... because I'm sure he's gonna be the No. 1 receiver in their system. I'm sure they're not expecting much from him.

So are we desperate for signing Tyson DeVree?

So are we desperate for signing Tyson DeVree?

If Devree is a good blocker as a TE than maybe we ARE looking desperately for a blocking TE - Very possible

Thomas and Watson do not excell at that,Maybe DeVree does - But I doubt he stays anyway - He may be the type of guy that gets signed and released repeatedly like that poor schmuck last year (forgot his name).

Unlike the Brett Favre signing, I don't see this as an act of desperation. This is a smart move, trying to find undervalued players. If Brankins becomes even a #3 receiver it would be a big success.

Man,The Jets must be desperate to get some depth for the almighty Favre - Now they dig deep and into the Arena League to sign Larry Brackins,a WR with nice stats there but hey, we are talking about the freaking amateur football arena league - Its a bit of a stretch and a desperate move if you ask me.

It says that originally he was a 5th round pick by TB-it would be interesting to know what the deal was there and how/why he ended up in the arena league vs some other NFL team.

I remember when Brackins was drafted (by Tampa I think), many called him a huge steal.

If he had stats in the NFL like he had last year in the AFL he would be on his way to a HOF career,But I laugh at Arena players who think they will continue to dominate in the REAL league- Very Rarely does it happen expect maybe guys like Warner in Arizona

No Arena League player thinks they will dominate in the NFL compared to the AFL. That's just absurd. Every player, especially one who is coming from the AFL or Canada, just wants a chance to show that they can even play in this league.

* Just recently the NFL's increasing interest in arena players was being discussed- I want to say it was mentioned by Kraft during an interview, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it was being discussed in the context of finding talent and talking up the NFL.

Maybe Mangini thinks this player's coachable? In that case, I'd only ask if Mangenius fancies himself the man to do it? God I hope Miami nails their *:D

Wasn't Doug Flutie in the Canadian League for quite awhile? Didn't we pull him from there too? My take is that the NFL would LOVE to develop the arena league. Players that are GRATEFUL to get a chance in the NFL vs some of the rookie top round picks who hold out for Payday.

I can definitely see advantages to tapping into the arena/ Canadian leagues. Depends what you're looking for in a player I suppose. Isn't arena built on speed more or less? Athletic type play? I dunno-I've only seen occasional highlights.

And most of them can't stick around, although like I said,Kurt Warner is the poster boy for an AFL player trying to succeed in this league -

Some will make it and do well but its a small percentage and definately tough to make the adjustment.

I have a local Arena Football team whose stadium is practically in my backyard (just a few minutes away) and the people around here LOVE it,but if you have seen a game in person it would be hard to compare real type NFL gameplay to it - Its definately fast paced and fun to watch though.

Nineteen former Arena League players are on N.F.L. rosters, including receiver Kevin Swayne of the Jets, receiver David Patten of the New England Patriots and, most famously, quarterback Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams.

Old article but......

So like I said, are the Jets "desperate" for signing an star AFL player? You make it seem like the Jets are putting all their hopes that this is the guy to lead them to the promised land.

That Patten guy made a few key catches.

Sorry, but I see no desperation in this move. It is a low risk, high reward type of move. I doubt he will ever become much of an NFL player, but if he does it will be a huge steal for the Jets. If he doesn't, the Jets really didn't risk anything.

Jets sighn retired, coming off injury, AFL, and Arena guys, mostly undrafted FAs this time of year. I think the idea is to fill openings because of injuries or players just not working out.

I thought most teams did this.:)

I don't think it was a bad idea in picking him up - Who knows?

I'll bet the Jets wished they picked up Warner back then

Wow, getting ahead of ourselves, are we? AFL players are definitely not "amateurs"--they are professional athletes. They might not have made the NFL, but to assume that he's a complete scrub is exceptionally presumptuous.

You better keep your mouth shut until we see what he can do--we don't need to jinx ourselves this early. You never know what guys are capable of in the NFL until they come out and play. Kurt Warner was an "amateur" AFL player and Ricky Williams was a good NFL runningback who got shut down by the "amateur" Canadian teams. These guys are not scrubs.

He was probably signed to play special teams. If he turns into a great ST player, then this was a solid move by the jets.
