I can imagine most of you are quite angry today, but kudos to guys like Deus who didn't necessarily have Cassel as a lock cut.

Cassel was the best choice to back up Brady they any other QB on the teams roster, Im not surprised he wasnt cut.

Because neither Gutierrez or O'Connell was good enough to get backup reps, and O'Connell never would have made the PS?

I never had any doubt........look for the possibility of a vet though, that knows our system, to knock Cassel off the team. Huard released yet??

Chris Simms has been relaesed.

To be honest, I didn't see much difference between the two after watching all four games. Cassel's experience sealed the deal for me. If the unthinkable happens, he'll manage the offense, but our DEFENSE and RUNNING GAME will have to STEP UP.

I think people were ignoring the fact that Guit was not obviously not doing anything in practice to deserve more reps than Cassle. The pre-season games are not fair comparisons because Cassel went against better talent but there were plenty of practice reps that would have allowed Guit to overtake Cassell and he obviously couldn't.

So now the QB position looks like this and it actually is pretty Ideal if you take the nakes out.

1) goat
2) 4 years in the system (knowledge is power)
3) Rookie with upside and talent

not sure what else you want.

Cassel is still a bum and the reason why he is going to still be here is because when Gutierrez had his chance to look good against the Giants he blew his opportunity to show he is better than Cassel and so goes it - A lack of competition and experience behind him was Cassel's luck - However if Brady gets hurt and he starts, OUR luck will run out

Brady stay healthy ALL season PLEASE!!!!!

Again my thinking this was option 2.. They are not a fan of both so let Cassel stay on and see what happens in the next couple of days

Chris Simms
joey harrington
brooks bollinger are the ones out there now.. If simms comes aboard then its good bye cassel..

I don't think it'd be very wise to have two backups who've not experienced a single season in the system.

Just admit you were wrong, that Cassel showed he has what it takes.

Yes, of course. They aren't going to cut the future backup.

But let's see if they sign anyone first.

I don't think they will, but if they do, I agree with you choices of possible vet backups, especially Simms. I would put Bollinger second and Harrington a distant third. But mostly, I think hte Pats like what they have.

Thank you for not saying the name of the former Viking-Dolphin QB that so many like that would be such a horrible fit here.

Oh stuff a sock in it! If you aren't ready when you get your chance then you aren't ready...

He didn't look good at all in camp either. He only looked good to fans who listen to mediot spin and who desperately wanted to win when he pulled a few plays out of his ass against scrubs. The rookie can do that too. And so can Cassel - he just knows better than to do that in a pre season first team situation. What Gutierrez could not do is run the starting offense. If he showed he could Bill would have given him some first team reps in the pre season. What they like about him is he's an effort guy. They all are or you don't last around here. The lockstep media all misinterpreted a comment about them liking him as an indication the team liked him more than Cassel... He was the one spooked by the O'Connell signing, Cassel didn't let it effect him. Maybe he makes it to the PS and he gets another shot at holding off O'Connell in 2009. But to do so he'll have to show more capacity to execute at the next level and less to play run abd gun street ball against the other guys roster cuts.

Bill sin't going to sign a veteran QB with no experience in this system. For the record he considers guys veterans after 8 seasons. He also prefers they had some success in any system...

That, very simply, is the reason. Guiterrez didn't provide enough lift over Cassel in pure talent, thus Cassell is the safer bet should the unthinkable happen, given his experience in the system. Plus , they *may* have enough confidence in o'connell as the #2 by end of season, coming in for meaningless games in late december and solidifying the #2 for next season ;)

Cassel is the worst QB I have ever seen in 50 yrs.
Makes no sense to me.

I've thought about this and don't have answer. Except Belichick works in strange ways sometimes, why does he(BB) do other head scratching things WHY ASK WHY.

Because 1st game aside Cassel did not look anywhere near as bad as people have been saying.

Cassel > Gut

Pretty simple logic here. This was really a question of taking the better QB (Cassel) or having 2 developmental QBs (Gut, O'Connell) on the roster and hoping for the best. A lot of the beating Cassel was taking, both on this board and in the media, was just ridiculous and had little or nothing to do with reality.

Now, if BB thinks the grass is greener with someone else who springs loose, Cassel will go by the wayside. Cassel is all about having a backup for this year.
