Here the announcement on roster moves/cuts, straight from the team:

The New England Patriots placed veteran offensive lineman Stephen Neal on the reserve/physically unable to perform list with a shoulder injury and placed veteran tackle Ryan O'Callaghan on the reserve/injured list with a shoulder injury today. Additionally, the team released fullback Kyle Eckel, cornerback Jason Webster and offensive lineman Ryan Wendell. The Patriots are in compliance with the NFL's 75-player roster limit, which went into effect at 4 p.m. today.

Re: Patriots roster moves

Thanks Chris. On the ball as usual.

Re: Patriots roster moves

Any surprises? I didn't expect Webster or Wendell to be cut already.

Re: When will we know the cuts...

Christopher, do you know the thinking on cutting Webster? Did he not show enough, or is this injury based?

Re: Patriots roster moves

No worries -- all it took was hitting refresh in my e-mail for the last 50 minutes....
reserve physically unable season ending for neal??

Re: Patriots roster moves

Made sense...I thought Webster might have a shot..but..I guess they knew at that point he was having quite an uphill struggle. Eckel?? Wendell?? NO surprise with either...a bit of a surprise with Neal...as I thought they might think he was really ready..or so the reports yesterday. Didn't know about O'Callaghan's injury..(what it was..) but he's been out awhile with it. AND....close to 4:45...the time I said the team would release the details.

A little of both. I was talking with some reporters this morning, and we all came to the same conclusion -- he's getting healthy at the wrong time. If he was injured for a little while longer, they could have PUPped him, and if he had gotten hurt earlier and started to come around, I think they would have kept him. But they just don't have enough to go on with him, and these cuts came at a lousy time for him. I also his release may indicate they are happier with their depth at corner than we may know.

Re: Patriots roster moves

reserve physically unable season ending for neal??
No...6 weeks...and then there is a window so he can return.

No, it sounds like Neal's been placed on the PUP, and O'Callaghan was placed on the IR, which obviously is season ending. This isn't great news.

Neal can come back this year, O'Callaghan can't.

I'm assuming Neal is really close, but the extra time is great news for the freshness of the line and it gives us an extra man to play with for a month and see if he's a keeper (aka, keep a rookie at least bit longer).
