Is anyone listening to Colin Cowherd? He is admitting that he is a John Lynch guy, but he see's this move as a desparate move by BB.

He feels our back 7 is too slow for the Colts, Cowboys, Giants, etc.

I e-mailed Cowherd to let him know of Lynch's role as a S/LB and the fact that we have added a lot of speed at LB and in the secondary.

I like Cowherd and enjoy his show a great deal. But, this is as bad as the day he argued that Roethlisberger was a top QB in the NFL and then argued about how there are so few QB's. IMO this is why he views Roethlisberger so highly, there are so few QB's.

I'll be interested to see if he replies to me e-mail, esp. if he mentions it on air.

Not in the car yet, but I like Cowherd. He generally is spot on. But college football is his strength, he'll be the first to admit. His knowledge of the pros isn't nearly as deep. Though I'd say the bulk of the national media isn't going to know enough about the Pats schemes to know how they plan to use Lynch. In their defense, it is tough to follow all 32 teams that closely.

I don't think Cowherd understands that Lynch, while listed as a safety, is going to be brought in primarily on running downs. I'm happy with that as it seemed to suit him better in Denver last year. He's definitely lost a step and is a liability in coverage. However, the guy can still hit with the best of them so it makes sense to move him up to the LOS with the LBs to take a running back's head off.

I trust in BB. Colin Cowhead can pontificate all he wants he has NO idea what Bill will do with Lynch, and neither do we until it's revealed.

I doubt you'll get a response you're happy with. Writers that have their act together are more likely to respond well... but then again, you wouldn't be writing to them. If he responds at all, he is likely to be overly defensive about you pointing out that he is talking out his A_S_S

I heard the tail end of his Patriots talk. I don't know how signing John Lynch is a desperation move if he was signed as a back up and only a situational player. I also don't know how the back seven got slower. Meriweather and Mayo are upgrades in speed. If Hobson can learn the playbook at replaces Bruschi as the starter, so is he.

I think you can question the Patriots' secondary, but argue the back seven got significantly slower?

Cowherd said that Mayo won't even play, that BB never plays rookies... Seymour???

He argued for a second that you can't make a S into a LB, too small, etc. He never mentioned coverages, disguises, etc. He left it at that...perhaps to avoid admitting his mistake.

Re: Colin Cowherd...anyone listening? no.

I don't think this is a desperation move by BB, but you can see what an outsider would say so. Lynch has been a free agent for a few weeks now, and the Pats bring him in right after Tank gets hurt.

I wonder what he would have said if the Colts or some other team had signed him?

I seem to remember Cowherd harping on spygate last year, as though he had a bone to pick with Bill and the Pats. This is probably more of the same....and how can filling a need be a desperation move. Williams gets IRed, we have a need, we sign Lynch to fill that need.

Don't listen, but my guess is he got his opinion from this NFL.com headline:

"Desperately seeking help for wounded secondary, Pats turn to Lynch".

Talk about melodrama. Who wrote that tag, the editor of "Jets confidential"?

Nonsense.

Good job emailing him, because you are right. When you add this much DB/LB speed in the offseason, and then hear somebody muse that their "back 7 is too slow", it makes you question all his takes. They're clearly faster than the team that entered the SBowl at 18 and 0. We'd be interested if he gets back to you.

Is he suggesting that Lynch is being being brought in as a starter?

I was under the impression he was replacing a backup/depth position at S & LB that opened up when Tank Williams went on IR.

If he deems Lynch as the best S that we have and is tagging him as a starter, then he's right. But if one is looking at Lynch as sitting somewhere further down the depth chart, that's a pretty good move.

First off who the hell is "wounded" outside of Williams? Every one of the other db's has been spotted in camp participating at one point or another. This is the same crap with Moss last season and how did he do in his first game?

The training camp rosters have been cut down so much that why kill your players especially after playing 23 games last season and playing well into Jan and Feb. Belichick is simply resting guys knowing how long the season is. Like he is always quoted as saying " He's getting his guys ready for a 16 week season".

Exactly. I just got an email from my friend this morning criticizing the move. It's just classic outsider kneejerk reaction. "Hey, the really old defense just got older!" People have their cursory perception and that is their reality.

To anyone following the team, the signing obviously makes a ton of sense as a replacement for Tank.

Lynch, as a safety, is a liability in coverage because it requires more range and potentially a match up against a wide receiver. We have yet to see how Lynch "the LB" does in coverage, generally against TEs and RBs in a smaller zone.

A slow safety can be a pretty fast linebacker.

Some things to consider here:

He can't even get close to knowing as much about the Pats as we do, his job can't afford him that kind of time.

We don't know HALF as much about the Patriots as BB and co. since the game plan and the PUP and all of that is cloaked in mystery and will likely stay that way.

Lynch has lost a step in passing downs if he has to play them all game. He's not an OLD MAN, just aging in terms of racing around the football field. Used sparingly, he can still be effective in coverage and will make for another way BB leaves opposing O's feeling uneasy.

Finally, I can't imagine BB, or any of the defensive coaches being even faintly bothered by taglines like that on NFL.com
If that makes other teams feel safe, awesome, although you have to think most every other team out there is NOT buying those lines. And most of them will think twice about cutting solid players that fit NE needs. Just as most of us are sure Oakland is going to look stupid for a second year in a row at our hands, here's hoping we get to make the Broncos queasy too.

Here is a great take on the signing from Matt Bowen at www.nationalfootballpost.com. If you haven't bookmarked this site, I advise doing it now:

Lynch, Patriots Seem Like Perfect Match

I like the signing of John Lynch by the New England Patriots. Yes, Lynch has lost a step and is on the backside of his great career in the NFL, but head coach Bill Belichick knows what he is looking for when it comes to personnel. The Patriots are pretty set at the safety position with Rodney Harrison, James Sanders, and Brandon Meriweather, but the addition of Lynch will allow Belichick and his defensive staff another tool to play with. I would expect Lynch to see around 15 snaps a game, maybe 20 depending on the opponent. Look for Lynch to be used when the Patriots insert an extra safety into the game, sending a corner to the sidelines. This will give New England an extra player in run support (what Lynch does best), and allows them to counter teams that line up in “Tank” formations (2 TEs, 2 RBs, 1 WR), which has become an offensive rage in this league.

Unless injuries surface, don’t expect Lynch to line up on the field on 3rd down passing situations. However, he does give New England more possibilities on defense. Safeties who can play the run consistently in this league are vanishing at a record pace. What coaches want in today’s game are guys who can fill holes in the line of scrimmage on first and second down, and then man up the slot on 3rd down. Long gone are the days when safeties played like an extra linebacker in the box. To understand this, look no further than the Cowboys training camp and Roy Williams. His play has been reduced for this exact reason: he has become a liability in passing situations. This is why Lynch, who was going to experience the same fate in Denver, asked for his release to sign with a championship caliber team. Lynch knows his role going into Foxborough, so why not do it with a team that is favored to head to Tampa this year?

If there are two things that Lynch brings to the table, one is his ability to play with a physical attitude, and the other is his ability to tackle (a lost art in the NFL). There is something still to be said about guys who can come downhill hard and tackle. Add in the fact that Lynch is a natural leader in the locker room, and the Patriots have another veteran guy who will only add to their dominance.
