Maybe BB was not blowing smoke in his praise, earlier in the week, of LB Hobson. When I was listening to the feed last night, I kept hearing his name. In checking the stats, I see that he had 8 tackles.

Guyton had 10 tackles, and I read that he was "all over the field".

Three questions:

1. Was this game enough to keep Hobson from being cut?
2. Did this game solidify Guyton's place on the 53 man roster?
3. If both Guyton and Hobston make the team, to whom do we say "bye bye" (Izzo, for one)?

Izzo is over the hill and also useless as a linebacker.

Totally agree.

I think, while the team has been rather bland in the preseason, there is alot to get excited about. The influx of younger LB talent is one of those things.

Adding the likes of Hobson, Guyton, Crable and Mayo gets me pumped up. Not sure if Redd makes it. I suppose if he does, perhaps Alexander goes? Redd could be a PS candidate. We'll know soon enough.

I cant watch the game till sat replay, so please tell me this. Was the special teams better last night compared to against the eagles? if they were, then im in favor of losing izzo.

IT WAS MUCH BETTER. Hanson did a good job punting and the coverage units were solid. After their performance against the Eagles, it couldn't get much worse, Right? :D

Hobson was solid last night and won himself a job in my eyes.

Guyton is right there with him.

I say we cut ties with Redd and Izzo.

Izzo stays and you'll be glad - SPECIAL TEAMS - SPECIAL TEAMS, remember??

I love Guyton and maybe Hobson stays (although I think Mayo's impressive start may makes Hobson expendable).

Maybe we keep 10......but Izzo is the glue that holds the "teams" together.

This is just my opinion, but I think Mayo's start is irrelevent when it comes to determining whether Hobson has earned a spot or not - Hobson is playing for a shot to become Bruschi's back-up, not for the same position that Mayo has clearly locked down.

I think you're spot on Lockdown.

I'm really not sold on Izzo being safe either. Belichick said the other day that the best roster has the best players, not necessarily the best balance.

I do understand that ST play is hugely important though. Saying that, I have no idea on the positions in ST's, could someone outline them for me and tell me who plays where on the Pats? All I know is that Washington was the 'Gunner' last year.

I think Lockdown nailed it. Hobson has been working towards backing up Teddy, which is a vital job given that Teddy has slowed down over the past couple of years. A competent player to come in and give 54 a rest when needed is critical to the overall success of this teams interior defence. I like Hobsons experience and think that his play will get better as he gets morecomfortable with the scheme (maybe this is just wishful thinking?)
Mayo has won a starting job. He's ready and there's no doubt it. Very few of us saw this a possibility when the 10th pick was made (winning the starting job out of camp) but that's what makes BB and SP so good at what they do.

I'm no expert at these things, but I thought Hobson played solidly if not brilliantly. Generally in position, making the tackle that was in front of him and a few tackles that weren't. You don't see him driving through the line to make tackles in the backfield, like Mayo (although he might have done that a couple of times). On the other hand, you don't see him running all over the place and abandoning his gap responsibilities like the infamous Beisel.

Given that the ILBs need a reliable veteran backup, I think Hobson makes it.

That said, Guyton is at this point a lock for the team. He is simply too good, too fast, too young, and too cheap at a position the Pats have struggled mightily to fill. In practice and in the games he's looked outstanding for a rookie. If he was a 3rd round pick, he wouldn't be underperforming.

Redd, I don't know. That's where you get into the numbers. He's unlikely to contribute this year, so do you keep him for potential?

I do not think Alexander is going anywhere. Too valuable on special teams and his LB play has been decent. I really doubt Hobson stays. He may have had a decent game last night, but his previous games and his training camp were not great according to reports.

From this i see 2 ILB fighting for 1 place . I think they will keep hobson as if we loss some one in the middle they need not move a OLB in and make 2 positions weak .

I agree I can't see how Guyton doesn't make the roster - he's too versatile and performed too well this preseason for there to be any other option - I think a vet, either Izzo or Alexander would be my best guess - is getting cut at his expense.

Redd I thought did well, but I don't think its in the numbers for him - if Woods or Crable had disappointed I think he might have had a chance but as it is right now I think they have to try and practice squad him.

Exactly my sentiments. Hobson after three games not playing much at all. Played this game from the get go,and showed he is a NFL veteran starting LB.

Guyton is the next best rookie ILB on the team after Mayo. If any one makes it he does. He is better than Alexander on both regular D and ST too.

Larry is losing it. He goes this year or retires next offseason.

You can say the same thing about Izzo. That and the fact he is a captain and has been a valuable member of the organization for a long time.

Alexander hasn't been able to improve since he's been here. I still get shivers from his play in the 2006 AFC championship game.

Obviously, none us have anything but an opinion and we're all entitled to them and I certainly respect most all of them here, yours for sure.

Of course looking at Bruschi, is it the position he used to play or the position he moved to over the last couple of years??

My only feeling was, given the good situation of actual LB depth, the young ins (Mayo, Crable, Guyton, even Redd) did so well, that they may move out a Hobson, Alexandar or even possibly Woods).

Izzo on the other hand, to me, is like a starter on S/Teams and I haven't seen anybody step up to show me then can take over his Captain role.

Bite your tongue, lad... :)

I agree. Mayo is the starting WILB. I think next on the depth chart for that is Alexander. Or Seau if we sign him.

Hobson would be backing up - or best case scenario, rotating in - to play SILB behind Bruschi.

As others have pointed out, WILB v SILB isn't all that clear cut in the Pats system, particularly given the nickel packages where you'll sometimes see an LB leave the field and - as of late - Lynch come in for coverage purposes. But in general, until Seau signs, Mayo is the starting WILB on this team, no doubt. Hobson is battling for a strongside position, which plays to his purported strengths a bit more.

With some mild exceptions, it looks like most are in the same ball park on what may happen with the LBs. At least opinions are similar.

Nothing can really surprise. If they do or don't keep Izzo, that won't surprise. If they do or don't keep Alexander, that won't surprise either way. And, if Redd is kept, released, and/or ends up on the practice squad, won't surprise.

Team is in a good position, because it's loaded with options at the LB position. I doubt whoever is cut ends up unemployed very long.
