Is he eleigible?

I was wondering why Gutierrez didn't see any action last Sunday night? Could it be that Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli think they can get Gutierrez through waivers and onto the Practice Squad easier than O'Connell (a 3rd Round Drfat Pick)?

I also remember that Gutierrez played some special teams last year and that he was the #2 QB with Cassel as the #3 (emergency) QB. Gutierrez is almost TE size and speed. At 6' 4" 230, he is only 18 lbs ligher than Dave Thomas. He is also faster I believe.

Just a thought.

Yes, he would clear waivers.

I cant see anyone picking up either Gut or Cassel if cut(besides the jets for a couple weeks...).
Half joking, half conspiracy theory:

lets see Cassel/Gut stink up the rest of the preseason and Gut gets on the PS, Cassel is on the "shadow roster" saving a spot for a more useful/utilitarian player.

I think even Dimitrioff(ATL)realizes that he has Ryan, Harrington, and that other guy....and that "developing" a guy QB behind Ryan is not a priority....
For that matter, why the hell are WE doing it?? Some teams have a successful history of doing this(GB, SF), we arent one of them. TB excluded....

Why would we put him on waivers? Why would we risk losing him?

He didn't play because he has some injury that kept him from practicing.

Also, It seems like they wanted Cassel to play a lot. There are a lot of reasons for that in preseason, not all of which mean they want to retain him.

There's a QB Poll thread where you can go on record with your predictions. Barring a serious injury to Cassel, I think that Gutz will be cut, will clear waivers and will be signed to the Pats PS. Keeping 4 QBs as some fans expect would be roster insanity with all the other legitimate developing talent in this summer's camp.

and why do think that? Alot of people on this board think he's better than Cassel. I'm just curious what your thinking here.

I guess I would just put myself in the shoes of another team's GM. Why bring in a QB onto your 53 man roster who doesn't know your system, was un-drafted and has 1 career completion.

I am sure fans of most teams over value their players but really what is the big deal? He seems highly replaceable.

I can't imagine the #2 job is nailed down, so why speculate? I'm sure Cassel could clear waivers too.

Cassel has got a big showcase so far. I'm anxious to see what Gutz can do.

I think someone may pick up Gutierrez. Could the Jets grab him just to screw with the Pats? Would Crennel since he probably knows that the Belichick likes the guy? Would Chicago or San Fran since they barely have starting QBs and Gutierrez may have as much of a shot of being their QB of the future as the guys on their roster?

I don't think it is a guarantee that Gutierrez could pass through waivers. I don't think it is a guarantee that he won't either. Tough to tell because you never know who is happy with their #3 QB and who isn't.

I still think there is a decent chance the Pats carry 4 QBs whether or not they keep Cassel. I think the Pats really like Gutierrez, but I don't know if they trust him enough to be their #2 QB.

I think he might...and that COULD happen...but is Cassel ready to be the backup? I doubt they will keep 4..so unless cassel is ready, they could cut both and pick up a vet. Guts is eligible for the PSquad..he could end up there. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 2 games.

I think even Dimitrioff(ATL)realizes that he has Ryan, Harrington, and that other guy....

Funny how "that other guy" (Redman) passed through New England and never made a semblance of an impression. But there he was, starting games for the Falcons last season. And another Patriots camp reject, J. T. O'Sullivan, is penciled in to start for the 49ers.

They're 2 excellent reminders that many QBs take the long, slow road to NFL success. Redman and 0'Sullivan are 8 and 6 years removed from their respective draft days. (Yes, Chris Redman was taken in the same draft as Tom Brady!)

But back on topic...I think Gutierrez probably would clear waivers, but it would hardly be a shocker if somebody gave him a shot.

Based on what Adam Schefter had to say about Gutierrez, the Pats may not want to risk putting him on waivers to get to the practice squad. But I don't know if he is ready for being the #2 QB. If that is the case, how do they only keep three QBs? Do they cut O'Connell and hope he gets to the practice squad (which is doubtful) or IR one the two?

Other than those two options, I don't see how the Pats don't keep 4 QBs.

It's assumed because Cassel has been #2, he's better than Gutierrez.

Gutierrez actually won the job at Michigan, a very competitive school (just ask Brady) before getting hurt.

also...

Lettered in football at DeLaSalle High School ... never lost a game at DeLaSalle ... he went 252-of-456 for 5,032 yards and 64 touchdowns, with just nine interceptions ... his high school quarterback rating was 190.4, and it was 206.7 as a senior ... tossed five touchdowns in the CIF North Coast 4A championship ... was ranked amongst the top 100 high school recruits by both SuperPrep Magazine and Rivals.100.com.

So who's the better prospect?

Cassel has the better arm as far as making all the throws, Gutierrez is younger.

And all this matters at the NFL level, why? Ryan Leaf had greater NFL potential and college credentials than MattyG. will ever have.

the earlier we can do it, the better everything is. There is no reason to drag this thing forever.

Why are you (or anyone) even entertaining the thought that O'Connell will be cut?

I don't see any way they cut a developmental, third round quarterback the same year they drafted him unless he showed absolutely nothing in training camp and practice or did something horrendous off the field. Neither has happened and a rare physical talent at quarterback is not the type of player that clears waivers. I doubt he'd get past the Dolphins, even.

It makes no sense at all.

You're right. Because of Ryan Leaf no one should ever draft anyone #1. Impeccable logic.

I'm just saying Gutz deserves a chance to win the job, but since Ryan Leaf failed all arguments mean nothing now.

Not that its not impressive, but what one did at high school is irrelevant. There are many college qb's who were great and led their teams to undefeated seasons or national championships:
Tommy Frazier
Gino Terretta
Danny Wuerffel
Chris Wenke
Tony Rice
Jason White
Heath Shuler
Andre Ware
David Kingler
Rick Mirer
