Patriots hosting John Lynch
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 13, 2008 11:58 AM
The Patriots are hosting free-agent safety John Lynch on a visit at Gillette Stadium today.

The 36-year-old Lynch, a nine-time Pro Bowler and one of the grittier, more durable safeties to play in the NFL, was released by the Broncos on Aug. 1.

This isn’t the first time the Patriots have expressed an interest in Lynch.

When Lynch was a free agent in 2004, the Patriots visited with him before he signed with the Broncos.

The potential addition of Lynch could lessen the blow of losing Tank Williams to a season-ending knee injury.

So, who was right? Finally, one of those "so and so got cut, let's grab him" threads gets at least a hint of street cred.

It seems like this would be a good match, seeing as how we're not asking him to play a traditional safety role.

Tremendously solid player, injury free he could be a good signing for this season.

well, well, well is correct. I never even thought that the Pats would be interested because of Rodney. I'm a little stunned.

We could potentially have the oldest pair of safeties ever. Now, we need to re-sign Seau just to have all those old guys out there together.

tough, hardnosed, good insurance if rodney goes down sign him up

let's not get ahead of ourselves until he is signed. remember jamal anderson?

Me too, mea culpa (maybe).

So if this goes down, two questions:

1) Does Lynch cause pregame bedwetting for other teams like Rodney?

2) Who's losing a job? Or is it just a Tank out, Lynch in kind of thing?

Oh, and this solidifies the fact that Dom is very much in the conversation of roster needs, imo.

I wonder if he ever played CB as well,If he has then he could be very useful even in a limited role.

That would be a lot of fun to watch if it happened, IMO. :D

You know how BB loves his veterans.

This is one case where the board was really a few days ahead on this..and RIGHT on the money..Sean Pa Patriot started the thread and..maybe reality. I agree....but also I wonder if this might mean Rodney's injury is a bit worse?? If anything it's a plus...

Would we now be the New England Geriatrics? The old geezers who won 18 straight games last night and ate records like they were day-old's in a police station? Awesome.

This is quickly turning into a Lynch mob

From what I have seen, the guy has the body of a 25 year old and keeps in great shape (from a heterosexual point of view of course - not that theres anything wrong with the other views by some )

i dont get it

good news tho, better than him NOT coming in. at least they are checking him out.

I dont think the guy meant anything by it...he was just making the pun on his name.

If we sign him up I am sure plenty of us will join the Lynch Mob.

I know I will....The dude is one of the best safties of our era and if Rodney tells us anything you just never know when a guys time is up. If the chargers had that one wrong maybe the Broncos are wrong here too.

I recall Lynch being very well close to the line of scrimmage so maybe he is being brought in to do some LB in pass coverage stuff or maybe just insurance.

Sign him up!

As long as Lynch can pass a physical, I think he will be signed in the next couple of days. We need a backup safety. The team has always wanted the guy. Lynch wants to come. get it done!
