged up player or two they were not yet comfortable would be available this week.

At the end of the day suffice it to say everything Bill and Scott do is predicated on value. So there was some value in holding off on those cuts for 18 hours and some value in ultimately cutting them.

And when Faulk comes back the guy we cut will be the temporary 53rd member of the roster... The player who occupies that slot at any given time will find himself getting cut regularly throughout the season because that player is what he is...

It’s widely believed that safety John Lynch, who was cut by the Patriots on Sunday, will re-sign with the team after Week One. The apparent goal by the Patriots is to avoid owing Lynch his full salary for 2008 if it’s determined early on that the relationship isn’t working out.
Under the CBA, a player with four or more years of service make elect to take the balance of their salary as “termination pay” if they’re on the opening-day roster and thereafter cut.
But the New York Jets might try to disrupt this plan.
The Jets made a serious run at Lynch before he signed in New England, and if they were to match his deal in New England and put him on the Week One roster (thereby guaranteeing the whole thing), Lynch might be tempted.
But the Jets don’t have a lot of cap room. And the Patriots aren’t stupid (except when they drafted Chad Jackson . . . and when they got caught last year videotaping defensive coaching signals at a time when they knew that teams were onto their tactics). They wouldn’t cut Lynch with an intention to re-sign him if they had any reason to believe he’d sign with the Jets.
Besides, it sounds like Lynch already knows he’ll be back.
“I have no regrets about my time thus far with the Patriots,” Lynch said on Sunday in a statement released by the team. “The immense respect that I’ve long held for the organization has been only heightened over the past couple of weeks. I am going to keep all options open and look forward with excitement to see what the future brings.”

The Globe reports BB and Lynch both acted differently than a normal cut:

The Patriots, in a break from the standard news conference, included comments from Belichick and Lynch that made it sound as if Lynch could be back."It goes without saying but John is an all-time great safety, one of the league's classiest professionals, and his elite play speaks for itself," Belichick said. "As has been the case in other situations, I would not rule anything out down the road."
Said Lynch, "I have no regrets about my time thus far with the Patriots. The immense respect that I've long held for the organization has been only heightened over the past couple of weeks. I am going to keep all options open and look forward with excitement to see what the future brings."

I think they'll resign him and he'll really add a lot. It's not like he's too old and slow or anything.

Next up will be to resign John Hannah, then Steve Nelson and Andre Tippett. Maybe Ray Clayborn too. Can never have enough experience.

If you have a Belichick to media translation device implant you would realize that's closer to what he's thinking as he forms responses to the inane questions from the peanut gallery at his daily PC's than the equally undecipherable untranslated audio would indicate...

I can't even repeat in mixed company what it is what it is or we will do what is best for the team translates into...

I think we should not be too surprised by Lynch getting released. We have seen this type of roster move before with the Patriots where a player gets cut and then reappears a week or two later. It might not work out that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does.
