The Colts are reportedly unable to control the swelling in Peyton Manning's surgically repaired knee, and whenever Manning goes through extensive movement more swelling results.

The National Football Post's Mike Lombardi, who also writes for SI.com, calls this a "HUGE concern long-term and short-term" and that when Manning is hit, more swelling is inevitable. Lombardi says he was initially convinced Manning would be back for Week 1, but now has doubts. Practicing next week would be encouraging, assuming Manning can keep going.

I'm not a Colt fan, but Manning is a great player. These injuries SUCK. I hope that it doesn't hurt his career long term. It seems that a lot of great players have been afflicted by the injury bug lately. :(

I'm not buying it. I bet he plays all 16 games and puts up huge numbers.

He plays 14 games, sits out the final two and once again comes up short and rusty in the playoffs.*

I think it has basis in fact - Lombardi has sources - although the severity could be off. I think Manning's days of huge numbers are gone, though, as I don't think M. Harrison will ever be the same. If he plays he'll be a great QB, though, no doubt; the question is how will his knee deal with the rigors and hits of the NFL.

i hope he is okay but i also wouldnt put it past polian and dungy that they might be just playing this up a bit. remember how harrison was supposed to return last yr and ended up missing so many games. they might be pulling a reverse floating rumors for the bears and others that manning may not play.

Damn knee injuries.

It's time for robot players, I think.

What Dungy did last year with Harrison ridiculous, yet not once did he catch any heat from it.

He was a "game day decision" for the Pats game, pathetic.

There are always complications from surgery, i predict Manning only misses 4 games at the most.

Just as a hypothetical, does anyone see the Bears beating the Colts week one even without Manning?

No the Colts will be unstoppable this year and win the SB. Don't you read ESPN?

I wouldnt be surprised if the Bears beat them without Manning, you have to remember Manning isnt the only big name player trying to return from an injury. Freeney, Sanders, Harrison have all been dinged up a bit...

I would say no because Sorgi has been solid and he is ready to start. But you never know what can happen on any given sunday.

Sometimes I forget about the Colts, in a league full of arrogant loud mouths their quiet strength sometimes goes unnoticed.

I really wish the Bears had some redeeming quality about them besides Devin Hester. Regardless I'll be rooting my ass for them that Sunday night.

Well I bet Polian will pay up and make the officials draw flags everytime manning gets hit.

Questionable means a 50% chance of playing. Dungy said that Harrison had a 50% chance of playing, 99% chance of sitting out, 40% chance of retiring, 70% chance of joining the DSRL and a 40% chance of meeting with Belgian arms dealers.

Dungy wasn't cheating. He just isn't down with math.

I hope he's ready to go in week 1. I don't like experiencing success at the expense of an opponent. Particularly one I respect, yet dislike intensely. Actually, I don't dislike Peyton as much as his sanctimonious boss, Jesus Dungy.
