Belichick says Hobson having a solid camp and transitioning well

For what it is worth, Both DeOsie and Smerlas believe Hobson will make the team. Pete Sheppard went a little too far and said he might even start.

Like Bill said in his presser today, they have to use evaluation of past film and past performance as well. That would be the only reason Hobson makes this team, as right now, he's behind Guyton on the depth chart. Personally, I had high hopes for Hobson, I thought he could rotate with Bruschi at SILB on running downs.

What depth chart would that be? The one that BB uses?

There is the very REAL potential that BB has kept Hobson out of the games to let guys like Mayo and Guyton get the reps that BB KNOWS they need. And before you say "Well, why is Bruschi playing" its because Bruschi is the one calling the defensive plays for the team. They need him out there so that he can help instruct Mayo and such.

While Reiss gave Eric Alexander a "vote of confidence," Reiss is also the one who predicted that the Pats would take Beason last year and I believe he had them taking someone else this year. Don't get me wrong. Reiss is the man. But not everything he tells us is the script given by the Pats.

While I hope you're right, I think that's reading too much into the tea leaves. The most straightforward interpretation of where someone plays in practice and in preseason games is where they line up on the depth chart. If that wasn't the case, Rodney would play in the 4th qtr and Mark Dillard would play in the 1st. Moss would play late and Jones would play early. Am I missing an example of where that's happening?

There's no way they should give preseason reps to some rookie UDFA linebacker over a veteran FA, unless the rookie is showing something the veteran is not.

I was a big supporter of Hobson after the signing, and I agree with those who think he has a solid shot at the roster, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's cut.

Belichick saying this is the same as a GM vouching for the manager line of BS.

Let's face it ... is Hobson that bad or is Mayo that good.
Hobson was insurance from a thin crop of FA's ... nothing more.

Yup. He has nothing else to say though. "Well, he's playing with the 3rd stringers and a UDFA rookie has surpassed him on the depth chart, other than that, he's been awesome!"

he must really think the media is stupid eh? (not that hed be wrong)

Obviously not everything Reiss says is gospel but to try and discredit him by saying some of his draft perdictions were wrong is just plain naive.

I really think Hobson will make the team. He's a wily vet, though he has been invisible in the preseason.

Always seemed to have great games against the Patriots when he was with the Jets, though.

Well I'll hope you're right. But it wouldn't have to do with Mayo - Mayo's starting spot is pretty secure as long as Seau is not on the roster. Bruschi, Hobson and Guyton have all been at SILB in the preseason, and Mayo has been WILB, and he's been on the field on passing downs as well. So I don't think Mayo's considerable playing time in the preseason is just for the sake of getting reps - I think we'll see him play the same amount come Week 1 in KC.

As for Guyton - I wouldn't see any reason why Guyton would come in first other than if he was higher on the depth chart than Hobson. He could get as many snaps playing w the 3's. And it has nothing to do with Bruschi being out there to instruct him - Guyton replaces Bruschi at SILB when he comes in.

So I'd like to believe you're right and that there's more to it, but for now, I don't see the evidence. If Hobson were practicing with the 1s or 2s and then coming in for garbage time in preseason, that'd be one thing, but we've yet to see any evidence that Hobson is going to get playing time come regular season.

Wow, the people on this forum are going nuts over the preseason. Honestly, how many snaps has Hobson even played so far? And if it's not many, don't you think that might be because, like the other veterans, he's played in a similar system and doesn't need the playing time? Why subject him to injury if he's got the defense down already, as BB said?

What is that makes him so bad--have you seen him using poor technique, misreading plays, missing tackles, or what? Are you just basing all this hoopla on stats?

He's a veteran player with a proven track record of solid play in the NFL. He may not be having the best pre-season ever--I don't know, since I don't bother watching the preaseason games-- but then I doubt the ability of 95% of people on this board to scout out the linebacking position anyway. After all, we have people on here who seriously believe that Ray Ventrone is going to replace Heath Evans, LaMont freaking Jordan doesn't have a place on the team, and Chad Jackson is the next T.O.

Belicheck isn't going to judge Victor Hobson, a veteran 3-4 linebacker of 6 years, by three or four mediocre performances in the pre-season--not when he has years of coach referrals and footage to fall back on. Let's get a grip here folks. The guy gives us some great depth at linebacker. A lot more than some unproven rookie (read: guyton, redd) who's never played in a single regular season game could.

Go to patriots.com and actually look at the depth chart. Hobson is a second-stringer, and he'll likely be subbing in for Bruschi. In that role, he adds tremendous value to the team.

If he fails in the regular season, we cut him and THEN sign one of those rookies.

Thats the kiss of death,he's done for sure....

Hey Krugman, how long does it take you to get to Boston? Been hoping to move east soon and possible stay on Canadian soil. About 9 hours?

If Hobson can learn to be an OL hes a keeper

There has been some talk that Hobson could be a candidate for trade to KC for Huard. This has come up in discussions about veteran back-ups to replace Cassell. Apparently, KC is short-handed for LB's. BB's late validation of Hobson only reinforces this as a possibility, IMO.

This rumor was repeated by Don Banks, speaking to Felger on Mohegan Sun FSN.

11 hours Halifax to Boston. Have done it many times.

I don't think we know anything about Hobson. How could we?

He has played very little.

Hobson played much better last nite. He got off blocks for the first time all preseason. Maybe I'll be eating some crow for starting this cynical thread :D
