I went to the game tonight, what a mistake. I'm tired of seeing Ellis get used and abused and "game-planned for" each and every week by offensive coordinators and what's up with Bryant, I thought this guy was a stead Eddie type, I know he never had a lot of picks in his career, but I didn't know his coverage skills have deteriorated that much. Brutal.

To be honest, Wheatley has earned a starting spot, he's better than either one of these two. It's one thing to pass on DRC who has already shut down his side of the field in Arizona, he hasn't seen a pass thrown his way yet, but to think Fernando Bryant is the answer, I don't know man. Goober will be licking his chops if we stroll those two into Lucas Oil in November.

Bah I'm tired of seeing posts bashing Hobbs. It's amazing the hate this guy gets from so many pats fans.

Can we just wait to play some regular season games, where we actually scheme and gameplan for a team before you start misjudging players? It's not a if the patriots just played strict man to man and the db's were blowing it left and right. There are holes in every zone defense ever called/created.

Re: Who's worse Hobbs or Bryant ?

Neither of them are bad. I truly think it's the play calling. Why are these guys playing 10 yards off the receivers every down? It didn't work last year. We have shorter CB that are faster and are better in bump coverage, but we give the other team an easy 5 yard pass and the WRs do the rest. Quite annoying seeing that this game when that was one of our banes last year.

Re: Who's worse Hobbs or Bryant ?

The Pats played a soft zone most of the night. As long as they keep the receivers in front of them, they are doing what the Pats asked. Hobbs did it and Bryant did it other than one time.

I'm with you. I'll take Hobbs any day. I wish coaches would not have him play off recvr so much.

it's way too early to assess either one of these guys this season.(hobbs- post injury)

Yea I'm definitely hoping we see more tight coverages this season as opposed to the last couple but I definitely don't expect it to be that great until at least a few games into the season. We do have quite a few new pieces that need to be worked into it all.

Re: Who's worse Hobbs or Bryant ?

Wasn't Bryant a journeyman CB who did not even make the Lions roster as he was cut and all of a sudden you expect greatness from him?

BB is good when choosing players but not a miracle man and Bryant was a move that was needed at the time,A Desperate move, but filled a hole regardless with little cap worry.

Maybe a Duane Starks Jr. in 2008,maybe not ,But Champ Bailey can rest easy,His role as leagues best CB is not in danger of Fernando taking it away :)

Duane Starks Jr. in 2008

Filled a hole?

To be honest, I would rather see an untested Wilhite or a washed up Ty Law fill that hole, because Bryant has been Jason David part 2 so far. He's been awful, don't paint him any differently, he's been terrible and better improve or we are toast............

Filled a hole when Asante left town - That hole - Which IMO is still pretty big right now - I could only hope Law would come back soon.

Look, based on what we've seen Ty Law is an upgrade over either of these two. Ty and Junior back in town, might be the spark this defense needs to get off it's a@@.............

Bryant started all 16 games for Detroit last season. For his career, he's been a starter in all but 1 of the games he's played. He became a free agent after last season, when he was cut prior to a big bonus and high salary.

Too many facts...:D

Welcome to the Chicken Little Thread

This is great! I didn't see the game yet but the reactions are so predictable around here. Did I come to the right place for the "sky is falling" talk ? I just came from the Homerville " Game three Ups" thread before, excellent contrast.

Seriously though, relax. The corners will play closer this year than they have in the past, once BB gives the green light to start rolling out some of the new blitz packages that Caper brought with him. It's all going according to plan.

Sorry, but Wheatley doesn't start for the first half of the season, at least, as long as Bryant is healthy.

Has Jason David ever played for us? How can Bryant be David part 2?

And yes, filled a hole. We needed a CB before the draft. We got one. You wanted to close your eyes and pray that rookie (who we didn't even know if we were going to draft yet) was going to be ready to fill in as a starting corner?

We're not going to tip our hand in preseason. The coverages called for these guys are not going to let us see what they can really do, and that's a GOOD THING.

Yeah, you're right. DRC will probably be the Defensive rookie AND player of the year based on the two Arizona preseason games. I am also calling for Colt Brennan to be league MVP based on that Hall of Fame game. Kevin Kolb should start over McNabb because, come on, who has Andy Reid trusted more so far this year? That's right, the guy on the field...Kolb. The same is true for Casell (screw that Brady guy, BB obviously thinks he's crap because he hasn't played him yet), David Carr over Eli Manning, and Jim Sorgi over Peyton Manning. All these "regular season superstars" look like chumps right now!

You know we're in pre season right now, right? As in "Before the games mean anything" part of the season.

Other than the couple years we won with Ty Law, name a team this decade who had a "shutdown" corner and won the super bowl?

2001 - NE - Ty Law.
2002 - TB - Pretty sure their WHOLE defense was great, not any one single corner.
2003/2004 - NE - One of these years we had Ty, another we ended up with Earthwind Moreland starting a super bowl.
2005 - Pit - Good front seven, good safety, but who were their CBs?
2006 - Indy - NEVER has elite corners, always serviceable.
2007 - NYG - Some say the secondary was the weak link on that D. We all know what happened.

Would I love to have a Ty Law type again on this team? Absolutely! Who wouldn't? But it's not a necessity, and often these "shutdown" corners demand more money than they are worth (see Hall, D'Angelo). Also, DRC is a friggen rookie. Let's see him play a real opponent in a real game before we declare him Primetime, k?

To answer your initial question, I think neither is worse. I think the Patriots pass rush is currently the worst part of the defense right now.

I think the Pass Rush is intentionally soft right now, personally.

You may be right. A lot of what we've seen on defense so far has been about as simple as simple can be. A lot of three man rushing and a lot of corners playing way off the line. They blitz a little (it was interesting to see Bruschi and Mayo do the ILB crossing blitz last night...it didn't work but it was interesting.) Anyway, I am sure the play at all the defensive positions will obviously improve once gameplanning really takes place.
