Seriously. After reading various roster guesses (including my far superior one below, LOL) I think there will be cuts that even the coaches will have a hard time agreeing on. We genuinely have enough talent to make even player #53 a serious contributer this year. It's almost too bad we couldn't dump a special teamer to open one more roster spot, but those guys are locks and big time contributers (well, technically, Hanson was a pretty lonely guy most of last year...).

Can't Welker kick field goals? Looks like Gostkowski is a goner.

Haha, true, he can. Gost is good stuff, for sure.

The following cuts will pretty much be no brainers: Adams, Connolly,
DeVree, Dillard, Fifta, Green-Ellis, Jones, Martin, Sene, Shoate, K. Smith,
Spach, Stupar, and S. Thomas.

Then things become a little more sticky: Cassel or Gutierrez, Ross
Reserve/PUP?, Flynn or Welbourn, Aiken or Slater (Aiken IR?), cut
two of the following Richardson, Spann, Ventrone, Richardson (IR?),
and cut two of the following Alexander, Guyton, Hobson, Izzo, Redd,
Rudd.

Attemps to waive Gutierrez, Guyton, or Redd and sign them to the
practice squad will not work. Might work for Rudd because he was
injured for a while.

Who is Rudd? ;)

I don't see us making these decisions by position evenness, but by best available players, so I think the final cuts become even trickier.

#6 Draft Pick.

Bill has always been a strong supporter of a strong "middle class" of players.......Many teams have great front line players, but then drop off significantly. The Pats have always had players that can step in behind the front line and contribute without a drop off in skills......although that is questionable by many posters this pre season.

Living out of town, and unable to see some of the pre season games? Has he played? contributed? didn't realize he was injured. How? thanks

You're very right though. Everyone says Brady makes the O-Line look better, the LB's make the corners look better, disguise weaknesses, etc... and all of that is why I think that we'll see some Vets lose their jobs to rookies or sophomores this year.

There are 14 there...but I disagree that 4 of those are no brainers. If they are keeping 3 tight ends, they will keep Spach. While I am leaning they keep 2, it's not at all out of the picture that they go with 3. Also, LSmith is injured and if he's IRed, then Thomas, KSmith and Adams are in a fight for the 6th DL spot.
I don't think Fifita is in the running.
Then things become a little more sticky: Cassel or Gutierrez,
That is an option, but if neither is ready to be a backup, might they not cut both and bring in a vet?
Ross Reserve/PUP?
I think PUP is a no brainer...unless they IR him directly.
Flynn or Welbourn
How many linemen are being kept?? Are you thinking 8? I think they will keep 9, especially with injuries. So both could be among the 53.
Aiken or Slater (Aiken IR?)
Aiken could be IRed..but I also think both could be kept. Slater is their best KO return guy and he also can play offense or defense.
cut two of the following Richardson, Spann, Ventrone, Richardson (IR?),
Richardson could be IRed...but I think all 3 could be cut.
and cut two of the following Alexander, Guyton, Hobson, Izzo, Redd,
Rudd.
2 could be cut there easily but also 3 could...Ruud is closer to a no brainer and while I love Redd, I think it would be hard to keep him. Izzo is more a lock and there is no way that he and Aikens are both gone.

I don't think Guyton could make it through...less sure about Redd or Gutierrez. They might..they might not. Unless they think either is a real can't miss prospect, they may risk losing them.

Dogfights are good. Only the strong and best survive. The team deserve's the very best we can field. My only fear is we get rid of somebody and they turn out to be a diamond for someone else. I trust the coach to make my decisions for me. LOL:D:D

This is basically what BB said in his presser a couple days ago....

They would all make it thorugh. On average about 3 rookies cut dont get through waiers every 4 years. I've posted the facts and reasoning many times before, so I wont get into it again.

I actually think you are right...but the poster I was responding to thought NONE would...I have a bit of doubt about Guyton..but...I will defer to your research. If you can point to that...better..(just for future reference..)

Thomas Dimitroff stated earlier that he liked Gutierrez.

With regard to the linebackers, you have Bill Parcells, Eric

Mangini, and Romeo Crennel as possible suitors.

Rudd comes from a family of pro football players. His chances were

diminished when he was injured at the start of camp and he has had

limited time to prove himself. BB is very secretive about injuries.

For that to happen a team would have to cut a guy who made their 53 man roster after being through camp. They would be cutting them in favor of a guy who either was a very late round pick or someone no one felt highly enough to draft. That player, since the day he was not drafted, has learned someone elses system and performed well enough to get cut.
The 'logic' that the Patriots are the best team, so the guys who can't make it are better than the guys who could make someone else's is flawed to begin with. And when you have to cut a guy who knows your system, and you are comfortable with to bring in a guy who you have never had on a practice field, you have never seen in a real NFL game, and wasnt good enough to not get cut, simply isnt something that teams do.
Go back a few years and look at how many rookies were cut, then signed within the next 2 or 3 days. It almost never happens. Almost never being once a year is a lot.

I don't think the Pats will keep three tight ends because none of the
above players is good quality. There will be a tight end on the PS.

Obviously, if L. Smith goes on IR, the Pats need a replacement.
I don't know if Adams or Fifita is eliguble for the practice squad.

Unless Matt Cassel has a break thru performance, I would be
disappointed to see the Pats keep him over Gutierrez. BB has
stated many times that the name of the game is scoring points.
Cassel has not demonstrated that he can put points on the
scoreboard.

My hope is that the Pats keep ten linebackers. This way they
could keep Gary Guyton who can play both inside and out. He
could compete for Bruschi's job next year.

In a typical year, I would agree with you 100%. This is the first
year since BB has been head coach that the Pats have had four
promising young linebackers (don't know about Rudd).

Hopefully, you're right and there will be no waiver claims and
I will have nothing to complain about.

You said this last year, just before at least FOUR rookies we cut on cutdown day ended up on other teams, maybe more. Clint Oldenburg and Kareem Brown were signed by the Jets, Corey Hilliard by the Colts, and Justin Rogers by the Cowboys. Some teams who have little depth are happy to sign players cut by teams who are deep or teams with a track record of drafting good players.

There were rookies we cut the previous year who ended up on other teams, also. Jeremy Mincey and Garrett Mills come to mind. JAX and MIN had no problem cutting a guy who was familiar with their system in favor of these two who they never had on the practice field.

If you follow signings for the entire NFL closely in the few days after cutdown day, you'll see there are a LOT of signings and cuttings and teams tweak rosters.

I'm not saying any of our guys will or will not pass through waivers. No one can tell that ahead of time. But to say that waiver claims are rarely made after cutdown day is just incorrect.

If you cut a guy, you had best plan on losing him. That is the only way to look at it. If you want to keep him for next year and don't want to lose him, keep him or IR him if that is possible.
