WHISPERS BEGIN REGARDING MERRIMAN’S CONDITION

Posted by Mike Florio on August 21, 2008, 12:22 p.m. EDT

In the wake of a report that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman visited with renowned orthopedist James Andrews regarding Merriman’s knee, we’re hearing that there is quiet concern within the organization that Merriman could be done, after only four NFL seasons.

Merriman had arthroscopic knee surgery during the offseason. He made the trip to Alabama to see Dr. Andrews because of persistent pain in the knee. (Curiously, there’s a conflict between the two major San Diego papers regarding the identity of the doctor who performed the procedure. The North County Times says that it was Andrews. The Union-Tribune claims that it was team physician David Chao.)

I hope Merriman can get this taken care of. He's one of the best LB's in the game and he's so young. This would be a major blow to one the best defenses in the NFL.

Re: Shawne Merriman's Career In Jeopardy

These are the kinds of stories PFT often misses badly on. When they announce a signing before anyone else (like they did with Lynch), they're usually right on the mark. These speculative things, not so much.

"Whispers"

about as good as "sources"

Merriman is the best young LB in the game and hope he can continue,It would be a shame to see such talent wasted away with an injury at his age.

If it were not for the steroids issue he might have been the most respected LB in the league

Bones, cartiledge and steroids are not a good mix. Unless your the one selling them.

Anytime you hear an athletes name followed by "visited Dr. James Andrews" it's never a good thing. That guy is like the fat lady of sports careers.

I read this on a NFL forum:

I actually have some bad news for Chargers fans. According to ESPNEWS, Merriman has been quoted in saying that he might be out for the rest of the season. Worst case is that he announces his retirement. I expect him to be out at least 2 months. He has to consider that fact that his season might be over.

Could anybody confirm this?

I don't know, but GOD I wish we owned their 2nd pick in next years draft.

Wow that makes things a lot easier.

Er I mean, that sucks. Really classy-, er talented young player who did things the right way.

I have a different take........as Marv Albert would say "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS".....I hope LT blows out his knee next........Let's hope Gates is not the same this year too.........Stay classy San Diego......

Re: Shawne Merriman's Career In Jeopardy

I'll be following the thread on the Chargers board regarding this.

PFT told us Moss is on the bubble three times last off-season.

Heh. Thanks, Mr. Rationality.

Losing Merriman would be a huge blow to the Chargers' defense.

I certainly don't root for a career ending condition, but if Merriman does happen to hang 'em up, I won't feel bad in the slightest. Helps the Pats, hurts the Chahgahs, and it's hard to feel bad when a multimillionaire prick doesn't have the chance to make more millions.

merriman's a one dimensional player. great pass rusher. cant defend the run though

You guys are the same ons that call people classless when they wish injury on Brady.

This sucks both for Merriman and the league. He's a supremely talented player and if his career is indeed over than it is a blow to the overall talent level in the league. Yes, the Patriots benefit, but it's still not cool.

Never hated Merriman even after the rally thing. It would be sad to see such a talented players career get cut so short but that's the nature of football.

Sad news. I hate to see a talented football player like Merriman be forced into premature retirement. Wish him all the best whatever happens.

Wow, figures your a Marv Albert fan. Do you have a signed copy of his panties? I noticed your a fan of Morgan, who was part of a great tandem with Stingley. Kind of sucks when an athlete loses his career due to injury. Your calling San Diego classy?

I'm not wishing death on Merriman. I'm not wishing his career would end. I don't even wish injury upon a player. All I'm saying is that, after how he screwed over his agent on Draft Day, after his steroid use, his stupid Lights Out dance, and all of that, he had a little bit of bad karma coming to him. So while it would be a shame if a guy of his talent were to miss time, whether it's a day or a season, I won't be devastated over it. I'm just being honest.
