It seemed like a lot of people were down on Woods this Spring. When Darth Bill compared one of the draftees to Woods, a lot of folks said it was just a physique comparison. Now it looks like Woods is primed to start being a real factor and if I had to wager, I'd say a game-changer.

Anyone else rethinking their spring position on Monsieur Woods?

back up and special teamer and nothing else

Woods is definitely in the mix. you need a little different talent and size to play R OLB and L OLB. In the right mike vrabel is excellent and woods will be very good as you are mostly engaging a RT or FB or TE.

Crabel can be a 3rd down rush end and is good in droping back because he is lean and tall. IF he bulks up he will lose speed which will negate his coverage skills. But he can be the crucial RUSH L OLB with a little weight.

also , i want to see jarvis green in the end in 3rd down with Crabel dropping into coverage.

I still have a hard time with the SB with that fumble lost and why he wasn't in there on that last drive as pass rush help could have been used.

I think people were very unfair in saying Woods was not coming along.

I think he has done nothing but get better since he has gotten here and it appears as though he is making a big leap this year as opportunity presents itself.

IMO he will be the third outside LB in the rotation this year.

I think a lot of people were unfairly down on him for the missed fumble recovery in the SB. But if you actually tortured yourself and watched it you may have noticed it wasn't as bad as it seemed. the ball was under his belly maknig it seem like he had possesion and most people think the ball was under him and there is no reason not to come up with it. And to some degree I agree with that but if you look closely it appears as though he is unaware that the ball wound up under him like that and than people start jumping on the pile and he loses it. It sucked sure and he probably should have had it but he never really had possesion so he didn't really lose it.

Wow, I'm surprised at these responses. After his failed fumble recovery I wanted to murder him. But everything I've seen out of the kid over his career is that he's always been willing to work his butt off and the coaches have always wanted to give him a chance. Besides the fumble, he has made the most of almost all of his opportunities, and I saw starting OLB potential in that first game (but I won't get ahead of myself, it was just one preseason game).
I find it foolish to say "back up and special teamer and nothing else."

I won't even address the SB fumble. I was at that end of the field celebrating when everyone saw the Pats had recovered that ball. Oops.

Anyway, I'll admit I'm coming around. I had PW marginalized as a ST and no more, but he showed some good burst off the edge in Baltimore, but again, just the preseason.

I'd still love to see some of those pressures become sacks, for the whole LB crew, not just Woods. It just seems the Pats lack that "Closer" on the edge who can get the quick pressure AND the sack. LBs always seem to just get a hand on the QB who then steps up and gets off a pass.

It took Bruschi a few years to come into his own...

It took McGinest a few years

Vrabel didn't start in Pittsburgh

I like Woods' development, its going uphill.

Like his development. Each year does a little more and looks a little better. Hopefully he will be in the rotation on the outside this year. I compare it TBC, hopefully better. But he has worked hard and has learned well.

I never really was down on him though.

Woods looked pretty good in the opening preseason game, but I reserve my judgement on the guy. Can't draw too many conclusions based on one preseason game.

I personally had no real strong feelings either way about the guy going into the preseason. I hope he can be a rotational guy.

I think Woods is playing faster, which may be because he is starting to get his assignments down. I think we need more than 1 preseason game to judge how far he has progressed vs. how far he has to go.

It's strange how after 1 preseason game many here are ready to throw Jackson to the curb, while others after 1 preseason game see Woods as a potential player.

To be fair, Jackson hasn't shown up in TC either. I think it's just people looking at the time left to shore up the back end of the WR corps vs. their willingness to give Mr. Jackson time and roster space to "get it".

The player I'm most expecting a (apparent) big jump from. He's in an ideal situation to get playing time as the 3rd guy on the outside, and thankfully, the first pre-season game did nothing to dispell that hope.

Personnally I am not giving up on Jackson until this team does. He has to much potential for me too.

But as for Woods he has come in and worked his butt off to be one of the better STs players on this team and he was slowly getting more reps last year after Colvin went down, so that coupled with a good TC and a great first pre-season game has me penciling him in as the 3rd OLB in the rotation(not just the one pre-season game).

do not turn this into another POINTLESS CHAD JACKSON DEBATE.

TIA.

No, but here's the difference between Jackson and Woods. Jackson has shown that when healthy and with TB, he can make plays on game day. We still haven't seen that from Woods "on game day". We saw a guy that got rolled over by Ahmed Bradshaw for a critical fumble take away that would have put the Pats in prime position to really take the game over on the Giant 30 yard line. We've seen a really good performance in one preseason game, that's all we have on Woods as of right now. Yet, with that said, he did look quicker off the edge and it appears as though he's "getting it".

Chad Jackson will show his goods before this pre-season is done. The thing right now with him is it's all in his head, he's thinking and worrying way too much instead of just going out there and playing like he did in the 06 Buffalo, NY and Minnesota games. But one great catch and TD will remove all of his doubts and he'll be on his way.

I would argue just the opposite. We have seen vitrually nothing of Jackson on game day outside of a couple plays his rookie year. We have seen Pierre Woods consistantly be one of our better STers for a few years and his SB performance was pretty good outside of the missed fumble which isnt what people make it out to be. The missed fumble is not like the play where Bruschi just out muscled the Colt for a fumble recovery it was a misfortunate but not lack of abilty type thing. Woods was just unfortunate that where the ball landed he couldn't see it despite it being under him and then he never could get a hold of it when the pile jumped on he never had any control over the ball.

On the fumble lost, why didn't Belichick throw the red flag?

He had possession clearly in the open field. No pile around him. No one else touching him. As soon as he was touched by the opposition, he was down.

Put it this way: if he was in the same position at the goalline, and he began wormcrawling forward, and an opposing player touched him down an inch away from a TD, the play would have been blown dead. How is this any different?

because he never had possesion it just appeared as though he did but if you look closely the ball was lying underneath him but not in possesion. I thought the same thing for a while but it was just one of those tough breaks.
