Pats sign C/G Mike Flynn, waive Ade Jimoh

Brady and Moss are only as good as the protection allows. Given the backup QB situation, what kinds of risks are you willing to subject Brady to? Just sayin'.

This also jas to do with the Yates injury...they NOW have 10 linemen...Koppen, Connolly at C...Mankins, Wendell, Sene and Flynn ay G, Britt, Kaczur, Martin and Welbourn at T...they needed to make a move with Yates and Hochstein out...I think those inside are injured a bit worse...not good.

Ade Jimoh has been waived according to PFW in Progress.

And they just featured Jimoh in the Patriots Football Weekly's Getting to Know feature.

Flynn's agent seems to think Flynn will be a starter:

The Ravens have won a Super Bowl, you might be misinterpreting,
Flynn’s time in Baltimore began as a gritty lineman that was signed off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad on Dec. 3, 1997. After seeing spot duty at guard for the next two seasons, Flynn cracked the starting lineup at right guard during the 2000 training camp.

He never dropped from the first string during the Ravens’ magical run to the Super Bowl XXXV title that year, a crucial cog at both guard and center that helped pave the way to 2,199 rushing yards (fifth in the NFL). The emotional leader never dropped from the first string for the next eight years, bolstering Baltimore’s running and passing attacks throughout his career.

Re: Pats sign C/G Mike Flynn

He didn't think he would be cut by the Ravens @ only $2 million per year. However, he did have a gig lined up with the Ravens in the media area.

Also, he is extremely smart financially and doesn't have to play anymore. However, if the right situation came into play, he could sign.

I really think people spend too much time contemplating moves being made at the bottom of an 80 man roster. Most of these moves in recent weeks will have absolutely no bearing on the final 53 man roster.

Flynn has starting experience so he may stick around, but he was out on the street for a reason. He could very well be out on the street again next week.

Doing a little research, it seems like that reason may be that the Ravens just wanted to get younger and cheaper at the position, rather than Flynn no longer being able to play. Hopefully I'll find a few more insights on the matter if I keep searching, because Flynn was good for a long stretch with the Ravens, and it would be nice if he could play well for the Patriots, even just as quality depth at the interior positions.

The OL is certainly a concern because of lack of health at the position. So I don't think it's overanalyzing at all to assess what potential impact/contribution Flynn could have on the position.

Flynn might be an excellent C/G, but he may no longer have the stamina to play as long per game as the other starting OL.

Oh...you are talking about the Jimoh move?? THAT is teh bottom of the roster...If you THINK the Flynn move is "the bottom of the rister" you really don't understand what is going on.

That is the problem - who is starting? Excuse me - who is healthy enough to start that does not really, really suck?

All Pats fans should be concerned with the health of an o-line that was basically pushed around in the SB. The O-line pass protection is crucial to the Brady's well-being - meaning the Pats success.

Re: Pats sign C/G Mike Flynn

Indeed! But in this case I did. Have I shamed my good name? :D

I think it's like Usain Bolt. If you're that far out in front, you can afford to slack off a bit in the last ten metres. ;)

Re: Pats sign C/G Mike Flynn

Back after a few days in Newport. Here's my take on Flynn, he is smart (as a C, he made great line calls and adjustments) and versatile, he has decent size/strength. Now he isn't particularly fast or athletic and he lacks great footwork but he is a solid technician and has been a solid starter throughout his career. No one is saying he is a long term answer but as far as this year goes and at this point in time he is a great option. Personally I like old grizzled vets on the O-line, unlike the D-line where youth speed/stregth are better, so just like the Welbourn signing I like this move.

Re: Pats sign C/G Mike Flynn

Flynn is a very fortuitous option if he can stay healthy. This was a matter of the Ravens cutting some salary and the Patriots being a good option for the former New Englander. This is NOT a "bottom of the roster" signing. He will see serious minutes, if healthy - especially given the state of the OL.

Ooh. Aah.

OK, if he is so good, ready to start, why did the Pats sign him after some guy named Sene and Welbourne?

It's possible the transaction - Flynn for Jimoh - is very balanced.
Like everyone else, I'm sure hoping he is the solution.

But the Pats turned to Stokes, Welbourne, Connolly, and Sene before Flynn.

Here is the reason that Flynn was "out on the street".

http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Players/Active/Jason_Brown.aspx

The Ravens had a good, young, cheap center in Brown. He came in when Flynn was injured and showed he was a player.

Flynn will be a nice backup and will compete for the starting RG spot until Neal is healthy enough to play. He is also an experience center, just in case.

I think this is a good signing.

I feel the same way, though at least with this guy there is the illusion that *maybe* the Pats talked him out of hanging it up completely vs. a stiff like Welbourne who was looking for a check and couldn't find one until Pats came knocking.

Either way, it doesn't matter what average body they plug in, as the line should suffer from a complete and total lack of continuity to start the season.

Best case scenario is Light is back Week 1 and the line is only dealing with adjusting to a new starter (whoever that may be) at RG.
