For all of those that are on the Guyton bandwagon, there is one thing in his favor that has not been mentioned.
Over the years, going back to the Giants days, BB has had good success with udrafted, late drafted, unheralded ILBs that are that way because they are strong in some ways (RUN DEFENSE) but not complete players. Gary Reasons, Steve DeOssie, Ted Johnson--after a drastic decline from his peak years-- Bryan Cox, literrally on his last legs, and others come to mind.

In our defense, the '2nd ILB' really only plays 40-50% of the snaps. A run stopping LB who lacks other skills of a complete LB has a role. For Guyton that role may be the practice squad this year, but I could absolutely see a possibility that he could develop into that 2nd ILB position.

I was sure until the Giants game that Guyton had won a spot. It wasn't that he played badly, but it was tthat Hobson rose up and proved he is a keeper.

I do not think Guyton will make it through and I think he has made the 53. Watching him all camp, the guy was impressive for sure.

As were Slater & Ventrone.

Yup. He would've been drafted had he not had injury questions. I think he's proven himself healthy, so I don't think there's any doubt somebody would scoop him up.

More importantly, I think he's one of the best 53 players out there, so it's a moot point.

Teams just do not get through camp and cut a guy who knows their system and has made their team to take a chance on a guy who went undrafted, spent camp with another team, as a 3rd stringer, and didn't make that team.
Each year there are about 0 or 1 rookies that get cut and are picked up before they can be signed to the practice squad.
I understand the thinking that teams would love to get our cast-offs, but it just doesnt happen that way.
Its not really my opinion, its the facts that it simple almost NEVER happens. Justin Rogers last year was the exception, and that makes him something like the 3rd rookie in 4 years in the NFL to be cut at final cutdown and signed by someone else before opening day.

Happened with Mills, too, don't forget. Other teams aren't as deep as we are all the way down to 53, and while I generally agree with the sentiment you express, 3 guys I'd be worried about not making it to PS are Guyton, Redd and Gutes.

It's very true, but we have a very impressive rookie crop, especially at LB. I wonder if any of these risky cuts makes good trade fodder? Prolly not unless he makes the team, I guess. Still I think there's a big difference between the #54 guy and the #75 guy. And with three necessary ST spots, I don't know that the last spots battle is something Bill won't lose sleep over tomorrow night.

What were the injury questions? Nothing I have read in profiles,etc says anything about his draft ststus being affected by injuries or injury concerns. Can you fill me in?

Absolutely agree. Guyton has the skills and intensity to be a stud ST guy at a minimum. Redd has ideal 3-4 OLB measurables and has shown flashes in the preseason games. Gutierrez would only need to be a top-90 QB in the NFL to be picked up as someone's #3. Not saying they would get picked from waivers, but if you waive them you should be prepared to lose them.

You know, Gutz could get picked up and actually get to play. I like the guy and he may well make strides elsewhere, so if he gets cut and snapped up, I'd wish him well.

Agreed. I basically view Guyton and Redd as just extra draft picks. They were guys that I would've been OK with had we taken in the 5-7 rounds, and I think a lot of write-ups had them both going in that range.

So to have both of them play well in preseason and in camp, what that does is justify the good hype they had coming out of college and help toss aside whatever negatives that led them to becoming UDFAs. I guess I think there's a certain stigma or negative association that comes with being a "UDFA" that lends to one being more likely to make it to the PS, and they've most definitely shed it.
