It's time for Dr. Nut (as much as a Dr as Dr Z) projected 53 man roster and I think some will not be happy with this.

3-ST's Paxton, Hanson Ghost

Offense

OL (9) Light , Mankins (just made it), Koppen, Flynn, Kaczur, Welborne Britt,Horst, O'Callaghan (Ross and Neal on PUP)

TE's (2) Thomas Watson - others are JAG's adn we can pick one up if needed at anytime.

RB's (5) Maroney, Faulk, Morris, Jordon, Evans

WR (6) Moss ( on the bubble), Welker, Gaffney, Jackson, Washigton, Aikens

QB's (3) Brady Gut, O'Connnel - Happy trails Matt Cassel.

Total Offense 25
Now we Move to the defense;

DL (6) Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, Wright, Green, Smith

ILB (4) Tedy B, Mayo, Guyton,Seau (Hobson/Izzo stays if Jr. does not come back) It's sad to cut Izzo but I'm heartless.
OLB (5) Varbel, Crable, Woods, AD, Redd

S (4) Rodney, Lynch, Merriweather, Sanders (Maybe Spann, but not right now)

CB (6) Hobbs, Bryant, Wheatley, Wilhite, L.Sanders (also can play safety)Webster

Total Defense 25

That is the 2008 edition of your NE Patriots. What do you think?

Re: Dr.Nut's 53 man roster 8/24/08

agree except I see Izzo over Guyton

Re: Dr.Nut's 53 man roster 8/24/08

I think you nailed it nice work.. Izzo would be a tough cut.

I really like Izzo. But keeping him and letting Guyton or Redd go would be a mistake. Both those guys have shown enough to be players over the next couple of years. If we cut them, they won't make it through waivers and will be on another teams 53, IMO.

Well, you don't seem to have any trouble ditching old friends. :(

A couple of questions.

Who's "Horst"?

Who do you think is going to return kick-offs -- and punts?

(Nice work.)

Horst is Russ Hochstien.

KO and PR- we have Jackson, Faulk (PR), Hobbs, Wheatley , and Welker (PR).

I think we somehow find a spot for Ventrone.

I still think Guyton, Redd, and Slater can make it through waivers. There is a chance that they won't, but fans of every team are talking about similiar late round picks and undrafted free agents on the bubble the same way. The fact is most of those guys do pass through waivers.

I remember a few years back people saying the same thing about Bam Childress, but the guy passed through waivers about a half dozen times before someone picked him up.

Many teams have their own Guytons, Redds, and Slaters on the bubble and many of whom will be cut and pass through waivers. There will also be cut rookies who may actually be even better than these guys for the Pats to pick up.

Personally, I don't think you make roster decisions on whether a guy can pass through waivers or not. If he isn't good enough to make the 53 man roster and contribute now in some way, you can't worry whether or not they can pass through waivers and you take a risk. Promising guys at the bottom of the roster and practice squad have a low success rate anyway because they never get the reps to develop.

The Pats may think guys like Guyton, Redd, and/or Slater are worthy of a spot of the 53 man roster. But I will doubt that whether they can pass through waivers to make it to the practice squad will be much of a factor. Otherwise, they would never had waived guys like Justin Rogers or Kareem Brown last year. Brown was a fourth round pick and had little or no chance of passing through waivers. Rogers, a sixth rounder, had a very good preseason and had a better chance making it through waivers, but not worse than Guyton, Redd, or Slater.

I think we somehow find a spot for Ventrone.

Ventrone has had a very good pre-season but when you look at the other WR's on the roster, he just doesn't fit for the regular season.

I love to see a guy like him make it and he might on another team.

The same goes for Spann.

Redd to the PS. Slater stays. Otherwise Ok. One of Gutz or Cassel goes to IR.

Cassel is a free agent next season. I think if the Pats decide he is off the 53 man roster, he is off the team. I think he will be off the team.

I really don't think either guy is ready to be the #2 QB, but Gutierrez just seem to have more upside than Cassel.

I like the sentiment, but if Dr. Nut is cutting Spann, who plays acceptably against 1st teamers, how do you keep a guy who we've only seen against 2nd teamers?

Rob0729, I do think you make roster decisions on whether a player can pass through waivers. The bottom of the roster won't be active on game day. At the beginning of the season, those last spots are precisely for players who the team calculates will not make it through waivers. They are scouting other teams full time to see their needs and make educated guesses, which is why it's so hard for simple-minded fans like us to predict the bottom of the roster.

With all the holding onto some players and cutting others before and after the first game, teams are obviously scheming around how to sneak guys onto their practice squad after other teams have finalized their rosters. It may only be for one or two players, like Ventrone or Spann or Redd or Guyton, but that's who we're talking about.

Re: Dr.Nut's 53 man roster 8/24/08

As I have said before, one of Morris or Jordan is cut (or onto IR). Depending on how serious Aiken's injury depends on whether Izzo stays or goes.

Guyton and Redd along with Mayo and Crable are the future of the

Patriots. This is probably Bruschi's last year as the starter and Vrabel's

job will be up for grabs after next year.

I agree for the most part, but with three exceptions.

First, I think Slater is kept over Aikens, but this is obviously a tough call.

The other two - I think Izzo and Hobson are both on the roster. Seau hasn't signed yet, so Izzo is still safe, and I think Hobson over either Guyton or Redd (hopefully they'd make it to the PS).

Great work

Aiken was signed as a FA on the basis of what he has done in the NFL during regular season games.

Slater has no position right now and did not dazzle as a KR. I think he makes through waivers and to the PS. Next year or even as a late year replacement, watch out.

Re: Dr.Nut's 53 man roster 8/24/08

IMHO, to believe that Guyton and Redd are one and two years from replacing Bruschi and Vrabel is the worst analysis of any poster this year.

ALL FIVE OF MY DIFFERENCES AFFECT SPECIAL TEAMERS
as would be expected in the last five roster spots.
=========================================
OFFENSE
Almost all of us are fine on the first 24, although some want only four RB's. You give the final spot to Aikin. I give it to the 3rd TE. I'm fine with your choice if Aikin is healthy.

DEFENSE
1) You lead the cherge for replacing two of our top Ster's with two Practice Squad players. I do not beleive that Redd and Guyton will replace Izzo and ALexander.

2) You have Lewis Sanders and Webster as backups instead of the STer's Spann and Ventrone. I have no issue except for the effect on the ST units.

BOTTOM LINE
Are we really going to devestate our Special Teams by cutting Izzo, Alexander, Spann and Ventrone?

Passing through waviers ...

Anyone forgot last year ... (Minnesota coach calling out BB)

Gentlemen's agreements are out the window. Pats cuts are gonna be scrutinized.

There will be no sneaking through - if cut ASSUME gone.
