I think we will see alot of double teaming up on Moss this year and closer to the vest coverage on Welker which may open the doors for Gaffney to have an outstanding season at #3 WR which is his and a lock at #3 at this point.

I think Gaffney will surpass Donte's 697 yards receiving in 2007 as the new #3 receiver.

I wonder if maybe he may even outdo Welker at the position in terms of yardage in receiving since I can see Gaffney getting alot of 1 on 1 and not as much attention by the DBs/LBs opening the door for possibly 900 yards or more from him while Welker could possibly find it harder to get those open gaps he had so frequently last year.

While its definately a longshot,In Jabar's third season with Tom I think there is a chance that he can even surpass Welker in terms of yardage this year.

IYO - Will Jabar surpass 700 yards and will he surpass Welker in receiving Yardage?

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

Everyone was well aware of the dangers of trying to adequately cover Moss and Welker by midseason last year. Welker never really lost any ground in getting open. Tied the SB record for receptions, didn't he?

I doubt Jabar will pass him in receiving yards unless he finds a way to get deep w/ separation.

As for the quality of the yards he does get, I think they'll be close. If Jabar becomes the threat most of think he can, defenses can really only think about pass rushing with the minimum guys.

Throw in a downright scary running/rb receiving corps and it's possible Gaffney will make us say "Donte who?". Time will tell.

Gaffney will be merely adequate. He runs good routes, but he'd be a 3rd or 4th on most teams. Thank God for Welker.

We do have dire need for a burner on the opposite side of Moss, a guy who can open the field up. Gaffney will never draw double coverage whereas with a burner, a safety would have to keep one eye on him even if he wasn't very polished as a receiver.

There's a reason Belichick trotted Stallworth out there every game despite the fact he was pretty underwhelming. I've watched Gaffney closely and believe he can do the short to intermediate routes reasonably well, but his body becomes discombobulated on long throws and he doesn't rise up to the ball. In other words, he's not a long threat, which means the passing game will have a shorter field to work with.

One hopes he could become a Bobby Engram type.

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

Gaffney is the only receiver we have who work from the slot and outside. moss is too long for quick cuts that can is needed by a slot receiver and wes does not have the range to split out. gaffney is nimble enough to line up in the slot and has enough range to split.

for #3 he is very critical as you can move him in and out in your formation depending on coverage . as he can line up in both the position means you can even have him run inthe zone left by moss and wes for a open catch. He is better than stallworth when used in such a manner. stallworth could never work in the slot and as a 3rd option it limited him on the outside and never could be used in middle or seam zones.

last year teams just doubled moss and put their best CB on wes [colts had marlin jackson on him]. this meant stallworth got a cb or safety on coverage which meant that his limitation playing slot or in the middle routes made his production go down. with moss and wes you need someone to run slants and quick slot receiver routes . this is why gaffney production went up as he ran those plays real good.he is a perfect for the system we run . a reason Chad Jackson will find it hard to replace now as he is more in the line of physical and speed to MOSS and not nimble a bit like wes.

gaffney is a combo of fast and nimble a reason he is on the field more. the only guy we had was kelvin kight , maybe he should have been developed over chad i do not know.

As long as Gaffney can run in the open field and avoid tacklers out there on a regular basis in 2008 he does not need to be a long threat at WR - And from what I have seen, Gaffney is pretty good at finding those open gaps in coverage once he does get a short pass and moves from there ,I think that is one of his strong points.

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

Considering Gaffney won the #3 WR role from Stallworth outright last year, I do think he will be better. Although, it may not translate into the same stats or better.

Stallworth was inconsistent, but he was more likely to give you the big play than Gaffney. Gaffney is far more consistent and reliable though.

So you'd call Gaff a good YAC guy?

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

I think its safe to say that most fans in Patriot Nation prior to week one in 2007 thought of Wes as primarily a solid KR and a 3rd down specialist, not the dominating middle threat at slot that he was all year, last year

There were few if any who thought Donte would be outdone and outdone badly by the performance of Welker who was far superior to Stallworths production and who knows,Maybe a deja vu type deal again, although I would not bet on it but with Brady always looking for the safest place to throw the ball, who knows if Gaffney finds a way to get open more frequently this year?

My thoughts as well. Gaffney could very well have better stats then stallworth last year, but he probably won't do better then him on the Browns this year.

Agree. I also think Gaffney doesn't get the respect and recognition he deserves.

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

From what I saw last year when watching the Patriots, Gaffney seemed like a good target. In specific, I recall him making the winning TD catch in the Ravens game. Not too shabby.

Gaffney is just one among the quite a few weapons your offense has. In short, if Moss and Welker are unavailable, TB seems like he has no hesitation dialing up Gaffney.

On a side note, no, I don't think he'll earn more yards than Welker.

Yeah that's my thinking too.

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

A few things.

1) Moss has lined up in the slot plenty for the Patriots. To say he's not able or not capable of lining up there is dumb.
2) Welker has lined up outside for the Pats. In fact, his first TD came when he was lined up outside. I remember a huge argument with people saying how STUPID it was to have Moss in the slot and Welker outside. Yes, BB proved just how STUPID it was, didn't he?
3) Gaffney will see plenty of plays and could, very well be in the 60-80 reception range if the Pats throw even 90% of what they did last year. But a lot depends on how things develop.
4) Tom Brady performs best during the No-Huddle Offense. Give him Moss, Welker, Maroney, Watson, and Gaffney and opposing defenses should just step aside and let them score (said only half-kiddingly).

I said Donte who the minute he was gone. Did he really do anything?

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

no he wont because he wont be the number 3 (or #2 opposite moss). Chad Jackson will.

I think people still think of Gaffney's less than stellar years with the Texans when he is brought up. People blame him and not the person who was QB'ing, who deserves most of the blame in that relationship.

thank you.

Funniest thing i've read all day.

Re: Will Gaffney be a better #3 than Stallworth? - Could he earn more yards than Welk

Wait - so now Gaffney is playing Wes Welker's position at the #3 WR? When did this happen?

All this time I thought Gaffney was lining up opposite Moss at #2.
