I feel like this has been a underrated issue by many on the defense with people talking about age of safeties, linebackers etc. But the corners on this team are awful.

They are giving up huge plays this preseason, and they are not even close to the receivers. Fernando Bryant has been a huge disappointment, while Ellis Hobbs just sucks. He is never even close to a receiver. He is a good nickel and dime package player. Our 3rd stringer is a rookie.

If we don't get a decent corner teams will just throw the ball all day long. I did not think the loss of Asante was a big deal, but now I do since we have no one to replace him.

lmao 10char....

Let's not let Litto Sheppard out of town. A number two now.
Rodney looked decent. The rest awful. Where are all you James Sanders lovers? This guy should be a cut. Wheatley looked mismatched. Hobbs is a nickel back only, period. Well Hobbs and Wheatley are what, 5' 6" (5' 9" ? right) anyway.....Oh yeah, but they can jump. Ask Plex.
Hopefully the Cassel experiment is done now.
Woods looked o.k. and so did Teddy. Seymour was fine but Vince is off. That's it. What is with Alexander? He looked as bad as James Sanders.
Any safeties out there on the wire?
DW Toys

With our front seven and some Dom Capers magic we can make any CBs look good....

Brutal effort by the defense, it is like they are gliding. Lets hope they can flip the switch in two weeks. Right now it looks like you should put Larry Johnson down for 150 yards...

If the Patriots make the playoffs this year I am never watching a pre-season game again.

If our Front seven would help the secondary out, that might be helpful. The front seven definately hasn't been helping out our secondary.

i think something went vastly un-noticed last yr
we had a very mediocre defense

the reason the defense looked good was because the offense was simply amazing, making the opposing team one-dimensional

on paper i thought the defense looked better this yr
but better than "mediocre" is just "decent"
and it could be argued that the biggest losses (asante, seau) out-weighed the greatest gains (mayo, crable, wheatley, bryant)
without Tom in at qb our offense is pathetic we all know that, and we knew that coming in, but what i'm worried about is if the offense isnt amazing just how "decent" will the defense look this yr

I guess we just have to play dime and nickle all the time even on first down.

But seriously, what you see is what you get other than Ty Law being a possibility. we ain't trading for no one.

weren't they like 4th in the NFL last year in total defense?

Bryant is done, to be honest, he should be cut, he has shown zonk, nada this pre-season, he's been Jason David like, freakin ugly............

Hobbs is what he is. His coverage skills are limited, but he's got heart, to be honest, he's a good nickel back and that's all he'll ever be. He's picked on week in and week out. How would DRC look right now ? He's lighting it up in Arizona............

Wheatley is better than either one of these guys and he better be starting against KC.

to get DRC means no Mayo and we'd be tallking about hobson being unproductive

WE could have had DRC and Curtis Lofton or DRC and Dan Connor. DRC is going to be special, real special. Deion Sanders special. We passed on this to take Mayo. I'm hoping Mayo can be just as special.

First and foremost, if Hobbs is never even "close" to a receiver, how do you know he's even in the area? If he wasn't "close" you wouldn't see him on your tv right? Is he out there playing with the cheerleaders or what?

Second of all how do YOU determine that Hobbs "sucks" and is a "good nickel and dime package player"? Explain this in detail please. What the hell makes him suck as a starter but be good as a nickel player, and when have you seen him as the nickel/dime back?

We are not playing to the strengths of this secondary right now, nor should we be in the friggin PREEEEEEEEEEE season. Throughout the year the defensive schemes and gameplans will be more tailored towards the strengths of our defense. BB and the coaches are more focused on the fringe players in the pre-season. Players that are very close can win/lose a job in the preseason.

Sure we have not had many bright spots this pre-season, but there are a lot of guys not playing. It's extremely difficult to judge a secondary without taking into account the entire defense, as well as the schemes.

Just relax a little bit, and wait for the season to start. Every year it's the same thing with people exaggerating about how something is terrible, yet at the end of the year there is nothing that proves it.

Is this a serious statement? Do you actually expect the patriots to NOT make the playoffs? I mean really????

CB is something that i have been complaining about. The problem with relying the front 5 is we will loose if the front 5 doesn't deliver or hurts bad.

If they had a half decent pass rush and was able to put some pressure on the QB it would not be so tough on the CB's

It couldn't possibly be the D playing soft n the preseason, could it?

No f'in way!
/sarcasm

WAKE UP PEOPLE!

the CBs are a weakness but we knew that before the preseason....

I think they will, it just goes to show how futile the pre-season is.

Listen closely..........It's only a P-R-E-S-E-A-S-O-N game. All this team needs is to rest the starters and an opponent like KC at home to open the season and you'll see a pass-rush when all of the starters are playing full-tilt!

Considering the Pats have been playing a soft zone defense all preseason that is designed to give up the short play and not the long play, I don't see the secondary as big as a problem. They have Hobbs and Bryant playing so far off the ball sometimes that I think they are playing a prevent defense.

It is the preseason for criminy sakes. We haven't had our complete first defense play a single down all preseason (only Seymour, Wilfork, Mayo, and Bruschi have played every game with the first team). There has been no scheming.
